Model skin imitation. Tips for a modeler

It is good to imitate the fabric covering of aircraft from the Second World War on copy models as follows. On the model that has not yet been primed with white enamel, according to the drawing, we mark the axes and edges of the protruding rigid elements (ribs, stringers, edges of the edge of the junction of the rigid sheathing with linen, etc.). Then, according to the marking, we glue the "ribs" of copper wire Ø 0,15-0,25 mm.

The wing, plumage, fuselage of a real aircraft are a power part with a rigid sheathing and a non-power part with a linen one - on the ribs of the ribs and stringers, the linen sheathing slightly "sags".

Stretching along the markup the wire that reproduces the ribs of the ribs and stringers, we press and draw along it once or twice with a brush dipped in enamel, highly diluted with acetone. After making sure that the wire is grabbed, cut off the excess ends with a sharp cutter or a piece of a razor blade. Thus, all "ribs" or "stringers" are glued in succession.

Rigid elements are simulated in the same way on the sections of the fuselage of the model with non-powerful "cloth" skin. Due to the long length of the "stringer" and, as a rule, poor approaches (often interfere with the plumage or wing), it is quite difficult to provide the necessary tension to the wire. In this case, the tension is carried out with the help of pins. The ends of the wire are fixed on the bases of the pins, stuck into the body slightly with an allowance from the points of the beginning and end of the "stringer". After gluing the wire with a sharp knife, cut off the protruding tips and remove them along with the pins.

Imitation of the skin of the model
Rice. 1. Imitation of fabric sheathing

Before applying the primer (white nitro enamel), the area with linen sheathing is isolated with a mask of adhesive tape, the shape of which must exactly repeat the geometry of the edges adjacent to the "linen" sheathing of the "rigidity" areas.

After that, the primer is applied. The mask should be removed after sanding the soil. During subsequent painting, due to the boundary of the ground coating, a fairly clear visible edge of the rigid sheathing is formed.

Imitation of the skin of the model
Rice. 2. The process of manufacturing "corrugated" sheathing: I - dense laying of wire; II - pruning; III - thinning; IV - "rolling" on the forehead of the aileron, processing the trailing edge.

On a model made, for example, on a scale of 1:50, the corrugation pitch should be 0,5 mm, and the width of the rib flanges at the junction of the skins should be 0,6-0,8 mm. The height of the corrugation is 0,1-0,2 mm. In the same way, the skin of the horizontal and vertical tails is also performed.

To imitate the corrugation, first of all, it is necessary to carefully prepare the surface of the wing for painting and draw out the places of the ribs. It is necessary to apply the boundaries of the smooth sections of the wing ("forehead" - to the front spar and the tip), then a thin copper wire Ø 0,15-0,2 mm - "corrugation" - is glued onto the surface of the wing - "corrugation" - with the necessary step. The most suitable for this purpose is varnished wire from the coils of radio devices.

The wire is wound evenly, coil to coil, so that all coils are parallel to the longitudinal plane of the model. We fix the first 20-30 turns on the selected section of the wing, previously lubricated with liquid enamel diluted with acetone. As soon as the entire necessary surface of the wing is covered with overcasting and fixed with a layer of enamel, you can "free" sections of the wing with smooth skin, carefully cutting off the excess wire along the marking, trying not to damage the fixed corrugation. Then, with the sharp tip of the knife, we “thin out” through the coil, carefully tearing off one or two subsequent ones, depending on the diameter of the wire. 3-4 wires are not thinned out at the joints of the skins along the shelves of the "ribs" - after coating they will imitate a wide "shelf" of the rib.

The hatches on the wing had a smooth skin - we cut the corresponding sections of the corrugation with the tip of a knife to the level of the wing surface. Then this area can be sealed with a piece of foil. The resulting corrugation is finally fixed on the wing surface with three or four thin layers of liquid enamel. Each subsequent layer is applied after the final drying of the previous one. At the same time, it is necessary to ensure that the enamel lays down in a thin layer, without local streaks and accumulations - otherwise the wires in these places may come off. Use the softest brush, the direction of its movement is along the "corrugation".

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>
