SAMSUNG SGH-A400. Mobile phone review
Review
The question of which mobile phone model should be considered female and which male has been asked for a long time. However, no one has yet been able to obtain an exact answer to this question due to the lack of objective criteria for comparison. In most cases, the determining role was played by external characteristics - weight, size, design, ergonomics, but in terms of the set of functions the phones were comparable. Samsung has released the first phone model exclusively for ladies. So what is so feminine about her? Features of a "female" phone First, of course, design. Neat and elegant, the A400 is a small flip phone with a rectangular, slightly rounded shape (which, by the way, is not very typical for Samsung) with a small silver rosette in the lower corner of the front panel. At first glance, the A400 body somewhat resembles a powder compact from Lancome. The size of the device is also quite feminine - 70x48.5x19.9 mm. It fits so well in your hand that it is almost invisible; in your purse, therefore, it also does not take up much space. The phone weighs only about 80g, which, you see, is not much. The phone body is made of high quality plastic. To prevent the panels from scratching against each other when folded, one of them has two small rubber guards. However, they are not attached very securely and can fly out if the movement is unsuccessful. The body colors: red, black, white and metallic blue complement the set of “feminine” qualities of the A400. And one more small detail that is worth mentioning: the phone (without battery) was originally packaged in a beautiful leather case - a wonderful gift! Previously, in discussions on the topic “Who is this phone best suited for?” One could put an end to this place, but that was before... Scrolling through the main menu of the phone, you will notice one unconventional submenu, indicated by an icon of a blooming and closing rose. It is called “Life” and has two sub-items: Games (there are seven of them and which will surprise no one now), and Health. The latter, in turn, has 4 sub-items with very unusual names for a mobile phone: Biorhythm, Excess weight, Calories and Biocycle. By the way, it is the last subparagraph that makes the phone 100% female, since men are unlikely to ever need to calculate the probability of pregnancy or the day when the next “critical days” will occur. Let's consider these subparagraphs in more detail. Menu item Health The first of them is Biorhythm. Here you can get information about your physical, emotional and mental potential. To do this, in the Settings item you need to enter your date of birth and select the day for which the calculation is made. The results are displayed in the form of a chart indicating the exact value from -100 to 100. The name of the second sub-item speaks for itself - Overweight. The weight calculation scheme has been greatly simplified. When calculating, only the gender and height of a person are taken into account, and parameters such as age, participation in professional sports and many others are not taken into account. One of my friends, an overweight (but nothing more than that) woman, having found out that she was 24 kg overweight, said that this was a “phone for thin people.” The calculations turn out to be very strange, even if we consider this scheme to be correct. So, for example, with a height of 178 cm and a weight of 70 kg, excess weight is 5 kg, and with the same height and weight of 65 kg, we are already talking about a weight deficit of 2 kg. Thus, if you are consistent, you first need to lose 5 kg of weight, and then gain 2 kg. Having reported excess weight, the phone automatically issues a conclusion about your build. There are five gradations in total: thin, thin, normal, overweight and obese. “Normal” are considered all people whose weight differs from the norm by no more than 10 kg. The next sub-item, Calories, allows you to approximately calculate the number of calories consumed by a person during one day. This takes into account quite a lot of parameters, for example, housework (cooking, cleaning, washing dishes), gardening, taking a bath, reading, playing sports (swimming, tennis, aerobics, dancing, etc.) and even talking on the phone. However, how many calories are spent when working at a computer (a very relevant activity today), we will never find out from this subsection. The last sub-item of the Health submenu is Biocycle. By entering the start date of the last biological cycle and its average duration, you can calculate the day of ovulation and the estimated day of the next menstruation, and also, based on these data, obtain information about the probability of pregnancy on any of the days you specified. It should be noted right away that this calculation system works correctly only during one cycle. So, for example, if on August 28, 2001. enter the start date of the last cycle, say May 28, 2001, and the average period is 30 days, then the probability that on August 28 (three months later) you are pregnant will be only 10%, not 90 or 110%, and the start date of the next cycle will be anyway September 25, 2001 You can make all these calculations not only for yourself, but also for your girlfriend, and even a friend. The word "friend" in the menu is certainly a lack of Russification. In general, it was carried out very successfully, but this incident is an obvious flaw. There is no such error in the menu