A seismograph with a vertical pendulum, which we suggest you make, is not a toy, not a model - it was in service with Russian seismic stations in the last century. Making it at school and even at home is quite simple.

On a solid wooden base 1 measuring 65x50 cm, a wooden stand in the shape of the letter "P" is fixed. Under the stand there is a wooden pendulum 2 with a fulcrum at the base of the model. Its height is 29 cm, length - 23 cm, width - 19 cm. An iron shoe is attached to the end of the wedge-shaped part of the pendulum, and a sharp rib is attached to its lower part. With this rib, the shoe fits into a slot-like socket on a metal plate screwed to the base of the device. There are two iron lugs on the upper ledge of the pendulum; the other two are attached to the upright columns of the rack. The ends of two helical springs made of non-hardened steel wire with a diameter of 2 mm enter the holes of all four lugs. The length of the springs in the free state is 1 cm less than the length of the gaps between the ears, for which they are hooked. An iron plate 3 with a slot and a pin is screwed to the upper face of the wooden stand. A recording lever 5 is put on the pin - a tin arrow 30 cm long with a brass plate soldered on its tail for strength. One end of the recording arm is bent down and rests lightly on the upper registration drum 6. and the other, like a fork, covers the pin 7 hammered into the upper part of the pendulum.

The spring motor rotates the lower registration drum 9. The latter, in turn, rotates the upper registration drum. A grooved pulley with a diameter of 8 mm is mounted on the motor shaft, and grooved wheels with a diameter of 9,5 cm are mounted on the drums. The motor has a forward and reverse stroke and operates for 2-3 minutes. Such motors, pulleys and wheels are available in the set of parts "Metal constructor" No. 5. A smoked paper tape is thrown over both drums and glued with its ends.

When demonstrating, shake the floor or table on which the instrument is placed and turn on the motor. From the shock, the pendulum of the device will begin to oscillate, transfer its movement to the recording lever, and the latter will register vibrations on the finished paper in the form of a zigzag line - a seismogram.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Link found between food intake and body clock 06.09.2023

A study sponsored by the Medical Research Council (MRC) has found an important relationship between a person's biological clock and meal times. This new level of understanding could lead to the development of new methods to combat diseases associated with night work and travel across time zones.

According to the study, our body's biological clock is consistent with the environment, including diet, and this interaction is of great importance. Disturbances in circadian rhythms caused by night work or flights can affect overall health. Particular attention has been paid to the fact that eating times outside of normal hours can lead to disturbances in circadian rhythms. Until now, there was no exact data on how exactly the body's biological clock reacts to food intake.

Researchers at the MRC Molecular Biology Laboratory in Cambridge, together with scientists from the University of Manchester, conducted a series of experiments that revealed that insulin plays a key role in communicating mealtime information to cells throughout the body, thus strengthening circadian rhythms. The study was conducted on cultured cells.

John O'Neill, leader of the research team, said: "The basis of this cellular clock is a complex interaction of various molecules that ensure the exact observance of the 24-hour rhythm. We have demonstrated that insulin released during meals can serve as a kind of time signal for the cells of all organism.
