TRIUM ARIA. Mobile phone review
Review
Mitsubishi Trium Aria devices are produced in two modifications: Trium Aria itself and Trium Aria@, which differ from each other in color and the presence of a WAP-browser in the latter (as evidenced by the @ sign in the model name). Otherwise, the devices are identical, so most of what will be said below applies to both modifications. The first thing that surprises when getting acquainted with the device is its design. It would seem that the ergonomic, smooth lines of modern mobile phones have won over right angles, but apparently Mitsubishi does not think so. Aria's silver body has the shape of an oblong parallelepiped with slightly rounded corners and edges and vaguely resembles Bosch 909D or Samsung 2200 phones. With its dimensions of 123 x 40 x 23 mm, Aria looks like a miniature elegant device. But most of all, the weight is stunning - only 90 grams! Since the silver color is associated with metal, you intuitively expect the phone to be heavy, but it turns out to be completely weightless. The device is well centered and fits comfortably in the hand despite the rectangular shape. The case is made of high-quality polished plastic, resistant to scratches. The battery, built into the back wall, is fixed with a very reliable latch, which prevents it from falling out of the phone. All parts, including the flip, are fixed precisely. In short, the quality of the device can be assessed as "excellent". The second surprise is the antenna, which extends along with the outer thickened part, which looks rather unusual. Apparently, this is more of a marketing move by Mitsubishi than a technological necessity (a retractable antenna is often associated with supersensitivity among users), but more on that below. On the top edge of the case there is an LED signaling an incoming call. Another feature of the Trium Aria device is the method of installing the SIM card: without removing the battery, you insert it into a special hole on the side of the device, covered with an elastic plug. A lever is provided on the back wall to eject the card. The cover keeps the card securely in place, making it unlikely to be ejected, however, when using the phone outdoors, moisture may get on the SIM card contacts. The case shows the correct position of the SIM card. A little lower on the side wall of the device is a hands-free connector, also closed with a polymer cap. A good solution is the luminescent backlight of the screen, uniform, pleasant blue color. There are no LEDs visible at the edges, which makes the display look like the screen of an electronic watch. In the dark, such a backlight is simply enchanting - it is impossible to take your eyes off. In combination with the bluish, almost white glow of the keyboard, the device leaves an unforgettable impression. Equipment, ergonomics As standard, Trium Aria devices are supplied in a box with a mains charger and instructions. In my case, the phone turned out to be French-made with instructions in Polish (given the novelty of the model, I think you can forgive the lack of instructions in Russian). The device's menu is Russified very competently - it will not be difficult even for novice users to understand it. The dimensions of the charger (apparently, pulse) allow you to carry it with you without much discomfort. The duration of a full charge of a Japanese-made lithium-ion battery is, according to the manufacturer, 1 hour 30 minutes, which to some extent compensates for its insufficient capacity - 580 mAh. With intensive use of the phone, an hour and a half charge is enough for three days (with switching off at night). Trium Aria is equipped with a fairly powerful vibration alert, which, combined with a light body, gives an excellent result: in silence, the vibration alert is even audible. The device is equipped with a flip, it is inactive and only protects the keyboard. You can use the basic functions of the device without opening the flip, as the main control keys are located above it. These buttons have a mirrored metal finish and are not backlit; they are arranged quite ergonomically. The two keys below the screen are combined into one oblong, the names of the functions they activate are displayed directly above them. In standby mode, the left half of the key includes the phone book, the right half - the phone's menu. The buttons below the oblong key are used to start a call (left), move through the menu (middle) and cancel / end a call (right). When you press the call start key in standby mode, a list of the last dialed numbers is displayed, which is undoubtedly very convenient. At first, the possibility of moving through the menu in only one direction (along the ring) seems to be an unsuccessful solution. However, after a few hours of using the device, you get used to it. It should be noted that with the flip open, using the * and # keys, you can move through the menu in both directions. The main keyboard is rubbery, white, with clear, well-readable inscriptions in the dark. In addition to the standard alphanumeric keys in the top row are (from left to right): a button to turn the phone on / off, an options button (context menu), a programmable hot button for quick access to menu items and a volume button. When you press the keys, an original "gurgling" sound is heard, which can be called the "calling card" of phones under the Trium trademark. The phone screen is graphic high-contrast. In most cases, the screen fits 4 lines of text of 13 characters each + a line of on-screen key signatures. Fonts are scalable; both lowercase and uppercase letters are provided, bold font. In standby mode, the signal level (4 divisions) and battery charge (3 divisions) are displayed on the top of the screen, the name of the operator is in the center, and the current time and date are below it. The screen contrast is adjustable, the backlight can be turned off. Phone menu, functions Menus have always been Trium's strong point, and the Aria is no exception. Few phones can compare with the Trium Aria in terms of colorfulness and clarity of icons, in terms of the logical alignment of points and sub-points. Entering the menu from the standby mode is carried out by pressing the right half of the oblong key. The sequence of menu items is as follows:
