SAMSUNG SGH-A100. Mobile phone review Review Samsung SGH-A100 (hereinafter referred to as A100) belongs to the class of so-called "image" devices and completes the line of GSM cell phones from Samsung. The SGH-A110 model is not taken into account, which is a complete technical analogue of the A100 and differs only in the presence of a WAP browser version 1.1. This phone initially pleases with the fact that in addition to the standard package (charger, instructions in Russian and English, the phone itself, a headset and a battery), it comes with a thin additional battery, as well as a velvet black box for storing the phone and a strap for carrying the phone on your hand . The first impression when you open the box and see the black case is that inside is not a phone, but some kind of jewel. Opening the case, in the center on a white background you see a silver phone. Looks very impressive. In total, two body colors are available for this model - gold and silver. The dimensions of the phone (80x42x22.9 mm) allow it to easily lie in the palm of your hand, and its weight with a thin battery of 87 grams does not create a feeling of fatigue during a long conversation. The phone belongs to the class of so-called "clamshells", Motorola v3688, v3690 can be analogues. When closed, the display and the speaker are pressed against the keyboard, and when the phone is opened, they form an angle of 30 degrees, so the shape of the phone partially follows the contours of the face and the microphone is close enough to the speaker's mouth. Unfortunately, it is difficult to open the phone with one hand, despite the large protrusions on the side. The spring is very tight and pops when closing. I will not write any more about how well the phone case is technically made. Everything that has been written about the younger models from Samsung - SGH2200 and SGH2400, tested in our laboratory - is quite applicable to this device. Connecting… The first step was to remove the battery from the phone in order to insert a SIM card for testing. The latch moves up and the battery literally jumps out of the socket. This is due to the fact that the phone has a light thin battery, and the contacts on the phone body are springy; with a standard battery (heavier) this does not happen, which is a pity. In order not to get the impression of the fragility of the structure, I hasten to add the following. In the latched position, the batteries sit very firmly in the socket and contact loss is almost impossible. The SIM card holder is standard for Samsung phones and consists of plastic holders and a latch on a spring. Convenient and secure. So, the card is inserted and you can turn on the phone, having previously replaced the battery. When you turn it on, a screensaver with the inscription GSM appears, the phone plays a tone and then registration in the network goes on. Later, you can edit the welcome line to your liking (only in English). After successful registration, the display shows a line of icons, in which there is a signal level (6 bars), battery level (3 bars). When you receive an SMS message, set an alarm or vibrate a call, the corresponding icon will be shown in the icon bar. In addition to the line of icons, the display shows the name of the mobile operator company, date and time. At the bottom of the screen there are inscriptions for soft keys for quick access to the menu (Menu) and the phone book (Name). The display itself is a graphic display with a resolution of 128x64 pixels, which allows displaying up to 4 lines of text. When displaying text, the font size can dynamically change from large to medium to small. At night, pleasant emerald illumination does not tire the eyes even during prolonged use (for example, playing snake). The animation can be viewed when the phone is turned off. The screensaver plays and the phone says goodbye to you, after which it turns off. The final touches Before I could actually make and receive calls with the A100, I needed to set the ring tone. There are 18 melodies in total, from which you can choose any. It is also possible to dial your own melody (up to 2 of your own melodies) from the phone keypad. The process itself did not cause problems and is well described in the instructions. In the menu dedicated to sound signals, you can also select the type of warning, namely, it will be only a melody or a melody with a vibrating alert, or maybe only a vibrating alert. The last option is a warning light. In the same menu, you can set the conversation timer. It will alert you every minute from the start of a call with a beep. In this regard, the A100 outperforms the Nokia 8210, as there are no timers in the Nokia device. Mention should be made of the hierarchical menu through which all the functions described above were connected. By pressing the left soft key, we get to the main menu. There are 8 points in total (from 1 to 8) and each has its own animated icon, which looks very nice. The numerical sequence for the menu is indicated in the lower left corner. Each menu sub-item has its own number and, thus, a digital sequence is obtained for any menu item. For example, Sound Options (3), then Ringer Volume (3.3), so the last item has the number 3 in the third menu. This sequence can be used in menu mode for quick access to items, just type numbers on the keyboard and you will be taken to the desired item. You can navigate through the menu not only with the right soft key and the "C" button, but also with the volume