SONY Z5. Mobile phone review
Review
The box contained advertising brochures, a manual in German, a phone with a battery, a phone strap, a travel charger, and a desktop charger. Moreover, the latter does not have its own power cable and uses the entire travel charger. So you have a choice of how to charge your phone: in the desktop cradle or by simply plugging the plug directly into the phone. The connector on the phone is securely protected by a rubber cap and should be opened before recharging. It is impossible to make a mistake when connecting the plug. When using desktop charging, just put the phone in the cradle, and charging starts immediately. On the phone, the charging process is displayed on the battery indicator, which consists of three bars. The indicator is small, it blinks when the phone is on, nothing happens when the phone is off ... The general impression of this indicator is inconvenient and inexpressive. A more reliable indicator can be an LED located on the battery. When the battery is charging, it is red, at the end - green. When using desktop charging, this LED is practically invisible and you have to look under the phone. The phone comes with a 620 mAh lithium-ion battery. It is enough for an average of 1-2 days, but the indicator shows anything. So, after a long conversation, immediately after a full charge, the indicator displayed one division out of three (battery charge), but the phone still worked for about a day and at the same time I talked a lot on it (30-40 minutes). One gets the feeling that the indicator shows the level of charge is very approximate and not accurate. Charging time for a fully discharged battery is about 1.5 hours. A few words about design Before turning on the phone, you had to insert a SIM card. The holder is plastic, while the card is inserted into the slots and lowered down until it snaps into place. To open the holder, you need to move its upper part to the left. The whole structure looks quite fragile, but I think that it can last a long time. After inserting the card, you need to insert the battery, which also serves as the back panel of the phone. Separate words deserve the silver color of the plastic. It is very similar to the similar color of the audio players of the company of the same name. I don’t know how this phone will be worn, but on the players the silver color peels off at the corners after six months. I think that this phone is possible. Unfortunately, such things as body paint are not covered by the warranty, and it will not be possible to change the phone. (Here we consider a hypothetical situation, since there is no data on how the Z5 will introduce itself over time. Too new a model not only for ours, but also for the Western market.) External fixed antenna, speaker and side inserts are made of dark gray plastic. Looks very nice. The dimensions of the phone are quite small: 88x49x21.5 mm, to match the weight of 82 grams. But at the same time, the phone is wide and holding it for a long time in the palm of your hand is not very convenient. Later you realize that the wide device was made for the convenience of using the wheel (Jog Dial). This wheel, located at the top left, allows you to navigate through the menu and select the desired items. The wheel rotates in both directions, it can also be used as a button - it reacts to pressing and to deviations from the plane. The undoubted advantage of the Jog Dial is that during a conversation, access to various menu items is quite simple with a certain skill. The last thing that needs to be said is the cover that covers the keyboard. At the same time, the display of the phone is also partially covered, but the remaining part displays all the necessary information, for example, the caller's number, and it is not necessary to open the cover to see the display. In standby mode, a line of icons, clock and date are visible. On the inside, the cover has a rubber insert in order not to scratch the display. On the sides of the lid there are large protrusions that allow you to open it even with one hand. Turn on the phone When you turn on the phone, an animated screensaver appears; by default, these are clouds rushing over the city. It looks impressive enough, and there are three screen savers in the phone. There is a flow screensaver and billiards. The first screen saver is very indistinct, and balls just roll around in billiards. In addition to the splash screen, it is possible to create a welcome message, but, unfortunately, only in English, despite the fact that the menu supports Russian. The same applies to sending SMS messages - only in English. After switching on, a nice analog clock (dial), the name of the mobile operator, date, time in digital format and, finally, a line of icons on top appear on the display. In standby mode, the watch face moves around the screen in different directions, and since it is translucent, all the information is still visible under it. In the line of icons you can see the already mentioned battery indicator (3 divisions), the signal indicator (4 divisions), as well as indicators for SMS messages, vibration mode, voice mail, answering machine and no network signal. The display of this device is a high-contrast graphic, and the last parameter can be adjusted to your liking, only 20 divisions, from -10 to +10. Resolution 96 by 72 pixels. The backlight is a pleasant green color, not blue, as it is written in the description of this model on Cellular. And when you turn off the backlight does not go out immediately, but gradually, which looks very nice. Now it is worth dwelling on the menu and the Jog Dial in detail, since without it it is impossible to navigate through the menu. With the phone cover open, just press the wheel and a menu will appear in front of you. Turning the wheel scrolls through the menu items. In order to enter the desired item, just click on the wheel. Return to the upper level is carried out by tilting the wheel towards the front panel of the phone or pressing the "C" button on the keyboard. Deviation of the wheel towards the rear panel with the lid closed brings up a panel with ringer profiles (Manners mode), from which you can select a silent ringer, no sound and no vibration alert, a ringer with a single sound signal, only