MODELING
Rocket plane S-4-D. Tips for a modeler Directory / Radio control equipment In the autumn of 1978, with a group of rocket modellers, I was going to go to training camp in the Crimea. Literally a day before our departure from there, a telegram arrived at the Central Aircraft Modeling Club. Laconic lines brought joyful news - Valery Myakinin exceeded the world record for the duration of a flight on rocket plane models. For many aircraft modellers, this was a surprise: Myakinin, a recognized enthusiast of small aircraft - and suddenly a "rocket pilot"? And which! We all could not wait to arrive at the training camp as soon as possible. And now the fast train Moscow-Simferopol rushes us to the Crimea. Almost a day on the road I was not left thinking about the record. No wonder, because this is one of the first great achievements of Soviet rocket modelers-athletes. But I thought more about Valeria himself. Yes, his experience in rocket modeling (at the highest level) is not great: he only once attended training camps in preparation for the USSR team for the World Championship in Bulgaria. Then Valery did not get into the top three athletes who were leaving for the world championship, but the training camp became a good school for him as a “rocketeer”. It was then that he decided to undertake; attempts to record the duration of the flight of rocket planes. There were plenty of skeptics. Frankly, I also did not really believe in V. Myakinin's future records. Then only S. Zhidkov, the coach of the Soviet rocket modeling team, was firmly convinced of his success. Myakinin's ally, the coach believed, should be a great aircraft modeling experience. Zhidkov helped Valery to refine the receiver - to make it as light as possible, and provided reliable on-board power to the radio equipment. ...Our acquaintance took place in the summer of 1964 at the USSR Aircraft Modeling Championship held near Kharkov. We then played in the same team - the RSFSR team. V. Myakinin, at that time a student of the Kazan Aviation Institute, with a radio model, I - with a rubber engine model. In the final protocol of the competition, his name was listed in the second ten. Among the "radio operators" pilots in those years, V. Kumrov from Voronezh was the undisputed leader. Valery adopted all the best from him. Kumrov went to train, and Myakinin always went with him. Later, having somehow talked with Valery, I found out that he built his first model in the fifth grade. It was a miniature glider. He flew unimportantly. But for Valery, the main thing was something else - an indescribable feeling of joy - the model flew! He is building a new one with renewed vigor. Even then, the head of the circle, E. Kudrin, noticed that this persistent lad was constantly striving to introduce some innovations into a seemingly well-developed design ... Three years later, after graduating from high school, Valery was sent to work in Dubna. Here he began to play for the team of the Moscow region. We started seeing each other more often and became friends. But I rarely had to see him in action, at competitions. Our starts took place in different places, since for some time now the competitions of aircraft modelers have been divided into classes: cordovans (and I already competed with a cord model-copy) competed in Noginsk, then in Elektrostal, and "radio operators" "flyed" in Dubna and Serpukhov . Years passed. Valery firmly entered the ranks of the leading Soviet athletes: he was the champion of the USSR three times, in collaboration with B. Shkursky he became the owner of the world record for the duration of the flight of models controlled by radio. In 1976, at the USSR Championship, Myakinin won victories in all classes of radio models (glider, copy and aerobatics). He especially distinguished himself in model aerial "acrobatics".
