Family: Araliaceae (Araliaceae)

Origin: Zamaniha high comes from northeast Asia, including Russia (Far East), Japan and Korea.

Area: Coniferous and deciduous forests, thickets of bushes and bamboo thickets, located at altitudes from 100 to 2200 m above sea level.

Chemical composition: The roots of the plant contain polysaccharides, volatile oils, phenolic compounds, saponins and tripterpenoids. They are also rich in vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium.

Zamaniha high (Echinopanax high)

Shrub about 1 m high with a long creeping rhizome, Araliaceae family (Araliaceae).

Stem straight, unbranched, covered with spines 3-10 mm long; leaves on long petioles, studded with thorns, large, rounded, with a heart-shaped base, 15-35 cm in diameter, five-seven-lobed, almost bare above, along the veins with thorns below.

The flowers are inconspicuous, small, greenish in color, in simple umbrellas, collected in an oblong complex brush. Fruits are 7-12 mm long, spherical, juicy, yellow-red in color, with two stones flattened laterally.

Flowering in June-July, fruiting in August-September.

Range and habitats. Zamaniha is common in the upper mountain forests of the Ussuri region.

It grows in mixed forests, edges, burnt areas, clearings.

Renewed by seeds and root offspring, propagated by seeds and jigging offspring. In culture, it requires shading, it is difficult to take root and develop poorly.

Chemical composition. The leaves, stems and rhizomes of zamanihi contain essential oil, which includes alcohols, aldehydes (up to 10%), phenols (3%), free acids (4%), hydrocarbons (4%). The greatest amount of essential oil is found in the roots and rhizomes of plants (1,8%). Glycosides were found in the leaves. All parts of the plant contain saponins and traces of alkaloids.

Application in medicine. As a medicinal raw material, a rhizome with high lure roots (lat. Rhizoma cum radicibus Echinopanacis) is used, which is harvested in the fall after the growing season, thoroughly cleaned from the ground, cut into pieces up to 35 cm and dried. Shelf life of raw materials is 3 years.

Tincture of lure high, similar in action to tincture of ginseng, is used as a stimulant in various forms of asthenia, depression, hypotension.

The main biologically active substances are saponins echinoxosides, lignans, essential oil, coumarins, flavonoids.

Other uses. It is decorative and can be recommended for planting in parks in areas with constant high air humidity during the growing season and good snow cover.

Cosmetology:

  • Face tonic: mix 1 tablespoon of freshly picked leaves of lure high with 200 ml of boiling water and leave for 30 minutes. Then strain and use as a facial toner after cleansing.
  • Mask for the face: Mix 2 tbsp dried zamaniha root powder with 1 tbsp honey and some water to make a thick paste. Apply to face and leave on for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with warm water.
  • Shampoo: infuse 1 tablespoon of crushed zamanihi roots in 200 ml of boiling water for 30 minutes, then strain. Add the resulting extract to 250 ml of natural shampoo and shake well before use.
  • Hair conditioner: Mix 1 tablespoon dried zamaniha root powder with 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (such as coconut or olive oil) and a little water to make a thick paste. Apply to hair after shampooing and leave for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with warm water.

Zamaniha high (Echinopanax high) is an ornamental shrub plant, which is also known as Oplopanax elatus. The plant grows in humid forests in Siberia, the Far East and Japan.

Biologists from Nanjing University in China have created artificial sperm.

Usually artificial spermatozoa are grown from stem cells, but Chinese scientists have invented a more promising way. In the laboratory, they managed to create spermatids - male germ cells of one of the final stages of formation. They are absolutely functional, but lack a swimming tail and can only fertilize an egg in vitro. With the help of this biomaterial, scientists obtained healthy offspring from several dozen female mice.

The production of artificial sperm required meticulous work from biologists. They took embryonic male mouse cells and exposed them to cytokines ("information" molecules) to develop into sex cells. The cells were then placed in a nutrient medium similar to male testicles and exposed to testosterone.

The resulting material fully complied with the "gold standard" for artificial sperm, defined by a group of reproductive scientists in 2014. Its main criteria are the absence of cellular mutations at each stage of formation, the correct set of chromosomes and the composition of DNA.

As always, the question of the ethics of such experiments remains open. Artificial sperm does not go through all the natural stages of cellular formation and it is not known how children conceived in this way will develop. In addition, spermatids are selected in the testicles - the body determines which of them are best suited for reproduction. This is not possible under laboratory conditions. Be that as it may, experiments to create artificial sperm are being carried out in many countries of the world and give hope to thousands of infertile men.