for German-speaking users, although gender divisions exist in both German and Russian. The phone itself does not support the Russian language, i.e. You must edit the welcome message, make notes in the phone book and write SMS messages in Latin. Other functions With its parameters, this phone is in many ways reminiscent of its predecessor - the Samsung A-300. The same system for organizing the menu and phone book, containing the same 100 numbers in addition to the SIM card memory. In the A-400, as in the A-300, you can choose one of 48 melodies, which in my opinion are quite pleasant, or record 2 of your own; set one of 10 tones for incoming SMS messages (according to the group of subscribers), view the lists of 10 received, 10 missed and 10 made calls. However, despite the fact that the A-400 is a fairly high-end device, it does not have voice dialing or a voice recorder. True, the existing infrared port makes it possible to synchronize the organizer with a PC using the EasyGSM program from Samsung; There is also a built-in modem (speed 14400 bps) and WAP browser version 1.1. Additional features that make using the phone more enjoyable are also very similar to those of the A-300. Therefore, I will limit myself to just listing them. So:
Display and battery The display of the A400 is graphic, high-contrast, with a resolution of 128x96 pixels. It is slightly smaller than the A-300 screen and allows you to display only 4 lines of text of 18 characters each. The backlight of the screen is emerald, very pleasant. One of the six available screensavers can be used as a screen saver. All the pictures are cute in their own way, but the images of a kitten trying to catch a butterfly and a panda wandering in an unknown direction seem especially funny. To be fair, it is worth noting that the first and last screensavers that appear when you turn on and off the phone, respectively, are also very pleasant. This is again an image of a rose opening and closing. As you may have noticed, the image of this flower is an integral part of the design of the device. The headset included in the standard package was no exception. It itself is made to match the color of the phone, and the earphone is shaped like a small rose - it looks very stylish and beautiful. The battery, which is also included as standard, is a 650 mAh lithium-ion battery. According to official data, a phone with such a battery should last 3.5 hours in talk mode and about 90 hours in standby mode. In real life, with 15-20 minutes of calls per day, the phone works normally without recharging for about three days. During charging, which lasts about an hour and a half, a charge indicator appears on the screen, displaying the charging percentage with an accuracy of 5% (when the phone is turned off). The most important thing You can, of course, praise the additional capabilities of the device for a long time, but the most important function of the phone is still providing communication. This device copes well with this task, although not perfectly. Subjectively, the communication quality of the A-400 is slightly worse than, for example, that of the Nokia 8210, a phone of the same class. The sensitivity of the device is also not at the highest level. In places with poor reception, the device often does not pick up the network, and there are often cases when the connection is interrupted. Total ... Samsung A-400 is the first "women's" phone. During its development, many little details were thought out that will surely appeal to many representatives of the fair sex. It should be noted right away that the phone is intended, of course, for wealthy women or wives of wealthy husbands. After all, the average expected price of the device is about $400. Is it worth that kind of money or not, it's up to you to decide. In any case, the Samsung A-400 is not just a phone that you can talk on, but a device that has a lot of additional capabilities. Among its various functions, there are those that will most likely be of interest only to women, for example, calculating the biocycle and excess weight (personally, I found this idea quite interesting). Of course, I would like that for such a price the quality of communication was excellent, and there were such functions as voice dialing and a voice recorder, but, nevertheless, the A400 leaves a very good impression. Overall, I enjoyed testing this device. I hope that the shortcomings that exist today will be corrected in new versions of the software. Editor's word It’s quite difficult to write about an exclusively female phone for a man, but I still want to add a few words. The A400 kit will include a headset made in the same color scheme as the phone body. It is not yet known which model of the headset will be supplied to our country, which is why we are not providing a photo of it. Experience shows that prototype phones from Samsung almost always have mediocre sensitivity, as was mentioned in the review, while commercial products in this parameter usually differ from prototypes for the better. I think that this model will not be an exception, because it is similar to the A300. The last thing I would like to note. Despite the high price, this phone will find many fans immediately after its release and will become one of Samsung's best-selling devices. The A400 is capable of filling the vacuum in the sector of expensive, fashion models (after all, at the moment there are not just enough of them - they are absent).
