SAMSUNG SGH-N400

The SGH-N400 looks unusual due to the retractable external antenna. The processes associated with its movement (in both directions) are performed automatically. In the menu, you can set two types of antenna settings: pressing the call and hang up key or opening and closing the flip (in the first case, the antenna extends, in the second, it occupies its original position). The solution is certainly interesting and worthy of attention. You can pull out the antenna manually, but in this case, when you close the flip or press the end button, it will be removed automatically.

The dimensions of the phone are quite small, only 112 x 45 x 17.9 mm, with a weight of 91 grams. The device is convenient to carry in the pocket of a jacket or trousers.

On the front panel of the phone there is a navigation key, a little higher - two soft keys, which are used to select menu items. They are also available when the flip is closed. By default, the keypad is locked when closed, but it can be manually disabled by pressing the left soft key. It is difficult to work with the keys when the flip is closed: the navigation key is too deeply recessed into the case, which, by the way, allows you to move through the menu in four directions, but does not respond to pressing - you have to use the left soft key, which is not always convenient.

When you open the flip, you will see the entire keyboard. The keys are made of rubber, they are very small and almost recessed into the case. To press them, you need to make a certain effort; the bottom row of keys is also inconvenient because it is adjacent to the protruding flip mount (it gets in the way). To be honest, the keyboard of this device is uncomfortable, and it is unlikely that this design flaw can be corrected with something.

On the side surface of the device there are volume keys and a key to launch the wap-browser. There is also a headset jack, covered with a rubber plug. On the front surface, to the right of the speaker, there is a service indicator that can be switched off from the menu; it is on by default.

The battery in the SGH-N400 is a 600 mAh lithium-ion battery. On the back surface you can see the inscription Pinaforina: this is the name of the design school that developed the appearance of the phone, its name now adorns the battery. According to the manufacturer, the battery life of the phone is up to 6 hours in continuous use or up to 150 hours in standby mode. As practice has shown, the phone can work up to 3 days without shutting down with 10-15 minutes of calls per day. The battery charging time is about 2 hours. The battery mount, as in all Samsung phones, is reliable.

The SIM card holder has undergone minor changes: the design has become more complex and, in my opinion, less robust; there is a suspicion that with frequent use you can break the holder. However, see for yourself, you can see everything in the photo.

Display, menu, user interface

This model has a large graphic display with a resolution of 128x128 pixels and blue backlight. The image is contrasty, well distinguishable, and with the backlight working it is generally excellent. I want to note that I really liked the soft and at the same time rich backlight of the display. When the backlight is off, in relatively low light conditions, such as in a room with fluorescent lights, reading may be difficult: it is not easy to see the text.

In standby mode, when the flip is closed, a series of icons are displayed on the screen: signal strength, battery level, vibrating alert mode, name of the cellular network operator, time, date, etc.

The user has the opportunity to change the standard screen saver shown in standby mode to one of 10 pictures (some of them animated) stored in the phone's memory. New images have been added to the images available in the N100. The disadvantage, which has not been fixed, is the inability to preview the picture. You will have to install the splash screen first, close the flip and only then see if you like it. As you can see, if you have 10 images, you can choose the best one for a long time, and given that they all have names (Image 1, Image 2, etc.), remembering where which image is located is quite difficult.

You can make it so that the clock is also displayed in standby mode (you will have to choose from 10 options for dials). The problem is the same: no preview.

Finally, the user can select the type of quick menu, more precisely, the items that will become available when pressing in one of the directions on the navigation key. You are offered 4 options - it seems to be a trifle, but very pleasant. Naturally, it is possible to assign to each destination an item of your choice, which adds value to the menu.

The menu itself is quite ordinary: animated icons are well drawn; You can navigate manually or using number sequences for quick access to individual menu items and submenus.

Phone Features

Let's briefly consider the capabilities of the device. There are lists of missed, received and made calls, each with a maximum of 10 entries. When viewing any of the records, well-structured information appears on the screen (look at the photo).

Working with SMS messages is extremely simple: input in Russian is not provided (only in English), and there is no support for reading Russian-language messages either. When the information channels (CB) are turned on, the information transmitted through them is displayed on the screen, there is no menu splash screen.

The N400 has rich audio features, such as a built-in answering machine, which, in particular, performs the function of voice mail. You can record your own message or choose from two preset messages (both in English).

