This simple device can be made by anyone. You need to take a board and, having cut out a disk from cardboard, attach it with a needle in the center to the board so that the disk can rotate freely. Another needle sticks only into the disk at its edge, and the third one only into the board. To complete the assembly of the machine, you need two more bands of easily stretchable rubber (you can take apothecary rubber bands), a pencil and a sheet of paper.

After the needle at the edge of the disk is connected to the stationary needle and pencil with rubber bands, we place the point of the pencil at some point on the sheet of paper and thereby stretch the rubber bands. The disc is installed in a certain position. Now, as the pencil moves across the sheet of paper, the disk will rotate, and it turns out that for certain positions of the pencil point, a small change in its position can cause a "catastrophe", that is, an abrupt rotation of the disk. If we mark the places of all such catastrophes on a piece of paper, we get a "catastrophe curve".

It also turns out that the resulting "catastrophe curve" itself has four cusp points. Interestingly, when crossing the catastrophe curve, a jump may or may not occur, depending on which path the pencil took around the cusps.

By experimenting with the catastrophe machine and analyzing its behavior (movement, as physicists and mathematicians say, representing points along the equilibrium surface), one can be convinced in detail how the theory of singularities predicts the geometry of catastrophes - jumps from one equilibrium state to another.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

DC/DC converters NSD-10 and NSD-15 for board mounting 23.07.2007

Mean Well announced the start of production of new modular PCB-mounted DC/DC converters NSD-10 and NSD-15 with 10W and 15W respectively. The new products are a lower power expansion of the popular DC/DC converter line and are designed for the growing market for distributed power applications.

The products of the new series are identical in size and pinout to their predecessors ASD-10H and ASD-15H, but they are characterized by increased performance, economy, and a number of additional functions. The input voltages of the new converters are 12V and 48V, the range of output voltages selectable by the user includes 3,3V; 5 V; 9V (except NSD-15); 12V; 15 V; +5V; +12 V; +15 V. Isolation between input and output is 1500 VDC.

Other features of the new products include remote on/off, short circuit, over voltage and overload protection. The 15W models also have remote output voltage adjustment for added design flexibility.
