Ultralight heated jacket

Fundraising site Kickstarter is raising funds for the release of an ultra-light waterproof jacket with heating that can recharge mobile devices. According to the creators of a piece of clothing with such remarkable properties, it weighs only 80 g (obviously not including the mass of the battery).

Heating elements are located on the chest and back, as well as in the pocket area. The heaters are powered by a 10 mAh battery. As stated, its charge is enough for 600 hours.

The battery can be used not only as a power source for heating elements, but also for recharging mobile devices. The jacket can be machine washed and tumble dried. Two versions are offered: for men and for women.

A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. Wood waste batteries 09.04.2012

Scientists from the University of Technology in Poznań (Poland) and the University of Linköping (Sweden) have developed a battery based on lignin, a by-product of the pulp and paper industry. This discovery in the future may help in the creation of cheap batteries from plant waste, rather than expensive metals.

A new type of cathode consists of lignin derivatives containing quinones and electrically conductive polypyrrole. The composite material created by scientists effectively conducts an electric charge and can become the basis of a cheap battery. A thin film of material with a thickness of only 0,5 microns accumulates and releases energy in the process of redox reactions.

Lignin is the most common natural material after cellulose. Moreover, this brown substance is produced in large quantities by the paper industry and in the production of biofuels.

The advantage of using renewable materials like lignin to store electricity is that there is an abundance of these raw materials on Earth. Most plants contain 20-30% lignin, which is now simply burned. In turn, lithium-ion batteries require expensive and rare metals such as cobalt.

While lignin batteries have a number of disadvantages. First of all, this is a fast self-discharge, i.e. batteries are gradually discharged, even if no current consumer is connected to them. However, scientists have found that different lignin derivatives behave differently in battery cathodes. Therefore, there is hope that it will be possible to optimize the technology and create a battery that stores energy for a long time. But in any case, the disadvantages of a wood waste battery will be offset by its low price.
