SIEMENS M50

With rounded shapes and an internal antenna, the model resembles the entire 45th line. The small size of the phone (109 x 46 x 23 mm) allows you to carry it in your jeans or shirt pocket. The weight of the device is only 97 grams, which is achieved through the use of a 600 mAh lithium-ion battery, hidden behind the back wall. The battery used has the same form factor as the batteries installed in the 45 series devices. According to the manufacturer, the phone's talk time is 6 hours, and standby time is up to 260 hours. Under the conditions of the Moscow MTS network, the device functioned for about 3 days with 35 minutes of calls and the use of other functions, in particular games (up to 30 minutes). In terms of operating time, the M50 in its class, of course, is not a champion, but not an outsider either. In Germany, by the way, the same phone was able to work up to 5 days with 50 minutes of calls: a qualitatively different coverage affects (and this despite the roaming mode!). In Moscow, a certain role could be played by the fact that the packet data service, which has not yet been put into commercial operation, is nevertheless enabled at MTS base stations, as a result of which the exchange of information with terminals causes additional energy consumption. But this is so, a lyrical digression. The time to fully charge the battery is about one and a half hours (although the instructions say 2 hours).

The M50 will be delivered to Russia in two colors - Chromium Orange and Chromium Blue. Not only the colors of the cases differ, but also the backlighting of the display - amber in the first case and blue - in the second. The technical characteristics of the screens are identical. The displays display up to 4 text lines of 16 characters each, as well as labels for soft keys; resolution - 101x64 pixels. In both cases, the information on the screen is clearly visible.

The keyboard is made of rubber, the keys are pressed with little effort. Under the screen is a double scroll key, on either side of it - two soft keys. There is a modification of the M50 model - MT50, which differs in the shape of the soft keys, made in the form of a swing, as, for example, on the Siemens S35. This modification of the M50 can be found on sale only in Europe, such devices are not supplied to us.

A separate key is provided to access the phone book. The numeric keypad is generally quite standard, the only inconvenience is associated with pressing the "0" key (bottom row, small size). In fairness, it should be noted that in the devices of other manufacturers, entering the number "0" when working with one hand also causes difficulties in the vast majority of cases.

The backlighting of the keyboard, unfortunately, is uneven: the number keys "2" and "8" are the most illuminated. This means that in bright light, the markings on them are not visible (the backlight is yellow!). At dusk and in complete darkness, all letters and numbers are clearly distinguishable, while indoors, on the contrary, the inscriptions on almost all keys are difficult to read. This is due to the uneven backlighting, which does not allow choosing the same lighting conditions for the entire keyboard.

At the bottom of the phone is a standard interface connector, similar to those used on the 35th or 45th series. On the rear surface there is a connector for connecting an external antenna. Finally, the last thing worth noting, speaking of design, is the ability to install ClipIt interchangeable panels.

Menu

Before proceeding to the review of the main functions of the device, it should be said that the M50 is the first phone from Siemens with a Russian-language input preinstalled at the factory (software version 9). In other models, it became available along with a firmware update. To take advantage of the new opportunity, the owner of the M50 will only need to select Russian from the list of suggested languages. You can change the language at any time, but for this you need to call the appropriate menu. Of course, switching is not as easy as in Ericsson devices (an additional step is required), but, for example, Nokia phones do not have this option at all (you need to set a different menu language).

Russification is done quite well, all menu items have digestible abbreviations, if necessary.

Phone book

The notebook in the M50 is quite simple. Only one phone number can be added to one name; in total, up to 50 numbers are stored in the device's memory. 4 groups of subscribers are supported: VIP, Family, Office, Free time. The user can name the groups at his discretion and assign a personal call to each of them. A double press on the phone book key brings up the group list, an additional press displays the VIP list. For individual names, you can set pictures (up to 50) from among those available in your phone.

Messages

Work with SMS is implemented as standard for Siemens phones, however, the possibility of sending messages in Russian has been added. In addition to 9 pre-installed, there is space for 5 templates that the user can write in Russian (up to 32 characters each). The machine supports concatenated messages up to 760 characters in total, as well as the EMS standard. There is no reception or sending of MMS messages.

Call Lists

Traditional lists of missed, received and sent calls (10 items each) with the time and date of the call. Here you will also find billing and settings for broadcast messages.

Contacts

From this menu, you can set up caller groups, send a group SMS message, make a group call, and set an alarm for certain days of the week.

