“If you fill a glass ball with a narrow neck, only a straw thick, with water, and wrap it upside down, then the water, although heavier and falling rapidly in the air, will not pour into the air, but the air, capable, like the lightest body, quickly rises through water will not enter, and both substances will remain at rest against each other.

On the other hand, if the neck is dipped into a vessel with red wine, which is slightly lighter than water, then red trickles will immediately become noticeable, slowly rising among the water, and the water will flow out into the wine with the same slowness, without mixing with it, so that in the end the ball will be filled with wine, and the water will accumulate at the bottom of the vessel containing the wine.

Galileo Galilei experiment
Galileo's experiment on mixing wine and water

This is a quote from the famous work of Galileo Galilei "Conversations and mathematical proofs concerning two new branches of science related to mechanics and local motion" (1638). Although Galileo is considered one of the founders of the experimental method in science, historians of science have long believed that such an experiment is impossible: wine will mix with water, and the experiment described in the treatise should be considered mental. One of the researchers of the work of the great Italian even noticed, either jokingly or seriously, that the wine of those times apparently had other properties than modern Italian red wines, and in the XNUMXth century such an outcome of the experiment was possible.

And only relatively recently, the English historian of science James McLachlan decided to resort to the method founded by Galileo: he took two bottles of wine and water, connected them with a thin tube passed through the corks, and ... the result is visible in the pictures.

True, Galileo nevertheless somewhat idealized the description of the experiment: there is no complete immiscibility, after a while water and wine still mix a little with each other, obviously under the influence of shallow currents caused by small temperature and density differences, table vibration and other factors.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Integration of electric vehicles with the home power system 24.06.2018

Audi will offer future owners of its e-tron electric cars an intelligent battery pack recharging system.

We are talking about the integration of an electric car with a home power system. The standard compact charger delivers up to 11 kW, while the optional Connect system doubles this to 22 kW. To use the Connect system, the car can be equipped with an additional charger. In addition, this system connects to the home infrastructure via a Wi-Fi network, working in conjunction with energy management tools (HEMS).

The combination of Connect and HEMS allows you to optimize the process of recharging an electric car, taking into account the most favorable electricity rates (for example, at night) and individual needs of the owner, such as departure time and required battery level. The Connect system receives fare information via HEMS or uses data entered manually by the customer.

If the household is equipped with solar panels, the charging process can be configured to give preference to photovoltaic energy. In this case, the weather forecast for the next few days is taken into account, as well as the current flow of electricity at the point where the house is connected to the mains.

The system takes into account the energy consumption of other consumers in the process of operation. This prevents overloading the home electrical network and tripping the emergency switch.

In general, charging always takes place at the maximum power that the home electrical system and vehicle allow. The customer can view charging statistics and track the progress on the myAudi portal and on the myAudi mobile app.
