SONY CMD-Z7. Mobile phone review
Review
The phone in many respects resembles its predecessor CMD-Z5 - the same contours of the body, similar colors. The body of the device is traditionally made of silvery plastic. The quality of painting is high - the phone is not rubbed in pockets. The dark gray inserts on the sides are also made of plastic. The external antenna has disappeared in the CMD-Z7; the dimensions of the device have changed slightly (91 x 50 x 25 mm with a weight of 95 grams). The phone is wide and fits well in the palm of your hand. Located on the left side of the JogDial is very convenient to use. The CMD-Z7 uses the Advanced Jog Dial 5D, which has additional features compared to the wheel in the Sony Z5. In particular, the improved Jog Dial has 5 degrees of freedom, which is reflected in its name. You can scroll the wheel up or down, tilt it in two directions, and also press it. Navigating through the menus is done using the Jog Dial only. On the right side surface there is a connector for a telephone headset covered with a rubber plug. Below is the charging indicator, which notifies the user with a red glow that the battery charging process has not yet been completed. At the top end you will see a recess for fixing the phone in the handsfree stand. An interface connector is located at the bottom end. The charger is connected on the right; on the device, the connection point is not indicated in any way, although inserting the plug on the left still does not work - different sizes. On the rear panel there is a speaker, which is used to play melodies, and also performs a speakerphone function. Adjacent to it is a connector covered with a rubber plug for connecting an external antenna. Looking at the phone from the front, you will see that the keyboard and half of the display are hidden by a flip. In standby mode, the status bar is visible on the screen - icons of the battery charge level, signal strength, as well as icons informing about missed calls, enabled modes and functions (for example, an alarm clock). With an incoming call, the caller's phone number will be displayed here, and you will calmly find out whether to answer your call or not. Flip opens with one hand thanks to the protrusions provided on it. Under the flip is a keyboard made of translucent plastic. When the backlight is off, the numeric keys are cast in blue. The function keys, painted to match the color of the body in silver tones, are placed in a separate column on the right. The medium-sized keys are located close to each other, which creates some discomfort when dialing a number. Traditionally, for phones with a flip, the keys of the lower row are pressed heavily, and the bevel on the body, which, in theory, should facilitate pressing the keys, does not save the situation. When the backlight is on, the black inscriptions on the keys are clearly visible, but on the street they sometimes glare strongly and the symbols become indistinguishable. The backlighting of the keys, like the backlighting of the screen, is orange. The CMD-Z7 screen is notable for its size, it is large and contrasting, it supports 4 shades of gray. Display resolution (96x92 pixels) allows displaying up to 6 lines of text plus a line of icons. Dynamic change of fonts is provided; screen contrast is adjustable. A pleasant amber backlight, when turned off, goes out instantly, and not gradually, it also turns on. The CMD-Z7 has a 680 mAh lithium polymer battery. According to the manufacturer, the phone can work from 50 to 220 hours in standby mode and from 5 to 8 hours in talk mode. The time to fully charge the battery is about 1.5 hours. Indeed, in the conditions of the Moscow Beeline network, the device consumed surprisingly little energy. So, on average, with 10 minutes of calls per day, using an alarm clock and 3-4 reminders, the phone worked for about 3 days. The total conversation time was 35 minutes. By the way, the charge level indicator is dynamic, that is, it has no divisions, but, as practice has shown, transitions from one level to another do not occur smoothly, but abruptly. The design of the SIM-card holder in this phone is very similar to that used in some Siemens devices: the card is inserted into a sled, which then slides into the case. Menu As already mentioned, the menu can only be accessed using the Jog Dial. By the way, in standby mode, tilting the wheel down from the screen brings up a quick menu that allows you to change the current profile (turn on silent mode, vibrate, etc.). To get to the main menu, you need to open the flip and press the Jog Dial. A carousel-type menu will open for your eyes, you will move around by rotating the wheel, select an item - by clicking on it, exit to the top level is carried out by deflecting the Jog Dial up to the screen. Navigating through the submenu lists is quite easy, you just need to turn the wheel in the desired direction. There is no quick navigation, but the menu is laid out logically and is easy to navigate. It is worth noting that you quickly get used to the Jog Dial. The main disadvantage of the design of the device is that it is intended for use only in the left hand - only in this case the thumb will lie on the wheel. We are talking about moving through the menu - of course, you can talk while holding the phone in both your left and right hands. So, if you remember, the quick menu is called up in standby mode by tilting the wheel away from the screen - three