Organizer settings are hidden here. You can create up to 10 text notes of 50 characters each, each of which can be assigned the status of confidential - in this case, to view the note, you will need to enter a code. Traditional reminders (up to 50) are provided, for which a sound signal and a repetition frequency (daily, weekly, monthly, every year) are set. Separately, memorable dates are entered that use the same memory as reminders - so the total limit for both types of entries is 50.

Internet/games

The wap-browser (version 1.2.1) is the first item in this menu. There is a new Kung-Fu game available via the Battlemail server, but, as always, not in our country: there is no necessary operator support. StackAttack2 is an interesting toy in which you play the role of a loader, sorting out boxes falling from above.

WaveGame - here you are a surfer trying to ride a wave - nothing special in my opinion.

Finally, this menu contains a melody manager that allows you to record your favorite melody (up to 4) or download it using a special service. Pictures are also viewed and downloaded here, which can later be used as a screensaver or in EMS messages.

Profiles

There are 8 profiles, each of which you can edit at your discretion: almost all characteristics can be adjusted.

Audio

This menu contains all the settings related to the operation of the ringer and vibrating alert. For incoming calls, reminders and messages, you can choose any of the 14 melodies or 6 tones provided in the phone (plus 4 of your own melodies). Ringer volume is adjusted separately for each group of subscribers and does not depend on the selected profile - this is an interesting feature.

Setting

Here, as the name suggests, you will find the rest of the phone's settings. Everything is quite traditional. It is possible to set capital letters - then the font size becomes much larger, and in the main menu, for example, only one item is placed on the screen, and not several, as with a standard font size.

Quick Menu

A user-customizable menu that consists of the most requested general menu items.

It should be noted that the M50 supports the GPRS function (class 8), which is advisable to use first of all for wap, and only secondly - for data transfer itself, which is explained by the absence of both an infrared port and a cable. You can connect the M50 to a PC using the cables supplied with the ME45/S45. Everything works properly, the settings are standard.

The phone also supports Java-applications, in particular games and Instant Messanger (analogous to ICQ on PC), but the operator's assistance is required for the latter to work. In Europe, the appearance of the corresponding service is expected at the end of July, and then only with a few operators in Germany. In our country, nothing is known about the support of such a function for Siemens phones, so the phones are not equipped with the Instant Messanger program, but if necessary, it can be downloaded later. In principle, downloading Java applications to the M50 is only possible over the air via operator services, but not via cable. This decision is clearly caused not by technical, but rather by marketing reasons, because operators earn money by providing applications for downloading to the phone.

Impressions

There are no complaints about the quality of voice transmission by the phone: the sound is clear, the loudspeaker volume is more than sufficient. In urban conditions, the phone proved to be worthy: the call is clearly audible on the street, the average vibrating alert is felt through the holster. Melodies are standard; a feature of this model is a somewhat muffled sound of the call signal at the beginning.

The advantages of the device include a lithium-ion battery, small size, as well as full compatibility with existing accessories for the 35th and 45th series. The disadvantages of the phone are a small notebook (apparently the result of the use of Java and EMS, which require significant memory resources) and uneven keyboard backlighting.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

In the United States will distribute land for the installation of solar panels 31.07.2012

US officials have issued a statement that large land plots will be identified in the US in the near future, which will be used for "green" energy. The government allocated funds from the country's budget for the development and mass installation of solar panels.

According to officials, solar power can and should be used in six southwestern states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah. These regions, according to politicians, are the most favorable for the installation of solar panels, and the weather conditions in them will allow the most efficient use of solar cells to generate electricity. According to the official report, the above states "have excellent solar resources, good potential for energy transmission", and the solar panels that are planned to be installed in them "have no negative impact on biological, natural, cultural and historical resources."

The decision to release public land for the installation of solar panels was made after the results of research published by the Center for American Progress, according to which only 1% of the total amount of renewable energy in the United States is installed in these states. “The development of solar energy in the United States is one of the directions that President Obama takes when he talks about expanding electricity production, improving energy security and creating new jobs. We plan to distribute some of the public land that is best suited for solar energy and simplify the process permitting the installation of solar panels will be an additional incentive for families to use renewable energy as well as for businesses," said US Secretary of Energy Steven Chu.

The website of the US Department of the Interior indicates that a total of 285 thousand acres of public land will be given for the installation of solar panels. If all goes according to plan, then in the next few years, about 7 million American families will receive electricity from the sun.
