Snowberry white (snowberry racemosus)

The Latin name of the genus Symphoricarpos comes from the Greek words symphorein, which means to carry together, and karpos, fruit, which is due to the fact that the fruits of the snowberry are densely packed in clusters. The Russian name of the genus is associated with the white color of the fruits of a large number of species of snowberries, in English they are also called snowberry, i.e. literally a snow berry.

All snowberries are deciduous shrubs 0,2-3 m high with thin shoots.

Kidneys - with two pairs of outer scales. The leaves are opposite, simple, short-petiolate, entire, sometimes notched-toothed on coppice shoots, without stipules, ovate or oval in shape, up to 2-5 cm long. From the upper side, the leaves are green, bare, from the lower side - gray and slightly pubescent.

The flowers are regular, small (0,6 cm in diameter), with a bell-shaped 4-5-lobed pink corolla, collected in dense racemose inflorescences in the axils of the leaves. Blooms from May to September.

The fruit is a spherical or ellipsoidal juicy drupe about 1 cm in diameter, with 1-3 (usually 2) oval more or less compressed stones. Depending on the species (and variety), the color of the fruit varies from white (most often), to red or black. The fruits are inedible, according to some reports - poisonous. They ripen in September and do not fall for a long time (sometimes all winter).

In the wild, all snowberries are common in North America, one species (Chinese snowberry) grows in China.

Snowberries (especially often white snowberries) are used in decorative garden elements for green areas. From private gardens, plants can escape into nature and fall wild in the vicinity of settlements.

The fruits of the snowberry are inedible or even poisonous to humans - they cause vomiting, dizziness, weakness

Snowberries are ornamental plants and good honey plants.

In ornamental gardening, as a rule, white or racemose snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus) is used. It is undemanding to soil and moisture, shade-tolerant and gas-resistant. Blooms throughout the summer. The shrub is especially decorative in autumn due to white spherical fruits with a diameter of about 1 cm.

Snowberries are used as ornamental plants, mainly in hedges, but also look good in single plantings. They bloom for a long time and profusely, on plants you can often see both flowers and fruits at the same time.

Winter hardiness is high, unpretentious, well tolerated by a haircut.

The snowberry is propagated by layering, cuttings, dividing the bush and seeds.

White snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus) is a shrub with decorative white berries that can be grown in the garden or in the country.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing white snowberry:

Cultivation:

  • The white snowberry prefers sunny or semi-shady areas with fertile and well-drained soil.
  • Plants can be planted in spring or autumn.
  • Planting depth should be the same as in the pot in which the plant was purchased.
  • It is recommended to plant plants at a distance of about 1-1,5 m from each other.
  • The white snowberry needs regular watering and top dressing with fertilizers to stimulate growth and abundant flowering.
  • It is recommended to prune the bushes in the spring to remove old and damaged branches and form the correct shape of the bush.
  • White snowberry does not require special care, and can grow in the wild on its own.

Workpiece:

  • Berries of the white snowberry can be used to make jams, marmalades or desserts.
  • The berries should be harvested when ripe, when they reach their maximum ripeness, washed, stem removed, and used in cooking.

Storage:

  • Fresh white snowberry berries are best refrigerated in a bag or container to preserve freshness and flavor.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

energy from the ear 06.03.2021

Experts have discovered a new power source, which is convenient because it is always near you and never runs out of power. Moreover, you yourself are such a source of nutrition, or rather, your inner ear.

Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology were able to learn how to turn the cochlea of the inner ear of mammals into a source, albeit a small one, but still energy. The cochlea is a tube coiled and filled with liquid.

It is with its help that all mammals perceive sounds, and a small amount of energy is produced in it. For example, a guinea pig snail is capable of generating an electric current of up to 28 milliamps, and a voltage of 30 to 55 volts. In order to collect information about the electricity generated by the guinea pig's snail, experts designed a special chip measuring 9 by 11 millimeters.

This small device ran on the energy generated by the inner ear for 5 hours, transmitting all the necessary data to scientists at a frequency of 2,4 gigahertz. This technology could help scientists invent microscopic hearing aids or stapes prostheses that will be powered directly from the energy of the inner ear.

In the future, this can make a real breakthrough in the treatment of hearing diseases, and defeat deafness, from which more and more people suffer every year. True, so far, experts have not figured out how to implant electrodes into the cochlea safely for hearing. And until this problem can be dealt with, all work in this direction will not move beyond experiments on laboratory animals.