items appear: wap-browser, mail client and games. Let's look at the main functions of the device sequentially. I must say right away that the phone is not localized, so you will have to be content with the Latin alphabet. Phone book. The memory of both the device as a whole and the phone book is distributed dynamically. You can get into the notebook from standby mode with the flip open by turning the wheel up or down. The list of telephones will be displayed on the screen, the names stored on the SIM card will be shown under serial numbers, and the names stored in the machine's memory will be displayed along with an icon corresponding to the type of recorded telephone number. As you already understood, CMD-Z7 supports the recording of several numbers (up to three) in one name, while you can choose the type of number from the four presented (mobile, home, office, fax). In addition, for each name, you can enter up to two notes both in the phone memory and in the SIM card memory (if you change it, of course, the structure will be broken, nevertheless, this is a very convenient function). Up to 100 numbers are stored on the SIM card. For each note, you can choose your own type of icon from 42 presented in the phone. The text of the note must not exceed 40 characters, and the length of the name must not exceed 20. The device supports groups of subscribers, the number of which is very large: Friend, Girlfriend, Bank, Golf, Computers, Hairdresser, Drinking, etc. For any of the presented groups, you can choose your own version of the soundtrack. When there is an incoming call, the group icon and the name of the subscriber will be displayed on the screen, the selected melody will sound. Voice tags are assigned from the phone book (up to 10), recognition works well. The length of the speech tag is 2 seconds - you will have to limit yourself to short names, while checking for the identity of spoken words is not provided: a later repeat tag will simply not be called. Voice dialing is activated by pressing the Jog Dial. You cannot set multiple labels for one name, because they are not only assigned to a specific name, but are also assigned to the corresponding number by default. After the label is written, the dynamic memory allocation is displayed on the screen. The most interesting thing is that even after assigning the 10th label, about 50 percent of the memory remains free. This is explained by the fact that the phone shows all the memory for recording, including the voice recorder memory, designed for 5 records of 10 seconds each (the function also works during a call). The search in the phone book is organized very well: you just need to type the first letter of the name, so that all the names starting with it are displayed in the form of a list at the bottom. You can also enter the second letter, then the list will decrease, etc. It is possible to search for numbers by groups, and not all groups are displayed, but only those that are involved in your phone book. In total, up to 500 entries can be entered into the device's memory - I think this will suit even the most fastidious user. Messages CMD-Z7 allows you to store up to 10 short messages. 3 templates are pre-installed, 7 more empty slots can be used to create your own templates. When typing a new message, the time, date or phone book number can be automatically inserted into the text. In the settings, you can enter a postscript (32 characters in size), which will be automatically added to all messages. Along with messages, pictures and melodies can be sent, but only to other Sony devices (pictures are interesting, melodies are simple). In the Messages menu, you can configure the reception of broadcast messages, confirmation of sending, etc. It is in this section that you understand how logically the CMD-Z7 menu is organized. By the way, messages in Russian are perfectly readable. Sounds This menu contains all call settings. You can adjust the ringer volume (4 divisions), select a melody or ringtone tone (15+5), as well as record your own melody from the microphone. The phone allows you to create 3 melodies up to 10 seconds each. For any of the user groups represented in the device, a separate melody is configured. I want to note that the number of groups somewhat exceeds the number of tones and melodies, but I don’t think that anyone will be able to use all subscriber groups. From the presented 15 tones and short melodies (by the way, up to 5 signals of 2 seconds each can be recorded from a microphone), you choose a signal for an alarm clock, a short message, an organizer, and also turn the phone on or off. In general, the device provides the widest possibilities for personalizing the soundtrack of various functions. Voice memory. This is nothing more than a voice recorder. During a call, recording is activated by pressing the Memo key. A significant disadvantage of this function is the long recording procedure (about 304 seconds). In some cases, you may have to wait to continue recording. As already mentioned, you can record up to 5 notes (10 seconds each). They are removed individually or all at once. Settings This menu contains various settings that make it easier to use your phone. For example, the minute signal can be set to sound every 60 seconds during a call. Hidden here are functions such as auto redial, flip control, auto answer. Of the interesting settings, it is worth noting the ability to adjust the screen contrast