Hero of Alexandria, who lived in the XNUMXnd century BC, was an outstanding physicist and mechanic of the ancient world. In his works we find descriptions of various mechanisms based on the properties of air and compressed gases, including hundreds of unusual toys and entertaining devices that awakened creative philosophical thought. Some of the ideas that he used seemed to be ahead of their time by two millennia.

It's funny, isn't it? Anyone who is looking for "chronoclasms" - the mysterious penetration of modern knowledge into the past, needs to take a closer look at Heron ... Today we will talk about one rather everyday design of the Greek scientist, which will help us refresh the water in the aquarium or humidify the air in the room - Geronov fountain. It works completely silently. Three empty bottles, pieces of glass and rubber tubes - that's all you need to make it. Of course, Heron himself used metal vessels, and we simplified the design, leaving only the principle of its operation unshakable.

Here's how it goes. Water from bottle 1 flows through a glass tube and hose into bottle 2 (it was empty before work began) and displaces air from it. It enters bottle 3 through a hose and literally squeezes water out of it through a tube lowered almost to the bottom. Passing through the hose, she beats with a fountain.

Heron fountain

Now some clarifications. Bottle 1 should be located higher than 2. The difference in water levels in them will be denoted by H. Bottle 3 can be placed anywhere. However, the height of the fountain relative to the water level and this bottle cannot be more than H. The main thing in the whole design is tightness. Corks are better cork. Each has two holes, two glass tubes are inserted into them. In principle, holes can be made with a drill, but it is better to use a special cutter that you will find in a physics or chemistry classroom.

A hose is put on each of the tubes, except for the one that comes from bottle 1.

The duration of the fountain depends on many factors. First of all, the volume of the bottle. It decreases if the level difference H increases. Naturally, it can be increased if the diameter of the hole from which the jet flows out decreases. To do this, it is better to strengthen a cork with a small hole at the end of the outlet hose. Or use the metal tip of a ballpoint pen. In this case, at H = 1 m volume of a bottle of 1 liter, the duration of the fountain will exceed 1 hour.

Improving an old classic invention is not an easy task. But this is exactly what was done with the Heron Fountain a few years ago. Imagine that bottles 1 and 3 are on the table, and 2 are on the floor. We put on the floor and on the table another bottle. Let's call them 2a and 3a, respectively. Connect bottles 2 to 2a, and then bottles 3a and 2a. The fountain from the last bottle will already be able to rise to a height of XNUMXH! And so you can continue without end, getting a jet of any height ...

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

chicken broth for hypertension 17.07.2009

Physiologists from the University of Hiroshima (Japan) found that chicken broth lowers blood pressure. Moreover, for the healing effect of the broth, it is desirable to cook not white meat, but either the whole chicken, or legs and paws.

It turned out that these parts, rich in veins and cartilage, contain peptides (proteins with a short chain of amino acids) that can inhibit the action of a hormone that constricts blood vessels and thereby increases blood pressure.

However, for those who do not like chicken broth, according to the authors of the work, wheat, soybeans, salmon and sour milk, which contain similar substances, can also help.
