SAMSUNG SGH-N100

In addition to the phone, the box contains a battery, a quick charger, a strap to carry the phone around your neck, as well as instructions in Russian and a warranty card in the form of a booklet. On 72 pages of instructions, all the functions of the phone are described quite clearly and in detail, so those who use devices from this company for the first time should not have any problems. In my opinion, Samsung phones are well thought out, making them a pleasure to work with.

This model is available in several color options; I tested a phone in Dark Gray color (dark gray) - a winning solution. The following colors are also available: Blue, Wine Red, Green, Silver and Gold. Phones will be supplied to our country in all colors except silver and gold, which are intended for the Asian market. Sometimes dark gray devices are marked Black, and this inscription was made by Samsung: it can be seen on the phone box.

In design, the N100 is a continuation of the 2x00 series of Samsung phones, but its dimensions (105x42x17.5 mm) and weight (83 grams with a thin battery) have become significantly smaller (with increased functionality). The active flip is decorated with two silver inserts; there are special protrusions on the side for easy opening of the lid with one hand. Indeed, thanks to these protrusions, the flip opens easier, but due to its smaller width (compared to the SGH2400), it became inconvenient to open it with one hand.

The silver insert can also be seen on the speaker: it looks very beautiful. Next to the speaker there is a service LED, which can (I would even say should) be turned off, since its value is very conditional. All Ericsson phones, for example, have a similar LED, and not a single model provides the ability to turn it off from the menu - feel Samsung's care for the user.

On the side wall of the phone there are rocker buttons that control the speaker volume or, in standby mode, the volume of the keys. Nearby is a jack for a telephone headset, carefully covered with a rubber cap, which is attached to the phone body. It is impossible to lose this plug. I would like to note that Samsung phones are generally distinguished by their good quality; Mechanical parts, including the casing, are made to last, so scratches will not spoil the appearance of the phone. In any case, I carried the phone with the keys for a whole week, but the case was not seriously scratched.

The battery mounting has changed somewhat compared to previous models: the battery is now more difficult to snap into the socket, but at the same time it holds an order of magnitude better and has no play in any direction.

The SIM card holder is simple and tasteful. The bottom edge of the card is fixed by fixed plastic protrusions, and the top of the card is pressed using a plastic latch on a spring. The installed SIM card has a slight free movement in the holder, but this does not affect the operation of the phone in any way, even with strong vibrations.

But back to the battery. The back surface contains the terminals needed to charge the battery in the desktop charger. To prevent contact of the terminals with the surface when the phone is lying, there are small plastic protrusions.

However, you can use the standard charger included in the package. Connection does not cause problems, it is impossible to insert the connector incorrectly. Charging a standard 800 mAh battery from a fully discharged state takes about an hour and a half. Talk time up to 3.5 hours, standby time - up to 90 hours, according to the manufacturer. In reality, these values are lower and in my case amounted to about two days with 10-20 minutes of conversation per day and receiving one or two SMS messages. Experimentally, I found out that when you turn off the reception of broadcast messages, the standby time increases by several hours, but that's all.

Now about the keyboard. There are two soft keys under the screen, with a navigation key between them. The number keys are located quite close, but it is difficult to make a mistake when choosing the right button. The keys themselves are made of plastic and require very little force when pressed. I like it.

Display, functions and menus

This model uses a polymer graphic display with a pleasant emerald color backlight (resolution 128x64 pixels); 1 line of icons, a line of inscriptions for soft keys and 3 lines of text are placed on the screen. The font size can change dynamically. In my opinion, the dimensions of the display are small, but due to the high definition of the image, all data on the screen is clearly visible in any light. Nokia 6210 has a larger display, but displays the same 3 lines of text (although the font size is slightly larger).

When turned on, an animated splash screen appears, followed by a welcome message that you can later change (English only). The screen displays the battery charge level (3 bars), signal level (6 bars), as well as a vibration alert icon if it is turned on. Then the name of the mobile operator, date and time appear; the bottom line is occupied by labels for soft keys.

By pressing the left soft key above which Menu is written, we will get to the menu. In this device it is hierarchical, each item and subitem is assigned its own number. So, for example, the seventh item of the main menu is Games. Once you enter it, you will see 11 items corresponding to 11 games. To select, for example, the game “Sniper”, you don’t have to scroll through the menu, just enter it and dial 7-5, convenient, isn’t it?! Moving through phone lists and scrolling through the text of messages is carried out using the navigation keys; To exit the menu, press the End button; to go up a level, press the right soft key.

Let's take a brief look at the main menu items.

Call records.

