Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Invulnerable electronics 15.03.2013

A team of scientists and engineers have succeeded in creating a tiny microchip, a millimeter-wave power amplifier that can recover even after serious damage. Scientists from the California Institute of Technology have created electronics that self-repair after damage. A device based on it will not be afraid of short circuits, radiation exposure, mechanical damage, etc. During the experiments, various parts of the microchip were even destroyed by a powerful laser, but still, the "smart" circuit restored its functionality in less than a second. At the same time, the chip is so small that 76 such devices can fit on a small coin.

“It was incredibly impressive. It seems to me that we were witnessing the next step in the evolution of integrated circuits,” says one of the developers of the unique technology, Ali Hadjimiri. “We literally blew up half of the amplifier and vaporized many of its components, including transistors. However, he was able to recover and showed near peak performance."

Until now, even minor faults often turn out to be fatal for integrated circuits. Scientists at the California Institute of Technology decided to create microchips that have something like an "immune system" that will detect a problem and restore the chip's performance. As a result, it was possible to create a prototype of such a microcircuit. The "invulnerable" power amplifier includes many reliable sensors that monitor temperature, current, voltage and power consumption. Information from these sensors is fed to the central processing unit, which acts as the 'brain' of the system. The processor analyzes the efficiency of the amplifier and, if necessary, switches the functions of certain components.

Interestingly, the "brain" does not function on the basis of algorithms, that is, it is not necessary to predict all kinds of breakdowns in advance. Instead, the processor draws conclusions based on the cumulative sensor readings. Simply put, the system always automatically finds the optimal configuration for maximum performance, "without being interested" in the cause of the breakdown. Thus, complex circuits can automatically maintain high performance under a variety of conditions, such as overheating or power failure. In the event of serious damage, such a microcircuit will retain at least minimal performance, which in some situations can save people's lives.

Today it is impossible to imagine any field of activity without electronics. In fact, our civilization is based on computers, and the reliability of these machines is of paramount importance. "Indestructible" microcircuits will undoubtedly be an important step towards ultra-reliable spacecraft, cars, aircraft, etc.
