Origin: Yellow goose onion (Gagea lutea) is found in Europe and Asia, as well as in northwestern Africa.

Area: Yellow goose onion grows in meadows, fields, forest edges, in the mountains, up to an altitude of 3000 meters above sea level.

Chemical composition: The plant contains alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids and essential oil.

Economic value: In folk medicine, the plant is used as a hemostatic, choleretic, diuretic and anti-inflammatory agent. Also goose onion yellow is used as an ornamental plant. However, in large quantities, the plant can cause poisoning, manifested in the form of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Legends, myths, symbolism: In Japan, yellow goose onions are known as "kanafugi" and are used in traditional medicine as well as in Japanese cooking. It is associated with good health and longevity. In Japanese mythology, the yellow goosebow is also associated with the goddess of the sea, Ryuju, who is believed to have used it to preserve her beauty and youth. Lily family - Liliaceae.

Perennial.

Bulb one, oblong-ovate, with brownish-gray shells. The stem is glabrous, 15-25 cm high. The basal leaf is solitary, exceeds the inflorescence, broadly linear, flat, shortly pointed, with a cap-shaped apex; upper - linear or lanceolate.

Inflorescence umbellate. Flowers 2-16 on uneven erect pedicels; tepals oblong or linear-oblong, yellow; external greenish-yellow, obtuse. The fruit is a box.

Blooms in April. The fruits ripen in May - June.

It grows in shady deciduous forests, among shrubs.

Found throughout Europe and Turkey.

Industrial harvesting is possible in the Polissya and forest-steppe regions.

All parts of the plant contain garlic essential oils, which include sulfur.

Small bulbs are edible, leaves are suitable for making spicy salads.

In folk medicine, a decoction of the bulbs was used orally for edema, jaundice, bronchial asthma; crushed onions - as a wound healing.

Getting electricity from blood sugar 06.04.2023

A team of researchers from the ETH Zurich has created a device that converts excess glucose in human blood into electricity. It can be used to power pacemakers and more.

A group of researchers led by Martin Fussenegger from the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering at the ETH Zurich in Basel has turned a seemingly futuristic idea into reality. They developed an implanted fuel cell that uses excess blood sugar (glucose) from tissues to generate electrical energy. The researchers combined the fuel cell with artificial beta foci developed by their group several years ago. They produce insulin at the touch of a button and effectively lower blood glucose levels by working like their natural counterpart in the pancreas.

Many people, especially in the industrialized Western countries, consume more carbohydrates than they need in their daily lives,” Fussenegger explains. This leads to obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The scientists decided to use this excessive metabolic energy to produce electricity for food biomedical devices.

The fuel cell is based on a copper-based nanoparticle anode that Fussenegger's team created specifically for this device. It consists of metal nanoparticles and breaks down glucose into gluconic acid and a proton to generate electricity that drives an electrical circuit.

Wrapped in non-woven material and coated with alginate, the fuel cell resembles a small tea bag that can be implanted under the skin. The alginate absorbs body fluid and allows glucose to pass from the tissue to the fuel cell inside.

The electrical energy supplied by the element is sufficient not only for the operation of the device itself, but also for the implanted system to be able to interact with devices inside and outside the body. For example, it can be connected to a smartphone through a special application that provides communication with a doctor.
