Care of the injured and sick. mustard plasters

The mustard cause local - at the site of their application - vasodilation of the skin. Mustard plasters are used for hypertension (put on the back of the head and collar area), for pain in the heart, inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, for pneumonia and bronchitis.

A factory-made mustard plaster is a sheet of thick paper 12 cm long and 8 cm wide, which is covered with a layer of dry mustard. Mustard plasters can be prepared by yourself: dry mustard must be diluted in warm water to a mushy state and greased with slurry linen fabric, covering it with a layer of clean, similar fabric. Before use, mustard plasters are moistened in warm water and tightly applied to the body with the side covered with a layer of mustard for 10-15 minutes.

For children, as well as adults with delicate skin, in order to avoid burns, mustard plasters are applied through a layer of thin paper, gauze - or with the reverse side. It is impossible to use boiling water for mustard plasters, because it destroys the mustard enzyme, as a result of which the release of essential mustard oil does not occur.

2-3 minutes after the application of mustard plasters, the patient feels warmth and burning. If the burning sensation is very strong or pain appears, the mustard must be removed. Redness appears on the skin under mustard plasters. After removing mustard plasters, the skin is gently wiped with a damp gauze cloth, and then dry to remove mustard residue. The patient is recommended to lie down in bed covered for 0,5-1 hour.

Mustard plasters are stored in a dry place. With prolonged storage, they lose their activity and become unusable. Shelf life - 8 months.
