NOKIA 9210

The communicator and everything that comes with it are placed in two boxes, united by paper wrapping.

One of the boxes contains a Concord Q Eye digital camera, which allows you to take pictures with a resolution of 640x480 pixels. You can store up to 12 photos in the built-in memory. It is also possible to use an MMS card, for which an expansion slot is provided. The camera is powered by two AA batteries; According to the manufacturer, they should be enough for 200 shots. In appearance, the camera resembles similar devices from the thirties, although made in Germany.

In the photographs below you will see a flash, a tripod mount, and an infrared port, with which photos are transferred to other devices, in particular to the communicator. Control is reduced to a minimum: you can set the shooting mode, shooting with flash, turn on the infrared port to transfer a photo, or delete an individual photo. Confirmation of any of the operations occurs as a result of clicking on the OK button, and the snapshot itself is taken in exactly the same way. The LCD display shows the battery charge level. The package includes a black neoprene case with a mount that allows you to carry the camera on your belt.

I will say right away that if this camera is useful on the farm, it will only be as a toy for children. The quality of the photographs obtained with its help does not stand up to criticism and does not allow the photographs to be used even as small pictures in the communicator's notebook. However, judge for yourself, here is an example of a not-so-bad photo taken with the Concord Q Eye.

However, the camera is just an accessory, and its shortcomings should not affect the evaluation of the communicator as a device. The 9210 provides ample opportunities for working with photographs, so using a good digital camera is not excluded, but more on that later.

The second box contains the communicator itself, as well as instructions, an interface cable for connecting to a PC COM port, a battery and a disk with software for the 9210.

The instructions are packaged like a gift box of chocolates and look very nice.

The disk contains a synchronization program, PC Suite, which allows you to archive data from the 9210 on a computer. Using this software, you can also transfer files from your PC to your device and back, and there is an option for installing new programs. Installation on a PC does not cause problems; after it is completed, the Nokia 9210 Communicator icon appears on the desktop, clicking on which takes you to browse directories on the 9210. Of course, for this, the communicator must be connected to the PC. Through the mentioned icon you get access to all folders of the 9210 and can both delete files and copy them to any of the folders. A file containing Cyrillic characters in its name or in its path cannot be copied. The program writes that the file is currently in use and offers to close it. So, if you have a Russian version of Windows, you won’t be able to copy a single file from your desktop. The reverse procedure (copying to the desktop), oddly enough, is possible.

The copying speed is limited by the speed of the port and leaves much to be desired. So, backing up about 20 megabytes of programs and information takes about 30-40 minutes. I would like the Nokia 9210 to come with at least a USB cable, but, alas, this is a pipe dream. Another trouble was the loss of data from the first synchronization. Maybe the operating system, which was unstable, was to blame for this, but the fact remains: I had to reboot and start all over again, although there were no visible reasons for data loss and the computer was turned off in the usual way (not by pulling the plug from the socket, believe me ). After a backup, you can restore both all information and individual files.

In addition to backing up information, synchronization of the to-do list from the 9210 organizer, email programs, and the contact list is available. In all cases, when synchronizing, Microsoft products installed on a PC are preferred; however, Lotus Notes and Lotus Organizer are also supported.

In the PC Suite control panel you can get information about the device, see where data is stored, etc. There's nothing particularly useful here except for the Conversion Settings item, which allows you to configure the relationship of files from the 9210's built-in text editor and spreadsheets with those on the PC. Those. You can map RTF files downloaded from your PC to Word on your device. The default is Microsoft Word.

Design, case, battery

With dimensions of 158 x 56 x 27 mm, this smartphone cannot be called miniature. However, the 9210 largely repeats its predecessor, the 9110 communicator, including in size; in any case, they are very similar in appearance. The weight also cannot be called small - as much as 244 grams. This can only be explained by the fact that the communicator is not worn on oneself, but is placed in a briefcase or bag. It is difficult to put a device of this size in your pocket.

At the bottom end of the communicator there is an interface connector, a power plug, and an infrared port. In the upper part there is a folding antenna: it extends out of the groove and can just as easily be put into it.

On the back surface of the 9210 you can see a compartment for an MMS card (a standard card included in the kit is 16 MB), and the battery is located above it.

The battery is securely fixed and has no play. There is a speaker above it, and a microphone at the bottom of the case. The communicator can be used like a regular phone; its only feature is the location of the keys and screen: they are located on the opposite side of the speaker and microphone. This was apparently done for ease of use of the external screen, since if it were lower, problems would arise when reading or entering text.