a vibration alert or turn off these profiles. Swinging the wheel back with the lid open reveals a bar with buttons to the Internet browser, email program and games. You get used to using the Jog Dial quite quickly and without problems. True, all the time you get confused in the main menu and skip the desired item. Now a few words need to be said about the menu. All parameters are accessed via the Jog Dial and this is the only easy way. With this phone, you need to forget about digital sequences for quick access to menu sub-items. To enable or disable the click when pressing the keys, you need to get into the menu item Details and then to Settings and only then Key sound. I hasten to please that the depth of the menu, as a rule, does not exceed 3 levels. It follows from this that the wheel will not have to be rotated so long and hard. First of all, using the smart wheel in the phone, the menu language was set to Russian. Calls and other joys of life The phone fits easily into a shirt pocket or jeans pocket. The vibrating alert in the pocket feels normal, and the sound signal is distinguishable. In total, the phone has 27 sound signals. Having set the ringtone, I immediately got into the phone book. It deserves a special mention as it can store up to 500 numbers along with names. For each entry, when entering, you can select an icon with which the entry will be displayed in the list. There are the following options - phone, home, office, mobile, fax, pager and more. Each name in the phone book can be assigned up to 3 phone numbers and 2 text notes with icons, as well as select one of 9 caller groups. By default, there is only one Friends group. For each group of subscribers, you can assign your own sound signal when calling (out of 27 available and 3 of your own). For groups, there are more icons, choosing according to your taste is quite simple. When scrolling through the phone book, you can see the names, but as soon as you stop the wheel on the name, a pop-up line appears on top with the first phone number for this entry. Also, to the left of the entry in the box, the number of the subscriber group is shown (if the number belongs to any group). Everything is quite simple and logical. You can see how much memory is used using the phone book menu (book menu in the phone) using the Memory status command, which shows the number of entries in the SIM card memory to its total capacity and similarly for the phone memory. Below is the total percentage of memory usage. Thus, if the memory of the card is also counted, then the total number of entries can reach 730. However, when numbers are written to the SIM card, only one number corresponds to one name. You can set what type of memory (card or phone) will be used by default. Now it is worth saying a few words about the sensitivity of the device. Testing was carried out only in Moscow (MTS and Beeline), as a rule, in the city center. The device showed an average sensitivity, I would characterize it as better than Ericsson T28s, but worse than Nokia 8210 by an order of magnitude. At the same time, the sound quality in the speaker is very good. The echo was not observed during the entire time of using the device, but the noise was when it was used in rooms with poor reception. In crowded places, the volume of the speaker was sometimes not enough. In the very first days, I noticed that the network sometimes disappears and the phone is re-registered. If you do not look at the phone, you might not notice it, but my phone was lying on the table in the office all the time in front of me. I think that the same thing happens with other devices, but people just don't pay attention. The second shock was waiting for me when I turned on the auto-dial function. When the number was busy, the phone turned on the auto-dial function and then a blank phone screen and that's it. The same happens when manually dialing a number (the number you just called and it was busy). I had a suspicion that the network was to blame, and I changed the SIM card. With a SIM card from Beeline, the situation repeated itself and I began to sin on a specific phone. I had to go to several sales offices and look at the phones there. The situation was repeated with other phones. Of all the trips, I only learned that the Sony Z5 is sold in Moscow exclusively with instructions in German, and Russian instructions do not exist in nature. I tried to clarify the situation with the incorrect operation of the auto-dial function in the Russian representative office of Sony. There I was told that this model is not officially supplied to Russia and, accordingly, no support is provided for it. Indeed, the guarantee for the phone is provided only by the company that sells it. My personal opinion is that this behavior of the phone is mainly due to the incorrect operation of the software. In the future, I only became convinced of this thought. When trying to use the CCIS service in MTS (automatic connection of services), I had to face the fact that the phone did not send a keystroke signal when the connection was established. Changing the settings for the key sound in the menu did nothing. And only a full return to the factory settings gave the result. The situation repeated again 3 days later. But enough about the sad... Every comfort… Nothing pleases more than all sorts of pleasant trifles. There are many in this model. Let's start in order with the clock. As already mentioned, the dial crawls across the screen (it can be turned off), but it is possible to adjust the time zone. You are shown a nice map on display and city names. But Moscow is not on the list. However, you can add a city by directly pressing the JOG DIAL back on the world map and then selecting the "Add city" function. The second nice thing was the answering machine mode. You record your voice message and turn on the answering machine. Now you can safely leave the phone for a lunch break in the office (it must be turned on). All callers will hear your voice and be able to dictate a short message to you. I emphasize that this is not a network service, and it is fully implemented in the phone, that is, if the phone is not registered in the network, then the caller will not hear the answering machine. Auto answer mode can be enabled