James Watt (1736-1819)
James Watt

The unit of power in all fields of physics and technology is named after him.

The outstanding engineer and inventor James Watt was born on January 19, 1736 in Greenock (Scotland) in the family of a merchant. Due to poor health, Watt formally studied little, but learned a lot on his own. As a teenager, he was fond of astronomy, chemical experiments, learned to do everything with his own hands, even earned the title of "jack of all trades." In 1755 Watt left for London, where he mastered the profession of a master of mathematical and astronomical instruments. In this profession, he got a job at the University of Glasgow, at the same time opened his own mechanics repair shop. In 1763, he was approached with a request to repair a steam engine.

Here we need to make a small digression. Once we were taught at school that the Russian serf mechanic Ivan Polzunov invented the steam engine, and not James Watt at all. In fact, the inventor of the steam engine is the English engineer Harry Newcomen, who developed the steam engine in 1712 (half a century before Watt). Newcomen's machine was used to pump water from numerous mines in the UK. It was the first large-scale product in the history of technology (several thousand pieces were produced).

It was such a machine that fell into the hands of James Watt. Working with this machine, Watt became convinced of its inefficiency. He set about trying to improve the parameters of the steam engine. It is difficult to enumerate all the improvements that Watt made to the steam engine (centrifugal regulator, separate steam condenser, seals, etc.). Thanks to these improvements, the efficiency has risen, and most importantly, the steam engine has become easily manageable.

Thanks to this, the steam engine began to be used in factories and factories as a drive, which led to a sharp increase in labor productivity. It was from this moment that the British counted the beginning of the great industrial revolution, which brought England to a leading position in the world. Moreover, the steam engine came to transport (Fulton's steamer, 1807, Stephenson's steam locomotive, 1815). Thanks to the advantage in means of transportation, England became the largest power in the world. The wealthy industrialist Boulton became interested in Watt's inventions. The Boulton and Watt company arose, which monopolized the production of steam engines. So James Watt became a wealthy man. He lived a long life and died on August 19, 1819.

As a unit of power, Watt at one time proposed such a unit as "horsepower". This unit has survived to this day. But in England, where Watt is revered as a pioneer of the industrial revolution, they decided otherwise. In 1882, the British Association of Engineers decided to assign his name to the unit of power, now the name of James Watt can be read on any electric light bulb. This was the first time in the history of technology that a unit of measurement was given its own name. The tradition of assigning proper names to units of measurement began with him.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

JUICE space probe 14.04.2023

The European Space Agency launched an Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou, French Guiana. Thus, the mission to explore the satellites of Jupiter was launched.

The rocket launched the 6-ton Jupiter Ice Moons Explorer (JUICE) spacecraft into space. This is ESA's largest deep space mission. The spacecraft was built by Airbus Defense & Space at a cost of 1,5 billion euros.

The idea for the JUICE mission came about after NASA's Galileo and Cassini probes discovered that some moons of Jupiter and Saturn were covered in ice. They likely also contain large subsurface oceans in which microbial life can exist.

"The next logical step was to return to Jupiter with improved equipment to study these oceans in detail," said Nicolas Altobelli, a planetary scientist at the European Space Agency who helped develop the JUICE mission. "And with that in mind, we wanted to see if they were possible habitats for life."

The JUICE spacecraft is massive enough that it will need several planetary flybys to store energy to reach the Jupiter system. After its launch, JUICE will fly past Earth three times, as well as Venus, before entering orbit around Jupiter. This will only happen in 2031. Then, from 2031 to 2034, it will make nearly three dozen flybys of Ganymede, Europa and Callisto, examining their icy surfaces in detail.

JUICE will approach some space objects at a distance of 200 km, which will allow them to be seen better. The ship is equipped with a high-resolution optical camera, a spectrometer, a magnetometer and other research instruments. Among the scientific goals of the mission is also the understanding of the formation of Jupiter's moons, their development and changes that led to differences from each other.

At the end of 2034, after making many orbits around Jupiter, JUICE should enter orbit around Ganymede, where it will remain for another year. It will be a complex maneuver to enter the orbit of a satellite of another planet. As Nicolas Altobelli points out, Ganymede is a very interesting moon with its own magnetic field and probably an internal ocean. The ESA hopes to "carry out the most detailed analysis of the interior of the moon."