The model was built specifically for record starts. This is a cantilever monoplane with a power plant, including two engines with an impulse of 10 n * s and 2,5 n * s, located behind the wing. The main material of the rocket plane is balsa. Wing type-setting: ribs, edges - from balsa, spars - from pine. Pasted over with long-staple paper, attached to the fuselage with rubber thread. The fuselage is glued from balsa plates. Compartment for on-board equipment - under the wing. Balsa stabilizer and keel 2 mm thick. The mass of the structure at the time of launch is 232 g. ...It was not summer-like cold, a gusty wind was blowing, and at times it was drizzling. Some participants refused to start: in such weather, the models easily lost height, they were blown away by the wind. A few seconds passed after Myakinin was called to the start. The engine started, and the model, obedient to its radio commands, confidently took off and went into the zone. The whole complex of figures was made at the required height and with great accuracy: Nesterov's loops - without displacement, eights - strictly in the given direction, symmetrical and with good purity. Watching the spin, it was hard to imagine that it was a model, and not a real aircraft, flown by an experienced pilot. Yes, many days of training at the airfield in Kimry were not in vain. Three gold medals have become a well-deserved reward for Valery for his work, perseverance and perseverance. By the way, the latter is a distinctive feature of his character. Preparing for the championship, in one summer day he made about 50 takeoffs and landings! To the ripples in the eyes, he made all kinds of figures: eights, barrels, loops, bringing them to perfection. During training, he burned a whole canister of fuel (15-20 liters), while the volume of the fuel tank for the model is only 250-300 g. ... The train slowed down, and from the speaker came: "Simferopol!" From the window they saw Valery on the platform. We were all happy for him, and he - as if nothing had happened, as if there was no record. However, Myakinin is generally stingy with emotions. He can lose in competitions, break the model, but this is unlikely to unsettle him. I remember how a rocket plane of an original design flew off at the training camp (the fuse went out), the other would have panicked, and he, as if nothing had happened, began to make a new one. - You brought good weather, - Valery greeted us, - it rained here for a week. He helped us load things into the car, got behind the wheel, and we set off. Ahead was more than two hours of travel to Planerskoye. As soon as the Zhiguli got out of the busy city stream onto the freeway, we began to pry the details of the record flight from Valery. - What to say? The best result in rocket gliders in the S-4-D class was for an American - 45 minutes 28 seconds. I managed to show 1 hour 9 minutes 49 seconds. - But how was it? we asked almost in unison. - Yes, everything is simple: took off, flew, sat down, - he answered, without looking away from the road. "Don't joke, buddy," I plead. - Yes, everything is as usual, you know yourself, - he says, sharply turning the steering wheel and almost not slowing down on a sharp turn. In the end, we still managed to shake him up. Valery said that they started on Mount Klementyev, a kind of Mecca for glider pilots of the 20s and hang gliders of the 70s, as well as a favorite place for small aircraft athletes. Mother nature created such a terrain - just a paradise for record flights! When the "yuzhak" blows, such powerful dynamic currents arise that you just fly and fly. The model was equipped with two engines with an impulse of 10 n * s and 2,5 n * s without a retarder. They need to raise the rocket plane by 30-50 m. The task of the pilot at the time of launch is to keep it during takeoff. I gaped a little, did not give the necessary command to the elevator - the wind will overturn the model. Prior to this start, Valery had already "put" two pieces there. You need skill and a good reaction - it can be compared with the reaction of a test pilot: after all, takeoff lasts only 1-1,5 s. During the conversation, we did not notice how we drove up to the two-story cottage of the Primorye camp site. - You will live here, - the old-timer Myakinin explained and added: - By the way, in a couple of days I want to launch my record holder again, come. The start was delayed. Only on October 5 we were able to go to Mount Klementyev. Aircraft modelers have already flown there. I had to move from them to the west by about 1,5 km. We decided to start from the slope just below the top. ...The preparation of the model and the launcher does not take long. Measured wind direction, speed (18-20 m/s). It's a bit much, but you can fly, although ordinary competitions would not be held in such weather. And now the sports commissioner gives the command: "Start!" The model breaks off the launch bar. The wind tends to overturn the rocket plane, but Myakinin, skillfully working with the control knob on the transmitter, gives the necessary commands in time. The model enters a powerful dynamic flow. I see how Valery breathed a sigh of relief. An hour later, he asks to put on his sun visor, his eyes are tired ... Soon the model went down and after a few minutes it landed softly. The judges record the result - 1 hour 33 minutes 17 seconds! Now Valery has more than doubled the world record! This day was "starry" for aircraft modellers as well. The radio-controlled model of the aircraft by Y. Zaslavsky and A. Smolentsev flew in a circle of 731 km, exceeding the world record of the American R. Weber by 48 km. A few days later, the attack on the records was continued, now in the S-4-F class of rocket planes (weight up to 500 g, and engine momentum from 40 to 80 N * s). And again success came to Valery - 1 h 39 min 19 s flew his model. All these outstanding results were recorded as all-Union achievements, and the material on them was sent to the FAI for registration as world records. Today, Valery Myakinin is perhaps the most titled athlete among the "radio operators". He holds three world and six all-Union records. On my way home, carefully packing my "sports armor," I asked him, "Well, what's next?" “You know that there are only five classes of rocket planes,” he replied. - Two of them seem to have mastered. I want to take on the rest. There are also aircraft models. So enough work... In early February of this year, again in the Crimea, on the "happy" mountain of Klementyev, Valery exceeded the world record in the class of S-4-C rocket planes: 11 min 58 s - such is his result! Now this message did not surprise me. I know: Valery Myakinin has a real record-breaking character. So, be his new victories, new records!