It stores three separate lists for missed, made and received calls, indicating the date, time of call, phone number and duration of the last conversation (for calls made and received). Each list contains up to 10 entries. The disadvantage of this program is that if you call the same number and they do not answer, then in the corresponding list this number will be repeated several times with different times indicated. Agree, if a new record was not created, but only the time of the last call was changed, it would be much more convenient, especially since it is quite easy to implement.

Only one phone from the list is displayed on the screen; you can view others by simply scrolling. There is a feature that is exotic in our country for calculating the cost of calls: our operators have not been honored to include its support in the list of their services.

Messages

Provides access to voice mail, SMS messages, as well as broadcast messages (tariff zone, channel 50 for MTS). It is possible to create up to 5 templates for SMS messages.

You can use the T9 predictive text input system to write SMS messages in English. Unfortunately, there is no Russian support.

Voice functions.

You can assign up to 20 voice commands to certain menu items, the list of which cannot be changed, however, with frequent use, a couple of labels will suffice. You can view and listen to tags (also 20) for voice dialing. It is convenient to manage them from this menu item, but for the first time it is better to enable voice dialing for a particular number from the phone book.

I want to dwell on the function of working with voice in more detail. When you initially record a tag, you will be asked to repeat the marker word three times and, depending on the result, you will confirm the label entry or be asked to repeat the procedure. When working in quiet rooms, recognition usually occurs without problems, but as soon as the noise level increases (for example, next to a road), reception immediately becomes less confident. Sometimes it seems that this feature was tested exclusively in South Korea, and was not tested in Europe: due to differences in phonetics, the phone does not always adequately perceive pre-recorded voice tags.

The same menu allows you to record three voice reminders, the total duration of which should not exceed 175 seconds.

And finally an answering machine. If you turn it on, callers will hear either one of two preset messages in English, or your own - choose. Naturally, the caller will be able to leave a short message, up to 35 seconds.

In the next item, which is called Tones, you can select a ring signal (tone or melody) from more than 47 presented, here you can also set up a signal for an SMS message: 10 options for melodies, a single sound or a silent light signal are offered. Here you can turn on the sound when you press the keys, adjust the ringer volume and, finally, create your own melody (up to three) on the staff.

The most interesting thing in this menu is the setting of an alert when calling. It could be:

  • only light
  • melody,
  • vibration,
  • vibration + melody.

When setting the most common ring type - melody and vibration - everything works great. But sometimes you need to mute the ringer sound, and this can be easily done from the keyboard by pressing (long press) the key with the vibration icon. The phone writes that it has switched to vibration mode; Pressing this key again disables this mode and turns on the melody playback mode. But you cannot restore mixed mode - you will have to enter the menu again, which is very inconvenient.

Now we have reached the menu item with phone settings. Here you can adjust the screen contrast (from 1 to 14); There is no test scale - the contrast changes immediately. It is possible to set one of 5 pictures (2 animated), which will be displayed in standby mode on the phone screen.

You can also enable or disable network services, security settings, in particular phone code, PIN code verification, and more. In the Phone Settings submenu, you can edit the welcome message (in English), select the interface language, voice prompt language and SMS message input mode. It is possible to turn off the screen backlight or select its duration (short or long). What seemed interesting to me was the function of activating voice dialing or voice command by opening the flip; of course, you can also disable the flip by making it inactive. The settings for the WAP browser are also located here. You need to select Proxy settings (5.5.1), and in it - Proxy1 (default name). For MTS we do the following:

  • Proxy name - MTS
  • WDP address - 212.44.140.13
  • Port number - 9201
  • Home URL
  • Point of entry
    • Tel. NAS number - 0885
    • Name - mts
    • Password - empty
    • Network type - v.32 Transparent

That's all the necessary settings.

Sound quality, sensitivity, WAP

The sound is good, moreover, warm and, if I may say so, soft. The phone does not lose in this parameter to other business devices, such as Nokia 6210, but unlike the last one, the loudspeaker volume is not always enough. If we compare the N100 with the Siemens S35i, then this comparison will also be in favor of the Samsung phone, although the loudspeaker volume is also a weak point here.

The sensitivity of the device (subjectively) is average or slightly above average. In the city, he worked one hundred percent, there were practically no communication failures. Occasionally, there was an echo and a short-term loss of sound during a conversation. In general, the device is rather liked than disliked.

The phone book allows you to store up to 100 numbers (in addition to the SIM card). There is a search for the subscriber's name, the ability to assign a voice tag to any number (up to 20 in total). Setting up a personal call for the selected subscriber will allow you to determine who is calling by sound. Unfortunately, there is no Russian language support in the phone book.

