SAMSUNG SGH-2400 DUAL BAND. Mobile phone overview
Review
In the box with the phone, we found not only a well-made instruction in the form of a small book, but also the phone itself, the battery for it, a charger and a telephone headset. The presence of a headset in the kit is quite remarkable, since Samsung includes a telephone headset in the delivery package of all cell phone models. No tiresome running around and searching. From a financial point of view, you also benefit, as you will be spared from spending extra money (headsets for various phones cost from $3 to $50). The battery supplied with the phone is 750 mAh lithium-ion, which is quite nice, since many manufacturers of devices of this class still complete phones with nickel-metal hydride batteries. With this battery, the phone can work up to 76 hours of standby time and up to 360 minutes of talk time. Charging with the supplied device takes just over 1.5 hours. With intensive use of the phone (without turning it off at night), one battery charge is enough for 2-3 days. One of the features of the battery is that the charging contacts in the desktop charger are located on the back of the battery, which also serves as the back of the phone. To use the charger that came with your phone, simply insert the plug into the phone's jack. In addition to the fact that this procedure is described in great detail in the instructions (it is impossible to make a mistake), the developers have also provided additional protection against incorrect connection. The plug and socket on the phone are designed so that it is not possible to connect the charger incorrectly. To disconnect the charger plug, you need to press two buttons located on its side surfaces. The charger also has an automatic voltage selection function (from 100 to 240 V), which allows you to travel with your phone without much trouble. So, we insert the SIM card into the holder, which is made of plastic, but at the same time it fixes the card very securely. Turn on the phone A keyboard cover or just a flip covers all the buttons. This model has an active cover, i.e. when calling, opening the flip is an automatic answer to the call. You can refuse a conversation using the buttons located on the side of the phone. Then you don't have to open the lid. A very pleasant find was that the opening of the flip is possible with the fingers of one hand. Such an operation does not cause difficulties due to the protrusions located on both sides of the cover. The author, for example, exclusively used one hand when answering calls. Based on the size of the phone, it is very simple (108x45x19 mm). And the weight of the device is less than 100 grams. The lid is very strong, and in order to break it you need to apply a lot of force (if you do not break it on purpose). But I digress a little. When turned on, the phone shows an animated screensaver and beeps pleasantly. On the screen saver, the globe is spinning, smoothly turning into the Samsung logo. Next, a welcome inscription appears, which you can edit for yourself. By default, the inscription looks like "Samsung SGH-2400 GSM Dualband". Unfortunately, you can only edit or create a greeting in English. Immediately there was a desire to see what the phone would show when it was turned off. The splash screen was also nice, showing the phone closing the keyboard cover. Then the phone wrote Bye-Bye and turned off safely. I had to turn it back on. The display immediately shows information about the battery charge (3 divisions), signal strength (5 divisions), the name of the mobile operator, as well as time and date. The bottom of the display shows the current call mode. You need to dwell on the display in more detail, since this model has a special one. The display is made using the latest polymer technology (similar to the display in Ericsson T28s), which provides soft and even emerald illumination and high definition of the inscriptions. At the top of the display is a line of indicators. Up to 4 lines of text can be displayed on the remaining area. In this case, the phone itself changes the font size depending on the amount of information. As usual, the first thing I did was go to the menu to set the ring type. In total, you can choose from 17 ring types, which are called type1, type2, and so on. You cannot record your own melody, and the presented melodies are very ascetic. All tones are very high. You can also set the type of sound when a key is pressed. I completely forgot to note that there are three options for calling - a regular call, a vibrating alert and a mixed one (melody + vibrating alert), I chose the latter. When the keyboard cover is closed, you can quickly switch between regular and vibrating alerts by pressing and holding the top button on the side of the phone. The disadvantage is that if you had a mixed call, you will again have to get into the menu to set it. Menu The hierarchical menu is well thought out. You can use the right key below the screen to navigate through the menu, but then you only move forward through the menu (cycle). You can use the keys on the side of your phone to navigate in both directions. The selection of menu items is carried out using the left key located under the screen (so-called soft key). The transition to the upper level is carried out with the C key. The user has the opportunity, while in the menu, to immediately select the desired item by typing a numeric sequence for quick access. For frequently used items, this shortcut sequence is remembered very quickly. Separately, it is necessary to note