There are features such as voice dialing (20 numbers) as well as voice tags that serve to access menu items. The phone recognizes the voice very well, there were no problems. You can record voice memos on the voice recorder in standby mode.

The phone book saves only the name and number, but each user is assigned an individual ringtone (from those presented in the device). The volume of the phone's address book is 250 cells (in addition to the SIM card memory).

By the way, the SGH-N400 provides 47 recorded tones and ringtones, and the built-in music editor allows you to create 3 of your own melodies. In general, the choice, of course, cannot be called poor, but the melodies are painfully piercing and too similar to each other. However, such sharpness of sound has a positive side: you can easily hear the phone in any noisy place. For SMS messages, you can select one of 10 tones.

Of the other phone settings, the ability to assign voice dialing or a voice tag to open a flip deserves special mention (activation of these functions can be disabled). Previously, in all Samsung models, opening the flip automatically led to the activation of voice dialing; this option could only be turned off by closing the flip. Now, leaving the flip active, you can set the basic settings in standby mode, which is very convenient.

Another long-standing bug has also been fixed, namely resetting the signal type settings when switching to silent mode and back from the keyboard. Here's what I wrote about the N100 some time ago: "When setting the most common ringer type - ringtone and vibration - everything works fine. But sometimes you need to mute the ringer, and this can be easily done from the keyboard by pressing (long press) on the key with the image of the vibration icon. The phone writes that it has switched to the vibration mode; pressing this key again turns off this mode and turns on the melody playback mode. But you can’t restore the mixed mode - you have to enter the menu again, which is very inconvenient. " Now this problem does not exist.

I repeat and write that the N400, like the N100, has a wonderful alarm clock. It can be set to a specific hour, a specific day and hour, and even a weekly schedule. In the latter case, you select the desired days from the list and set the call time. Everything is very simple. To wake up, you can choose one of the 5 presented melodies.

The calendar linked to the to-do list has an alert option. Some other features:

  • Simple calculator.
  • Time in different time zones.
  • Auto redial: the phone tries to reach the subscriber up to 10 times after a short period of time.
  • The software modem allows you to receive and transmit data at speeds up to 9600 bps.
  • Per-minute warning during a call.
  • Memorizing the number from the display in a notebook.
  • Wap 1.1, everything works without problems.
  • 5 games: Blackjack, Othello, Bacteria, Mole and Casino. Games may be good, but the images are too small: eyes get tired quickly.

Subjective impressions, conclusions

The sound quality is good, no wheezing, no words falling out. The phone has an average sensitivity and works more than well in urban conditions, in any case, the N400 is definitely better than the Samsung SGH-A300 in this parameter. The loudspeaker volume is enough almost always, it is higher than that of the N100. The disadvantage, in my opinion, is the rather rigid fastening of the flip, as well as its inconvenient location, more precisely the angle formed when opening. It is quite possible, however, that it is only a matter of my habits and tastes.

The vibrating alert is powerful, and in silence you can even hear it - it works with such force. It's really nice, especially considering that other manufacturers put weak vibrating alerts on new models.

I think that this model will find its customers, as the software bugs are fixed and now everything works as it should. In terms of sensitivity and sound quality, this phone does not lose to other business-class devices. For those who love Samsung phones but haven't changed their device yet, the appearance of the N400 will be good news. New buyers may well be attracted by the retractable antenna, although, in my opinion, it somewhat spoils the impression of the phone: it becomes like a toy. In a word, the N400 is a solid middling phone, equipped with all the functions necessary for a modern device, and even something more than that.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Self-healing concrete 19.06.2021

In Massachusetts (USA), researchers at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) have invented a concrete that can self-fill cracks of a few millimeters in 24 hours. Concrete is the most widely used man-made building material in the world, but it is brittle and prone to cracking under the influence of water, thermal changes, stress, road salt and other factors.

To produce a new type of material, Worcester scientists used an enzyme found in red blood cells - carbonic anhydrase. This made concrete four times stronger than traditional concrete. Self-healing is made possible by the fact that carbonic anhydrase reacts with carbon dioxide from the air, resulting in the formation of calcium carbonate crystals that fill cracks in concrete, strengthening the structure.

The new method significantly extends the life of concrete structures and eliminates the need for costly repairs or replacements. In addition, the invention will significantly reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emissions harmful to the environment.

"If tiny cracks can be automatically repaired as soon as they appear, they won't turn into big problems that require repair or replacement. It sounds like science fiction, but it's a real solution to a significant problem in the construction industry," the scientists say.
