The common mongrel

Synonyms black thistle, black sedge.

A perennial herbaceous plant with a fleshy, taproot, slightly branched root, of the Asteraceae family (Compositae).

Stems solitary or few, 20-60 cm high, simple or slightly branched at the top, rounded, cobwebby tomentose. The leaves are alternate, deeply pinnate, 6 to 20 cm long, dark green above, white-felt below.

The flowers are tubular, bluish, collected in large spherical inflorescences with a diameter of 3,5-4,5 cm. The fruit is a cylindrical achene 6 mm long with a cup-shaped tuft.

Flowering in May-August, fruiting in June-August.

The fruits are harvested in autumn.

Range and habitats. The natural range covers the south of Europe (from Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia in the north to Spain, Italy and the Balkans in the south) and part of Eastern Europe, the Asian part of Turkey. It is found in Turkmenistan and the Chinese Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Distributed in the south of the European part of Russia (Northern Caucasus) and in Western Siberia. In the central part of Russia - in the black earth zone, to the north - rare adventive on limestone outcrops.

Grows in steppes and dry meadows. Often associated with chalk and limestone outcrops.

As an ornamental and honey plant, it is cultivated almost everywhere in the world.

The common mongrel

Chemical composition. The fruits contain alkaloids alpha and beta echinopsin (up to 1,5-2,0% in seeds) and echinopsine; fatty oil (up to 28%).

Application in medicine. Medicines from the fruits of the common muzzle, containing echinopsin, are used for diseases of the central nervous system - paresis, plexitis, radiculitis and hypotension. Echinopsine nitrate was used as a tonic (analogous to strychnine nitrate).

Other uses. Honey plant. The honey productivity of continuous thickets is 190-340 kg per hectare. Honey has a light amber color, delicate aroma and pleasant taste. The nectar has a strong and persistent sharpish specific aroma, so the bees quickly find even a small area of flowering plants and visit it until the first autumn cold snap.

The plant is bred in gardens as an ornamental.

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Mordovnik ordinary, or Echinops ritro, is a perennial plant that grows in the Mediterranean regions. It has beautiful prickly flowers and can be used in landscaping.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing common mordovnik:

Cultivation:

  • The choice of soil and illumination: Mordovnik ordinary prefers a sunny place. It can grow in a variety of soil types, but prefers fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Landing: Choose a landing site that is in a sunny position. Dig a hole about 30 cm deep and 30-40 cm wide. Before planting, add organic fertilizer and mix it into the soil.
  • Depth and distance between plants: Plant the plants at a depth of about 5-10 cm and at a distance of about 60-80 cm from each other.
  • Plant care: Common Mordovnik needs regular watering and fertilizer. It also needs pruning to keep it decorative.

Workpiece:

  • Mordovnik ordinary can be used as a dried flower.
  • Harvest the flowers during the flowering period, then air dry and store in a dry place.

Storage:

  • Store dried flowers of mordovnik in a glass or plastic container in a cool and dry place.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

XNUMXD materials change shape and store energy 08.09.2021

The group of Professor Peter Baum from the University of Konstanz studied two-dimensional materials that, when exposed to a laser, change their shape and their unique properties.

Using laser pulses, the MXene can be repeatedly switched between flat and wavy, opening up a wide range of possible applications.

MXenes are two-dimensional sheets of transition metal carbides or nitrides: they are arranged in single layers a few atoms thick. Such a fine structure can only be obtained by exfoliating one material into many small layers.

Unlike most other single layer materials, MXene can be easily produced in large quantities thanks to the discovery of a scalable and irreversible chemical exfoliation method.

The chemical and physical properties of MXene are configurable depending on the choice of transition metal. Therefore, the material can be used in sensing, energy storage, light collection, and even to achieve an antibacterial effect.

In the new study, the authors improved the properties of MXene using fast light pulses that they directed at the material. As a result, they found that laser energy is transferred to the atomic lattice in a record time - only 230 femtoseconds. The researchers also managed to control the orientation of nanowaves using laser polarization: this means that the material has optical memory at the nanolevel.

Moreover, if the laser is again directed at the MXene, the material will again turn into a plane.