and set wallpaper (2 standard pictures and 2 empty slots). This menu also stores all information about the cost and duration of calls; in phones from other manufacturers, as a rule, this is a separate item. Forwarding Here are the settings related to call forwarding. Call history The phone remembers 10 outgoing, 10 incoming and 10 missed calls with the date and time of the call. A number from the list can be stored in the phone book. Entries are deleted both from all lists at once and individually. Additionally This item gives you access to the clock settings, alarm settings (once or daily), minute countdown timer, functions such as world time and time signal (every 60 minutes, the phone plays a melody, notifying you of the new hour, while the signal can be set so that it works only from 8 to 20 hours). The calculator is implemented successfully: the phone keys are drawn on the screen - you just have to press them. The currency converter is traditional. Games. The phone has two games - Black Jack and Table Soccer. If the first game is known to many, then the second is not. In fact, Table Soccer is a variation of the famous table football, and not very well implemented: the ball often hangs out of reach of the players. E-mail. The POP3/SMTP mail client has well-thought-out settings, only messages in Russian are read only if they were sent in UTF-8 encoding. Schedule In the organizer, you can view the calendar for the month; provides a quick transition to the current or any other day. The organizer supports two types of events - Event and Case. If in the first case you enter an event and set the time of the signal and its type (just in time, ahead of schedule), then in the second you simply enter a task, which can then be marked as completed. For each entry (the length of which should not exceed 20 characters) you can set a separate icon. When entering events for the first time, you are not prompted to set the time and signal, this can be done later by selecting an event - such an organization seems to be very logical, since it is not necessary to enter data every time. It is possible to view all events in one list; days for which entries are made are underlined. The memory in the calendar is distributed dynamically, the maximum number of entries is 400. WAP There is not much to talk about here: a standard wap-browser that displays information, including in Russian. Impressions The phone that was tested had firmware version 4.1.2.2, although the latest available at the time of writing the review was 4.4.1. You can view the version by typing *#RELEASE# (*#7353273#). The impression from the phone remains twofold. On the one hand, an amazingly organized menu, a convenient arrangement of sub-items. There are unique functions (clock signal, for example), but standard functions (calendar) are implemented very, very well. The quality of speech reproduction is decent, the sound in the speaker is clear, at maximum volume, distortion, in particular the rattle of the speaker, does not seem to appear. The sensitivity of the phone is very good: where other devices gave in, CMD-Z7 worked, clinging to the network, but at the same time not providing normal communication. For example, I heard the interlocutor, but he did not hear me. Moreover, with a significant improvement in the signal level, the problem remained: the interlocutor still did not hear me. It remained to remove the battery and put it back in place - then the phone started working normally. Some interlocutors noted the appearance of metallic notes during a conversation with the Sony CMD-Z7. One gets the feeling that the phone automatically changes the speech codec during a conversation. What factors this function depends on remains unclear. And is it possible at all?! Undoubted advantages of the device are a very loud polyphonic call and pleasant melodies. The call is well heard in various conditions. The disadvantages include the impossibility of simultaneously using a vibrating alert and a regular call as a signal - either one or the other, this is inconvenient. By the way, the vibrating alert in the phone is very weak - you can't feel it even from a shirt pocket. The speakerphone works well, although at maximum volume a slight rattle becomes audible. The biggest disadvantage of the phone can be considered unstable operation with various types of SIM-cards. The "behavior" of the phone depends on the access time to the memory of the SIM card. In particular, when using the Jog Dial, the device may freeze, and in such a way that only removing the battery will help to cure it. There can be up to 4-5 such incidents per day with more or less active use of the phone. It's bad that a hung device does not receive calls, but it consumes battery power. Similar problems were observed with most Beeline and Megafon SIM cards - cards from MTS worked stably. Minor shortcomings include the fact that if there are missed calls, opening the flip does not activate the corresponding menu - an icon is simply displayed on the screen. Functionally, the CMD-Z7 is very similar to the Z5, most of the changes are purely cosmetic. In terms of thoughtfulness of the menu and functionality, this is one of the best phones on the market. However, all the advantages of this model are crossed out by the unstable software that has become the scourge of Sony devices, as well as the poor implementation of some functions (for example, a very weak vibrating alert).
