Verbena family - Verbenaceae.

Shrub or small tree 150-200 cm high. Leaves are opposite, palmately compound, finely white-tomentose below. The flowers are lilac in dense semi-whirlwind terminal corymbs, forming a paniculate spike-shaped inflorescence.

Flowers bisexual, calyx tubular; corolla cleft-petaled, slightly funnel-shaped, with oblique 4-5-parted limb, almost two-lipped; stamens 4-5, style one.

The fruit is a drupe.

It grows along the banks of large and small rivers, ditches. Often found in culture.

Range - North Africa (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia), all of Southern Europe (from Spain to the southern coast of Crimea), Transcaucasia (Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan), and the temperate zone and subtropics of Asia: Western Asia (Turkey, Cyprus, Israel) , Central Asia (Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan).

The leaves contain up to 0,12% ascorbic acid, glycoside agnuzide; in leaves up to 0,5% and seeds up to 0,8% essential oil. The essential oil from the leaves is a light yellow liquid with a greenish tint and a peculiar smell.

The composition of the oil includes: alpha- and beta-pinenes (40%), cineol (up to 25%), sabinene, palmitic acid, quinone, limonene (1%), n-cymene, linimol, camphor, bornyl acetate.

Aromatic fruits and spicy seeds are used in cooking as a good substitute for allspice.

They help to improve digestion, have a tonic effect due to the stimulation of the functions of the endocrine glands.

Specialists have developed compositions for marinades using young shoots and leaves of sacred vitex (from the beginning of budding to full bloom) with the addition of other aromatic plants in various compositions that are used in the canning industry.

When fish is cooked, vitex fruits give the surface of fish meat a brown tint and give it a slightly spicy, somewhat tart taste with a bitter tint.

Essential oil from mature fruits has an antibacterial effect on gram-negative bacteria and yeast-like fungi.

The plant is used in homeopathy.

In the past, sacred vitex was used in folk medicine for chronic diseases of the liver and spleen, for malaria and women's diseases; tincture of ripe fruits - as a tonic, with spermatorrhea and impotence.

Cannabis vitex (Viteks hemp - Vitex cannabifolia Sieb) is used similarly to sacred vitex.

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Vitex sacred refers to tropical and subtropical plants, therefore, in temperate climates, it is grown as a home flower.

Tips for Growing, Harvesting and Storing Sayan Vitex:

Cultivation:

  • The plant prefers bright but diluted sunlight. It is best to place it on the south window sill.
  • Requires regular watering and moderate soil moisture. However, avoid stagnant water so as not to oversaturate the roots.
  • During the growing season, fertilize the plant once every two weeks.
  • In winter, it is better to move the plant to a cool room with a temperature of about 10-15 ° C.
  • Vitex is propagated by seeds or cuttings in spring or autumn.

Workpiece:

  • For medicinal purposes, flowers and fruits of vitex are used, collected during flowering in May - June.
  • Flowers and fruits can be used both fresh and dried. For drying, it is necessary to spread the material in a thin layer on paper sheets and dry in a warm and dry place.

Storage:

  • Store dried flowers and fruits in well-closed containers in a cool, dry and dark place. The shelf life is from one to two years.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

The two-photon method made it possible to increase the accuracy of nanoscale measurements by a hundred times 14.05.2018

The accuracy of measuring the size of nanostructures has been increased by at least a hundred times, thanks to the work of researchers from the University of Warwick, the QuantIC center and the University of Glasgow. A new method using pairs of photons, the fundamental particles of light, makes it possible to measure the thickness of objects 100 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair, with an accuracy 100 times greater than any other method.

The new measurement method uses a source that emits pairs of photons that are almost identical in all respects. These photons are separated using a component called a light splitter, about 30 thousand pairs of photons are used to carry out one measurement cycle, and about 500 billion photons are used to carry out the entire measurement as a whole.

One of the photons, photon A, remains inside the light splitter, and the second photon, photon B, passes through the object, causing its speed to slow down somewhat. After that, photon B again returns to the light splitter and leaves it together with photon A. Measuring the delay between the exit of photons A and B from the splitter gives the value of the thickness of the object through which photon B passed. And the accuracy of such measurements is at least 100 times higher than the accuracy similar measurements made with only one photon.

With this method it is possible to measure objects made of transparent material. But even this is quite enough to study the structure and properties of cell membranes, DNA molecules. In addition, the new measurement method can be used for quality control in the production of graphene and other conventionally two-dimensional materials.

"The most interesting thing about this achievement is that the measurements are not carried out with the help of some unstable quantum technologies, but with the help of sensors based on time-tested conventional physical principles," says Dr George Knee, who developed the theoretical basis of the experiment. , - "A higher measurement accuracy was obtained by us due to the special adjustment of the interferometer and its constant recalibration, which made it possible to eliminate the slow time and temperature drift."
