Ginger, Camelina sativa. Legends, the birthplace of the plant, the history of distribution

Ryzhik

People who first came to the Urals or Siberia notice that vegetable oil there does not look like sunflower oil. When they ask what kind of oil it is, the locals answer: "Redfish".

Well, they get it from mushrooms of mushrooms? No, absolutely from other saffron milk caps.

Many fields in the Urals and Siberia are sown with low plants. The upper part of the stem is strongly branched, and the narrow leaves are covered with a bluish wax coating. This is the redheads. In their appearance, they resemble flax-curly. The resemblance is not only superficial.

Ginger, like flax, is a good oil plant. It is no coincidence that in England it is called false flax, in Germany - yellow flax. And they called it a saffron milk cap: for the reddish color of small seeds ripening in short pods. Oil is squeezed out of these seeds - it is used both for food and for the manufacture of drying oil.

Ryzhik

Ginger is an ancient oil plant. Once it was bred throughout Europe, but over time it was sown less and less, and then completely forgotten. This happened because the camelina suddenly had a dangerous rival - a sunflower, which came to us from distant Mexico.

The yield of this "foreigner" turned out to be much higher than that of camelina, and more vegetable oil was also obtained from its seeds. That camelina and could not resist the onslaught of the "Mexican".

And yet, this plant was not forgotten everywhere - it was still grown to the east of the Ural Mountains. And it is no coincidence: the summer there is short, there is little sun for sunflower and curly flax. And the camelina is distinguished by its amazing precocity, the Siberian summer is enough for it. That's where he settled down.

The ginger served well in the Great Patriotic War.

Many areas where sunflower was grown were occupied by the enemy. There was not enough oil in the country. It was then that they remembered this plant and began to hastily expand the camelina fields in Siberia and the Urals.

A lot of camelina is grown there to this day.

Ryzhik

Ryzhik is an annual weed in flax crops, rye is found in fallow fields, wastelands, gardens, orchards. The fruits are pods 6-12 mm long with convex valves and a short spout. 6 species of wild camelina grow in Ukraine. More often than others, small-fruited, wild, hairy, naked and linen camelina are found.

The scientific name of camelina comes from the Greek words "hamai" - "low" and "linion" - "flax", which translates as "low flax". Ryzhik often grows in flax crops, drowns them out, so flax grew low and underdeveloped.

More recently, camelina was widely cultivated abroad as an oil-bearing plant. On the territory of Siberia and Altai, camelina is also bred at the present time, since sunflower does not withstand local climatic conditions. Ryzhik is also unpretentious to soils.

Camelina seed oil is extracted by hot pressing. Fresh, unrefined camelina oil has an unpleasant odor and bitter taste, which disappear after some exposure to air. Oils in camelina seeds contain 32,6-42,6%. Purified camelina oil is also called sesar oil and is quite widely used in perfumery and mechanical engineering, paint and varnish production.

Ginger, Camelina sativa. Tips for growing, harvesting and storing

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Camelina (Camelina sativa) is an annual plant of the cruciferous family, which is grown as a fodder, oilseed and medicinal plant.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing camelina:

Cultivation:

  • Ryzhik prefers sunny places and fertile, well-drained soils.
  • Plants can tolerate light shade, but yields may be lower.
  • It is recommended to plant camelina in spring or autumn.
  • The distance between plants should be approximately 10-15 cm.
  • Water plants sparingly, avoiding waterlogged soil to avoid root rot.
  • Camelina can be susceptible to disease, so keep your plants healthy and remove diseased or wilted parts.

Workpiece:

  • Camelina seeds are harvested in late summer - early autumn, when they begin to burst on the plant.
  • Choose mature seeds that are in the best condition.
  • Bags or towels can be used to collect camelina seeds to avoid wastage.
  • Seeds can also be collected by hand, protecting them from falling out.
  • Dry seeds can be stored in paper or cloth bags in a cool, dry place.

Storage:

  • Dry camelina seeds can be stored in sealed containers in a cool, dry place for up to 2 years.
  • Camelina oil should be stored in a dark, cool place in a hermetically sealed container.
  • The oil must be used within 6 months of opening.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

DDR4 chip based on third-generation 10nm class technology 29.03.2019

Samsung said it was the first in the industry to develop 4Gb Double Data Rate 4 (DDR8) memory chips based on third-generation 10nm class manufacturing technology. At the same time, it is noted that only 16 months have passed since the start of mass production of the same chips, but based on the production technology of the 10-nanometer class of the second generation. During this time, the development of the 8Gb DDR4 chip based on 10nm-class technology without the use of EUV photolithography has pushed the limits of DRAM scaling.

Thanks to the introduction of new technology, production efficiency has been increased by 20% compared to the previous generation technology. After testing the new 8 GB memory modules with processor manufacturers, Samsung will actively collaborate with global customers to provide a wide range of affordable solutions.

Mass production of 4Gb DDR8 memory chips based on third-generation 10nm class manufacturing technology will begin in the second half of this year, and high-performance computers and servers with such chips will hit the market as early as 2020.
