Making your own weather forecast when going hiking or fishing is not so difficult. This conclusion was reached by the guys from the station of young technicians in the city of Glazov, who invented and built several designs of barometers themselves. Here is one of them.

A glass jar and a glass or vinyl chloride tube inserted into it is all that is required for manufacturing. The jar is filled with water one quarter and tightly closed with a cork, and a tube is inserted into it so that its lower end is lowered into the water.

Home weather station
Hydrostatic barometer: 1 - a can of water; 2 - a box with sawdust; 3 - tube; 4 - mount; 5 - rail with divisions

To prevent air from entering the jar, the cork must be sealed with plasticine or putty. Before using such a barometer, blow into the tube. At the same time, air will enter through the water into the jar, and the water level in the tube will rise. In the event that the jar is well sealed, the pressure in it will remain constant, and any changes in atmospheric pressure will cause changes in the water level in the tube. It remains only to calibrate the scale, and the device can be used.

Another design of the barometer can be made on the basis of the "Cartesian diver", a toy that we have repeatedly written about. True, instead of a funny person in this design, a can of stationery glue was used. The canister is filled with water so that when it is immersed in a jar, it does not sink, but protrudes slightly above the surface of the water, while maintaining a vertical position. To do this, the thread on its neck is wrapped with copper wire of the required length.

Home weather station
Barometer "Cartesian diver": 1 - a vessel with water; 2 - canister; 3 - cargo; 4 - counterweight; 5 - rack; 6 - arrow; 7 - scale; 8 - staple from a paper clip; 9 - electrical tape; 10 - holders; 11 - arrow support

A small metal bracket is attached to the bottom of the can. For this bracket, with the help of two paper clips, the can is suspended from the rack.

This is how a barometer works. When atmospheric pressure changes, the water level in the can rises or falls. At the same time, the can itself floats or sinks and pulls the arrow along with it. As you can see, everything is quite simple. To make the water evaporate less, it is better to drop a few drops of engine oil on its surface.

Well, the simplest barometer can be made from ... a balloon and a straw. How it is arranged can be seen from the figure. The most important thing here is to seal the ball well, otherwise the apparent change in pressure value will be caused by air leakage.

Home weather station
Balloon barometer: 1 - straw lever (200-250 mm), 2 - thread, 3 - lever suspension thread (distance between threads 3-5 mm)

One last piece of advice. All of these designs have the same drawback. Air remains inside the vessels, and any temperature fluctuations will lead to distortion of barometer readings, so they should be located away from heating devices.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Anxiety is transmitted through the eyes 06.06.2016

Psychologists from Uppsala University and Washington University in St. Louis have found that the transmission of anxiety can occur through the eyes. Experiments were performed with infants 6 and 9 months old - they were shown a black circle of different diameters on a white background. The circle imitated the pupil, wide or narrow, and so, as it turned out, if the child was shown a wide "pupil", then his pupils dilated in response. For comparison, a black square was used, but children's pupils did not react to it.

It is known that the pupils react to an emotional state: fear, anxiety, in general, any emotional arousal makes them dilate. Of course, a circle on a white background is still not a real pupil, but it was important for the researchers to be able to accurately control the diameter of the pupil, which is why they chose such a surrogate. And, of course, it’s hardly worth talking about anxiety here either: on the one hand, as we said, the pupils dilate to any emotional arousal, on the other hand, the researchers were interested in the response itself, that is, whether the pupils of children can copy (even if not real).

However, stress can indeed be contagious. Sarah Waters and her colleagues at New York University and the University of California at San Francisco set the following experiment: women who had children of 12 and 14 months were subjected to stress - of course, with their consent.

The stressful situation was organized as usual: they were asked to make a report in front of the audience, which then had to evaluate the speaker, and the ratings could be either negative, or neutral, or positive. Then, after some time, the mothers returned to the children - and, as it turned out, plunged them into anxiety: the children's heart rate increased, other physiological indicators of stress appeared, and they began to avoid strangers. But those babies whose mothers did not go through a stressful test perceived strangers more calmly and did not become infected with any stress.