WAP browser works flawlessly and, most importantly, correctly displays resources in Russian. Navigation is standard and does not cause any problems.

Other nice things

The phone has a wonderful alarm clock. It can be set to a specific hour, a specific day and hour, or even a weekly schedule. In the latter case, you select the desired days of the week from the list and set the call time. Everything is very simple. To wake up, you can choose one of the 5 presented melodies.

The calendar, connected to the to-do list, provides an alert feature.

  • Simple calculator.
  • World time.
  • Auto redial: the phone tries to reach the subscriber up to 10 times after a short period of time.
  • The software modem allows you to receive and transmit data at speeds up to 9600 bps.
  • Per-minute warning during a call.
  • Memorizing the number from the display in a notebook.

Disadvantages

The SGH-N100 and SGH2400 were created by the same Samsung engineering team, while the A100 phone was the brainchild of other developers, which has a positive impact on it. I regret to say that all the shortcomings inherent in the SGH2400 were successfully transferred to the Samsung SGH-N100. Next, I will list the main problems of the phone and in some places I will repeat what was said above, because these points seem important to me.

  • The standard 10 mAh lithium-ion battery (BTSN800G) lasts only about 2 days in standby mode with a small number of calls, which is extremely unpleasant. A thin 500 mAh battery most likely will not last more than a day. For a business device, two days of operation cannot be considered a satisfactory period. I think that in this case, the short battery life directly depends on incorrectly written software, which “thinks” too long to perform a standard operation. It is unlikely that the Samsung A100 has a more productive processor - it's just more correct software.
  • Call lists. In any list, a call from the same number or to the same number with a minute difference is identified as new and, accordingly, is entered with the time stamp. Thus, unsuccessful attempts to call a specific number within 10-15 minutes result in the list of calls made being filled with one number. This abnormal situation was also observed in the SGH2400.
  • The quick menu navigation for item 7.11 does not work, as you get to item 7.1. However, this is a minor drawback.
  • Switching to vibrate mode from the keyboard makes it impossible to automatically restore the mixed ringing mode.
  • When the ringing signal is turned off (silent mode), the phone gives various warning signals, for example, about a new message or the SMS message memory on the SIM card is full.
  • When the flip is closed, an incoming call can be answered by pressing the volume keys on the side of the phone. You cannot reject a call this way, which is quite funny, because it would be more rational to reject calls when the flip is closed, and start a conversation conveniently by opening the flip.
  • The busy signal is not always detected (a common problem with many cell phone models).
  • Voice commands and dialing are not always clearly recognizable, even in moderate noise environments.
  • The answering machine begins to speak a welcome message when the caller has not yet heard it - as a result, the first word is cut off. I advise you to pause for a second before recording a message.
  • Screensaver pictures cannot be viewed before installation: to see the picture, you need to install it!!! When receiving broadcast messages, the picture will not be displayed on the screen; these modes are incompatible.
  • When recharging the phone while it is on, the display backlight turns on spontaneously when a message is received from the base station.
  • It is inconvenient to work with the phone with one hand due to its narrowness.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Samsung 8Gb DDR4 chips and 32GB DDR4 modules 23.10.2014

Samsung Electronics has announced the start of mass production of 4Gb DDR8 chips using 20nm technology. The new memory chips enable the creation of 32 GB modules, whose production has already begun. In the future, Samsung will be able to create server modules with a capacity of 128 GB.

Samsung's new 8Gb DDR4 memory chips are certified to operate at frequencies up to 2400MHz with a supply voltage of 1,2V, the lowest in the industry. While the 8Gb memory chips will not operate at the ultra-high frequencies of the 4Gb variants, they will allow for larger modules, which is important for powerful next-generation servers based on multi-core Intel Xeon E5 v3 "Haswell-EP" processors.

Samsung has already begun production of 32 GB server RDIMMs based on the new memory chips. These modules will operate at frequencies up to 2400 MHz, which is 29% faster than DDR3 RDIMM modules for servers of the same size that operate at 1866 MHz.

Going forward, Samsung plans to create multilayer memory chips using 8Gb chips and TSV (through silicon via) connections. The chip, which will include four 8-Gb chips, will have a capacity of 32 Gb, which will make it possible to create memory modules up to 128 GB.

Samsung is the first PC memory maker to produce 4Gb DDR8 chips using 20nm technology. This approach will reduce the size of the chips and, consequently, their cost. It's unlikely that 8Gb chips will become popular in the PC market anytime soon, but servers and some workstations will use modules based on them.
