Symptoms of a spinal injury

First aid before the doctor arrives

If the child is unconscious, monitor his breathing and pulse. To do this, without moving or lifting the child's neck and head, push the lower jaw forward to open the airway. Make sure the airway is not blocked by the tongue. Look and listen to see if the child is breathing.

If the child is not breathing, start resuscitation.

When the child's breathing is restored, continue to monitor breathing and pulse.

Fix the head and torso of the child in the position in which they are.

Cover the baby's head and torso with folded towels, blankets, or clothing. Press them to the body with heavy objects (books, stones). If the child is lying on his back, put under his neck - without moving his head - some thin pillow or a small towel. Make sure the collar of his clothes is free.

If emergency care has left for you, you do not need to do anything else.

If you have to transport the child yourself, call a few helpers. A stretcher can be any solid board (for example, ironing board), on which the child is placed in full growth. Keeping his head, neck and back in a straight line, turn the child on his side, put a stretcher under him. Turn the child onto the stretcher while supporting the head and torso. Fix the head and torso of the child in the position in which they are. Cover the baby's head and torso with folded towels, blankets, or clothing. Tie the child securely to the stretcher with ropes, straps, ribbons, or strips of fabric. Keep the stretcher level when transporting.

ATTENTION!

In case of spinal injuries, do not tilt, turn and raise the head and body of the child, as well as move the child until the doctor arrives. If the child is wearing a safety helmet, do not remove it.
