Fundamentals of First Aid (OPMP)

Burn - damage to soft tissue, usually caused by exposure to high temperatures, chemicals, electric current or sunlight.

According to the depth of tissue damage, burns are divided into four types: first degree (reddening of the skin), second degree (appearance of blisters on the skin), third degree (charring of the skin and underlying tissues), fourth degree (damage not only to the skin, but also to muscles, tendons, joints). As a preventive measure, it is recommended to strictly observe the rules of fire and electrical safety, as well as the safe use and storage of chemicals and the rules of being in the sun.

Medical care for burns

Call an ambulance immediately if a burn:

1) causes difficulty in breathing;

2) affects the head, neck, hands, feet or genitals;

3) is present in a child or an elderly person;

4) Caused by a chemical, explosion, or electric shock.

For first degree burns:

1) immediately cool the burn area with cold (but not ice) water. Never use ice;

2) cover the affected area with a clean damp cloth to relieve pain.

For second degree burns:

1) cool the burnt surface with cold water;

2) apply a wet or dry bandage to prevent infection;

3) before the appearance of edema, remove rings, watches and other objects from the affected person.

For third and fourth degree burns:

1) you can not treat the wound;

2) immediately deliver the victim to a doctor or call an ambulance.
