Dereza ordinary (barbarian dereza, bearded dereza, ordinary lycium, goji)

Goji is a Russian transliteration of the English goji, which is an approximate transcription of the pronunciation of the name of this plant in some Chinese dialects and denotes the berries of Dereza ordinary and Dereza Chinese.

Shrub up to 3,5 m tall, branches covered with thin spines, leaves opposite, simple entire, elliptical. The flowers are purple (violet-pink), bell-shaped.

The fruit is a small coral-red berry. By their appearance, the fruits resemble barberries, and they taste like a mixture of cranberries and raspberries. Dereza bears fruit from May to October (depending on the region). On plantations in China, 13 crops are collected during this time, of which the most valuable fruits are harvested in August.

Original homeland - China Gansu Province, Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Sichuan, Xinjiang. Culturally grown in mass quantities in the north of the central part of China in the Ningxia region, in Tibet and the Himalayas. In addition, dereza is cultivated throughout Eurasia. It often runs wild and settles in the vicinity of settlements throughout the middle lane and in the south. In a wild state, it is found in the Kuban, in the Primorsky Territory, in the Caucasus and in Central Asia.

This plant is found along rural roads, on forest edges.

Berries of common wolfberry are rich in vitamins (riboflavin, thiamine, ascorbic acid), minerals (zinc, selenium, magnesium, iron, chromium, calcium, phosphorus), carotenoids (beta-carotene, zeaxanthin). They contain steroidal saponins and flavonoids, many amino acids, the alkaloid hyoscyamine.

The fruits of common wolfberry are used mainly in dried form for medicinal purposes, and they are also used to make jam.

For many centuries, dereza berries have been used in traditional Asian medicine as a general tonic. In Japan and China, an alcoholic drink is prepared from them.

Dereza ordinary (barbarian dereza, bearded dereza, ordinary lycium, goji)

For medicinal purposes, ripe berries and leaves of the plant are used. Berries have a tonic and restorative effect. Their use improves the functioning of the hematopoietic system, helps to get rid of constant dizziness and headaches, and also protects the retina from hyperglycemia, and has a beneficial effect on vision. In traditional Chinese medicine, dry fruits (Latin Fructus Lycii) are used to treat wet dreams, lower body pain, dizziness, and amblyopia.

In addition, common wolfberry berries help strengthen the lungs, normalize kidney activity, prevent fatty degeneration of the liver, and also normalize sugar levels, reduce the amount of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood, and prevent premature aging.

The use of the fruits of the plant contributes to the production in the body of an important antioxidant enzyme - superoxide dismutase. Dereza vulgaris exhibits a weak hypotensive effect, but is able to enhance the effect of drugs that reduce blood pressure and the effectiveness of antidiabetic agents. It helps with inflammatory processes and rheumatism, inhibits the growth of pathogenic Escherichia coli, inhibits the development of candidiasis. Dereza berries are called love berries for their ability to increase sexual desire and potency.

Contrary to the claims of marketers, dried berries contain virtually no vitamin C. To get the amount of antioxidants found in a regular red apple, you need to drink 13 servings of goji juice.

  • Plants need regular watering during periods of drought. But do not flood the plants, as they do not like waterlogging.
  • The distance between plants should be about 1-1,5 meters.
  • Planting depth for seeds is about 1 cm, and for cuttings - about 5 cm.
  • Do not plant dereza in wetlands, as it does not tolerate waterlogging.
  • Remove weeds regularly and feed plants with complex fertilizers.
  • Cut off dry and damaged branches to promote the growth of new ones.
  • During the fruiting period, plants need more water and fertilizer.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Wind turbine without blades 10.02.2007

The new system of wind power generators, proposed by the English inventor Victor Jovanovich, actually has blades, but they are hidden in a streamlined casing.

The wind rotates a wheel with blades inside the casing, resembling the main part of a turboprop aircraft engine. According to the inventor, such a system has doubled efficiency and operates at wind speeds from 11 to 200 kilometers per hour.