the good Russification of all menu items. I never needed to refer to the instructions when viewing menu items, since all translations are correct and understandable. Roadside check The next day, I threw the phone in my bag and went to town on business. I took with me the headset that came with the phone. From myself, I just want to note that the headset jack is neatly covered with a rubber cap. This cap is attached to the case, which allows you not to lose it when the headset is connected. Practical and comfortable. The antenna of the SGH2400 is external and at the same time it also extends. The sensitivity of the device is average or perhaps slightly above average. For all the time of using the phone, there were no complaints about the sound quality at all. There have never been such effects as an echo, and the slight hiss of the speaker during a conversation, apparently, was done on purpose, similar to the same solution in the Nokia 8210. With an "ideal" signal (if neither you nor your interlocutor say anything, but this happens often - every time you take a breath to continue talking) and the overall level of ambient speaking noise is negligible (the phone's narrowly focused microphone does not perceive it) - there will be absolute silence in the handset, which will create a feeling of loss of communication. The phone provides good communication, there were no complaints. In areas with poor reception, the phone showed itself very well, there was no deterioration in the quality of communication. The phone supports EFR codec. Mute the microphone during a call also turned out to be a convenient function, but, unfortunately, to activate the function, I had to climb into the menu. The SGH2400 presents a large set of features that make it comfortable to use the phone. If you missed a call, an inscription appears on the screen informing you about the number of missed calls, their time and the number of the caller (if you have activated the caller ID service). Navigating the list is very easy. In general, the phone has lists of the last dialed numbers, missed and received calls. Any number can be saved from each list. You can assign up to 9 numbers for speed dialing. It is possible to voice dial up to 20 numbers from the phone book. I would like to dwell on this function in more detail. To record a voice tag for a specific number, you need to select it from the phone book and then select the record item from the menu. You will be asked in English to repeat the word for this number (the word may be in Russian), after which this number will be dialed in the future. However, you can turn off the sound prompt or switch to one of the 9 presented European languages, but Russian is not among them. The phone is very sensitive to intonation, and if you pronounce a word differently, it will not be recorded. After you add at least one voice tag, opening the flip will activate voice dialing. From the phone book, you can access the list of voice tags, listen to them, edit or delete them. It should be noted that, unfortunately, in the presence of external noise, voice dialing did not work well. The words were not recognized and had to be repeated to the point of stupefaction. On the Samsung website, in the description of this phone, the voice dialing function is not indicated (at the time of writing the review). It also does not indicate that the phone has a voice recorder that allows you to record short voice messages. A total of 3 messages up to 35 seconds each can be recorded. And now a few words about the phone book. In addition to the memory of the SIM card, the memory of the phone itself can be used, which allows storing up to 99 numbers with names. Entries from the SIM card can be copied to the phone's memory. The phone book has a search function. Other amenities The phone has a very nice alarm clock. It can be set to a specific time, a specific day and time, and even a weekly schedule. In the latter case, you select the desired days of the week from the list and set the call time. Everything is very simple. Working with SMS messages is quite simple and you can create up to 5 SMS message templates. World time. Auto redial to the number you specified, the phone tries up to 10 times to reach the subscriber after a short interval. Software modem that allows you to receive and transmit data at speeds up to 9600 bps. Per-minute warning during a call. Memorizing the number from the display in the notebook. Overall Impression This phone is a good choice for everyone who is willing to pay this money for a solid and high-quality model. The quality factor lies not only in the fact that the whole design is thought out and comfortable in everyday use, but also in the materials used to create the SGH2400. For example, the material of the case is practically not scratched (he carried the keys in his pocket), and deep scratches are not noticeable and do not spread, as on some other models. This suggests that the plastic is not just painted, but has a large and durable top coat of paint. There were no communication shortcomings. The parameter is subjective, but even more expensive models from other manufacturers have a lot to learn from the SGH2400. The main drawback is the poorly implemented voice dialing feature. The disadvantages include the impossibility of recording a conversation in the voice recorder, you can record voice reminders only in standby mode. The design of the model is on top and will appeal to many. Light weight (less than 100 grams) makes it possible to carry the phone even in a shirt pocket.