Although the menu is Russified correctly, the name of the Organizer (Office Tools) item is a little confusing. It contains Notepad, Currency Converter, Alarm Clock and Auto Switch, and the organizer itself is hidden in a separate item called Diary. Up to 20 events can be entered in the diary with single or repeated (daily or weekly) reminders. There is also a calendar where days with important events are marked with icons. An interesting feature is the auto switch. It allows you to program the time to automatically turn off and turn on the phone, which is very convenient when periodically turning off the phone at night. The phone book can store up to 100 entries in the phone's memory and up to 255 on the card. Records are accessed by the first letter of the name or by brute force. It is possible to copy entries from the phone memory to the SIM card and vice versa, but you cannot copy the entire phone book at the same time. When dialing a phone number in international format, you can call up the list of countries by holding down the *(+) button. When you select the desired country, the code is entered automatically. The device has an auto redial, as well as the ability to dial the nine most frequently used numbers with one button; You can answer the call with any key. The most enjoyable part of using the Trium Aria phone is, of course, reading and sending messages. A new message is opened as a result of a single click. The header shows the name or number of the sender, the date and time of departure, the first line of the message. If the message came via INTERNET, the sender's e-mail is read when opened (it goes in the first line). Up to 4 lines can fit on the screen at the same time. Scrolling per screen (like Nokia phones), manual or automatic with a delay of a few seconds. There is a function to remove a number from a message to add it to the phone book. When typing a new message, a symbol map appears in the form of a strip, which allows you to see the characters available to the current key. By long pressing the # key, all available special characters (@, #, &, !, etc.) are displayed on the screen, and any of them can be immediately entered into the text. When the message is ready, the address can be "taken" directly from the phone book. The phone remembers the last ten received and missed calls, as well as ten dialed numbers. In addition to the date and time, Trium Aria records the duration of each of the last ten calls to the nearest second. Among phones of the initial price level, this feature first appeared in Trium devices, and, in my opinion, it is one of the most useful, especially when using tariff packages with free minutes. The device has the function of giving every minute sound signal to control the talk time. The phone I used was programmed with 8 European menu languages and 12 ring tones. The melodies are pleasant enough, but the lack of traditional telephone trills was disappointing. Unfortunately, there is no possibility to enter ringtones. The volume of the call, conversation and signal is adjusted separately (8 levels). For quick access to the volume controls, there is a special button in the top row under the flip, which was mentioned above. Very well implemented access to phone profiles. When you press the menu navigation button located above the flip in standby mode, the "Call tones" list appears, consisting of the following items: Ring, Vibrate, Vibrate and Ring; Vibrate then Ring. There are two games: Reshape and Push, both logical. Colorful graphics, animated splash screens and menus are reminiscent of the once popular GameBoy console. Speech quality, sensitivity In general, the audio characteristics of the phone tested for three weeks were on top. The quality of speech left a pleasant impression: the sound is clear, but soft, natural. The volume margin is sufficient, but in places with a high level of noise, a few more decibels would not hurt. In the zone of reliable reception, the phone works flawlessly, but where the signal is weaker, clicks are sometimes heard. A similar effect was observed under similar conditions in Motorola V2288, but it was more pronounced there. The retractable antenna increases the sensitivity of the device, but here's what's interesting: in case of good reception, when the antenna is extended, one or two divisions are additionally displayed on the signal level indicator. If the connection is not very good, a retractable antenna is of little help. Comparative testing of the sensitivity of Motorola V2288, Nokia 3210, Nokia 5110 and 2 Trium Aria devices (from different batches) was carried out in places with a weak signal level. Where the Nokia 3210 did not work at all, and on the Nokia 5110 one bar sometimes appeared, the Motorola V2288 kept the network stable, showing one or two bars, but it was not always possible to make a call from it. The Trium Aria often lost network in this area, even with the antenna extended, but it was able to make calls more often, and the voice quality was quite satisfactory, although there were occasional clicks. Another device Trium showed similar results, which allows us to talk about a low spread of parameters in individual instances, that is, a well-established technological process. Summary The Trium Aria phone leaves a lot of pleasant impressions at a very low cost. Given that the average retail price of this device in Lviv at the time of writing was about 90 USD, we can safely assume that the Trium Aria device has a great future. Stylish design and weight of 90 grams allow you to safely recommend this model to ladies. No wonder the company Mitsubishi described its brainchild as "petite and powerful" - elegant and powerful.