for all incoming calls or only for a number you specify. In addition to the answering machine, the phone has a voice recorder. You can save up to 14 twenty second notes. To record a conversation, just press the Memo button on the keyboard, the duration of the recording is not more than 20 seconds, to continue recording, you need to press this button again. At the end of the conversation, you can listen to the recording by pressing the Memo button. You will see a list of voice notes indicating the date and time, and if the recording was made during a call, then the list will contain an icon indicating whether the call was incoming or outgoing. There is no voice dialing in the phone, although one could expect the implementation of this function. The list of received and made calls consists of a maximum of 30 numbers and each entry has a timestamp. Calculator. Very handy and functional calculator. One of the best implementations on a mobile phone that I have seen. The screen contains buttons with numbers and symbols that correspond to the phone keypad. A separate button is assigned for multiplication, division, subtraction and summation. The signs on this key change sequentially and also cyclically, thus, scrolling through the list to the desired sign, you just have to dial the desired number and click on the equal sign (at first you also need to enter a number, but this is already mathematics). Other amenities relate to hours. You can set a timer. Also, it is possible to set an alarm, but only with three types of signals. Melodies cannot be turned on in the alarm clock. The alarm clock can be set both for daily operation and for one-time operation. Also, in this menu, you can set the time at which the phone will automatically turn off. The calendar for 500 entries allows you not only to keep the text of the entry, but also assign an icon for the event. You can turn on an event reminder either 5 minutes in advance or at a scheduled time. In the calendar, the date for which there is an event is highlighted in bold. The phone has two games: a fisherman and a hunter (the names are free). To access them with the keyboard cover open, tilt the Jog Dial back. A panel with three buttons will appear, the last one will be the Games button. In the first game, you need to shoot at the plates from a gun, and you only need to pull the trigger in time, the sight moves vertically by itself. When fired, in addition to the sound, the vibration signal also works - the feeling is interesting, but quickly gets boring. The second game is about fishing. In it, you can adjust the depth of the hook and if a fish comes across it, then pull it out. Fish are unnecessary (sharks) and necessary. When pulling a fish, its picture is shown. An uninteresting game, but the vibration signal is also present. WAP, SMS and mail This phone has a WAP browser version 1.1. But before talking about it, let's look at SMS. The set is quite standard - messages up to 160 characters long, English language, T9 predictive typing for English, delivery confirmation, as well as a call to the SMS sender. Apparently, there is nothing extraordinary in the field of sending short messages. But let's take a closer look at the WAP settings using the example of connecting to MTS. Settings to be made are in bold. Open the keyboard cover and press the wheel back. Select the Browser button and then the install key. Here we create a new setting from an empty one and call it MTS Wap, when choosing this profile, select the edit menu item. In the home page section, you need to install wap.mts.ru, then go to the top level and set the server type to WAP. Specify the data in the server protocol. In the provider menu, enter the Dialing item and set the number 0885 (You must have the Data transfer service activated, included in the Mobile Office package). Here we specify MTS in the username. A password is not required to connect, and we do not touch this item. In CallDataType. you need to install Arrow. Now it remains to set the server address in the GW server to 212.44.140.13, you can also set the GW port to 9201. In the last item Details and then Pause, set the value to 300. All the necessary settings have been made and it remains only to establish the created connection as home, for this you need exit the connection properties editing menu and select SetDom, in the list our connection on the left will be marked with a square. After setting up the connection, we can use the WAP browser. To do this, just select the Browser button and the phone will connect to the wap.mts.ru server. The adjacent button on the Favorites panel, here you can create bookmarks for the most visited resources. Bookmarks can be created in advance. The settings for working with mail are similar to those done by us with slight differences. You will need to fill in the data on POP3 and SMTP servers for your mailbox, data on your email address, and also indicate your provider's phone number, login and password. Using your phone as a mailbox would be very expensive and in most cases an unnecessary waste. Results Today in Moscow, of all the accessories, only a car charger is available and that's it. You can find a phone case, but you have to look for it. Also, while writing the review, I found out that there is a cable to connect the Sony Z5 to a computer. But there is currently no program for synchronizing data on a phone and on a PC, simply writing SMS messages and other things. However, there is no infrared port on the phone, which does not allow using the built-in modem (9600 bps) with laptops. There are no handsets available for sale yet. Despite the fact that the phone comes with a 620 mAh lithium-ion battery, its capacity is enough for 1 day of active conversations (about an hour). The flaws in the software are not critical, but very annoying. At the last moment it turned out that they are typical for all phones supplied to Europe. Perhaps the last drawback is the unstable paint on the case. In my opinion, it will be enough for six months of active use of the phone, and then it will look skinned. Now there are only advantages. The phone is very stylish and using the Jog Dial really makes it easy to navigate. The menu system is thought out, and moving through it is not difficult.