keys located on the side of the phone. This method is even more convenient, as it allows you to move through the menu and back. When using the right soft key, moving through the menu is only possible cyclically forward, and if you accidentally miss the desired item, you will have to scroll through the menu again. The arrow keys below the display are also used to navigate the menu in all directions. Outside of menu mode, any menu item can be mapped to these keys. Accordingly, pressing one of the keys will immediately call the menu item. The up key turns on/off the vibrating alert by default. When the mixed ring type is set (melody + vibrating alert), this function is useless. Communication quality and other things The phone easily fit into a jeans pocket, and during testing it was worn in a shirt pocket, in the side pocket of a jacket. Everywhere he did not cause inconvenience. Below is a subjective opinion about the sensitivity of this device. For all the time of using the phone, there were no failures in communication. The sound is pleasant and the words are clearly distinguishable. It seems that the interlocutor is somewhere nearby and you can touch him just by stretching out your hand. The volume of the speaker sometimes even seemed excessive, and I set it to 4 divisions (5 in total). On the other end I was also heard distinctly and clearly. There are no complaints about the quality of communication. I had long and painful thoughts about how to characterize the sensitivity of this device, and in the end, I would venture to suggest that the A100 is comparable to the Nokia 8210 in terms of sensitivity, but loses a little in the quality of speech sound. A standard battery (Li-Ion 750 mAh) allows you to talk on the phone up to 205 minutes, and work in standby mode up to 70 hours. A thin battery (Li-Ion 450 mAh) lasts for less time and can really only be used for one day. With a standard battery, the weight of the phone increases, but at the same time, you can safely use the phone for up to 3 days with a large number of calls (up to 20 minutes a day). Using the vibrating alert reduces battery life accordingly in both cases. A very nice feature of this model is that when charging the switched off phone, a detailed indicator appears on the screen. The indicator shows the battery and the percentage shows how much is left until the end of charging. On average, a full battery charge (standard) takes about 1.5 hours. I would like to dwell on the vibrating alert in more detail. Unfortunately, the A100 has a rather weak vibration alert. It is felt in the front pocket of jeans, but in the side pocket of a jacket when walking, it is practically not felt. And now a few words about the phone book. In addition to the memory of the SIM card, the memory of the phone itself can be used, which allows storing up to 99 numbers with names. Entries from the SIM card can be copied to the phone's memory. The phone book has a search function. In addition to the phone book, there is a list of missed and received calls. Phones from these lists can be stored in the phone book. All sorts of amenities The phone has a very nice alarm clock. It can be set to a specific time, a specific day and time, and even a weekly schedule. In the latter case, you select the desired days of the week from the list and set the call time. Everything is very simple. A list of tasks linked to a specific day in the calendar. Calendar. Calculator. Working with SMS messages is quite simple and you can create up to 5 SMS message templates. Display contrast setting. Auto redial to the number you specified, the phone tries up to 10 times to reach the subscriber after a short interval. Software modem that allows you to receive and transmit data at speeds up to 14400 bps. Per-minute warning during a call. Memorizing the number from the display in the notebook. IR port for connecting to a PC. The phone can be used as a modem, installation in Windows 98 and 2000 does not require additional drivers. The set includes 7 games. Card games, in my opinion, are not very interesting, but the snake is worth playing. Several difficulty levels, the game is addictive. The only annoyance is that you have to get used to the default buttons, and they are located inconveniently for the game. Conclusion The undoubted advantage is the presence of a second battery and a telephone headset in the package. As it was said at the beginning, the device is mostly "image" and this explains the absence of such functions as voice dialing and a voice recorder. The quality of the device is at its best and it will serve the owner faithfully for a long time. Such an opinion is gradually formed when using the device from day to day. Durable body coating, large keys that are comfortable to press. The difference between this phone and other models lies in the thoughtfulness of everything - down to the smallest detail. The disadvantages include the lack of software for synchronizing the phone book with a PC and the simple writing of SMS messages. Let's hope that such software will appear in the near future. The lack of WAP support is rather ephemeral, since with the right firmware it will not be difficult to turn A100 into A110. Finally, I would like to note that the A100 in a black case looks simply irresistible as a gift. I think that if the price does not seem excessive to you, then your gift will be remembered for a very long time. Author: Eldar Murtazin See other articles Section Mobile Legends.
