It is necessary to odorize the gas before supplying it to the consumer in accordance with GOST 5542-87 using an odorizing unit.

The odorizing unit is installed on the territory of the gas distribution station and operated in accordance with these Regulations, the Rules for the Construction and Safe Operation of Pressure Vessels, the Safety Instructions for the Production, Storage, Transportation and Use of Odorant, and the certificate for the odorizing unit.

As an odorant, mercaptans (ethyl mercaptan) or other substances and mixtures thereof can be used, which have an intense unpleasant odor at a low concentration in the gas and easy volatility at ordinary temperatures.

Odorants are harmful substances of the 2nd hazard class, the MPC of the odorant in the air of the working area of industrial premises is 1 mg/m3 in terms of carbon. The consumption rate of ethyl mercaptan is 16 g per 1000 m3 of natural gas.

In order to prevent the release of mercaptans into the environment, it is necessary to install ejector units, alkali traps and odorant vapor combustion units at gas distribution stations when filling underground tanks and service tanks at large gas distribution stations.

Premises for gas odorization and storage of odorant are gas-explosive and must be equipped in accordance with the requirements for premises of category B-1a.

In the premises of odorization installations and storage rooms of the odorant, it is necessary to periodically, according to the schedule approved by the management of LPUMG, analyze the air in the working area for the content of hydrocarbons and odorant vapors.

The floors in the odorization room and in the odorant store should be made of materials that do not absorb liquid.

An odorant spilled on the floor or on the ground must be neutralized immediately.

The earth after treatment with a neutralizing substance must be dug up and re-treated with this substance.

The odorant should be stored in hermetically sealed containers (barrels, containers), which should be protected from sunlight and heating devices.

Containers freed from odorant must be stored and transported in a hermetically sealed state.

You can enter the odorization room and the odorant storage warehouse only in a gas mask with the exhaust ventilation turned on.

When receiving, storing, dispensing and transporting the odorant, workers must wear gas masks, rubber boots and mittens, and rubberized aprons.

The odorant storage warehouse must be equipped with fire extinguishing equipment and personal protective equipment for service personnel (rubber boots, mittens, rubberized aprons, suits, gas masks, etc.).

It is forbidden to open the container with the odorant and pour it indoors. After opening the outer cork on the odorant container, in order to avoid self-ignition of pyrophores that can form between the corks, a damp cloth should be placed around the inner cork.

During internal inspection or repair of the odorizer, it is necessary to completely free it from the odorant and steam it, the odorizer should be opened after the final steaming. At the same time, the MPC of the odorant in the air must comply with SN 245-71.