The battery is 9210 lithium-ion with a capacity of 1300 mAh, a voltage of 3.7 V. The time to fully charge the battery is about 2.5-3 hours. Talk time is from 4 to 10 hours, standby time is from 80 to 230 hours (according to the manufacturer). In reality, the communicator can work for about 4 days with 20 (approximately) minutes of calls per day using a speakerphone or about 1.5-2 hours as a PDA. These are very good figures, especially considering that the internal color active TFT display displays up to 4096 colors with a resolution of 640x200 pixels. And this is with a working display backlight!!! Thus, this smartphone is first in its class in terms of battery life.

Working in phone mode

The communicator can be used as a regular telephone (hereinafter referred to as telephone mode). When unfolded, it is a full-fledged PDA with a color display, an advanced organizer, programs for viewing videos, graphics, a voice recorder and many other functions. The communicator is equipped with a speakerphone and can be used as a telephone. In the future we will call this mode PDA mode, although it contains phone functions.

The communicator operating in telephone mode resembles in its functions a regular business device from Nokia, in particular the Nokia 6210. The external display is slightly smaller than on the 6210, the signal level and battery charge indicators have only 4 bars. By the way, in PDA mode these indicators are also four-level. The external display displays information about the cellular operator, time, and the name of the activated profile.

By the way, one more profile has been added to the already familiar profiles - Flight. It turns off the phone, allowing only the PDA to be used. This is done to ensure greater safety in airplanes. To activate profiles, a separate key has appeared, located on the left above the keyboard.

The numeric keypad is made of rubber and is pleasant to work with.

The display, like the keyboard, has a blue backlight. The menu organization is standard; short digital sequences are provided to access sub-items of the menu, which consists of only 5 items: Messages, Calls (call lists, cost, duration, etc.), Settings (security, clock, greeting, auto-dial, speed dial, etc.), Call transfer and infrared port. As you can see, the menu is not rich, but for working only with the phone it is quite convenient.

You can dial a number and make a call only in phone mode (when the communicator is closed). To talk, you will have to turn the phone with the display away from you. The sound quality and volume are decent, no different from the corresponding parameters of the Nokia 6210. You can turn off the phone by pressing the power key located on the right above the numeric keypad (while the PDA continues to work).

The address book is available in phone mode, both from the SIM card and from the communicator's memory. All functions of the Nokia 6210 phone book are present.

The last thing to say about the phone mode in the 9210 is that all changes made in this mode are also visible in PDA mode. That is, both modes are combined and represent a single whole.

PDA operating mode

So, open the communicator. The first thing that catches your eye is that the screen backlight is too bright, in my opinion (later I’ll tell you how to set this parameter). The communicator asks you to indicate the city in order to set the exact time. You can immediately enter the user’s personal data, but you don’t have to do this.

Having filled in or not filled in the appropriate fields, we find ourselves in the first menu of the PDA - Desk, which plays the role of a desktop in the communicator, on which you can place shortcuts to programs or files (small notes - reminders - are also created here). By the way, it is possible to change the desktop wallpaper.

Let's take a closer look at the communicator interface. In all cases, the main window is divided into three parts. On the left there is an information area, here, in particular, there are icons for signal level and battery charge, a clock, as well as an icon for the selected section. When you start programs, the information area disappears; more precisely, a small gray strip with signal level and battery charge indicators remains on the screen.

In the center there is a work area, this is where icons of various programs, small reminders, etc. are displayed. The area on the right is used to display labels for the four keys on the side of the screen. The menu on the right also changes depending on the application. Let me note right away that pressing these keys is not very convenient.

Navigation through menus and between applications, as well as typing, is carried out using the QWERTY keyboard. The top row of keys is used to access sections of the communicator; below is the main sign-numeric keyboard. To move between icons and menu items, use the navigation key located at the bottom right. Above it is the Enter key, next to it is the Menu key, designed to access the regular menu (example in the photo). Each section has its own menu, but the profiles item is present everywhere. It’s convenient when you can change the current profile at any time, not only in phone mode, but also in PDA mode.

When you click on the icon with the image of a piece of blue paper, a list of all tasks simultaneously performed by the PDA is displayed - you can select the desired task or complete it.

The last thing worth mentioning before going into the main sections is scaling. From the menu or from the keyboard you can change the size of the font and icons on the screen. Here is an example of scaling the Desk section: the photo shows two extreme values, there is also an intermediate one.

Telephone Directory Section

This section is called by the Tel key. All functions for working with the communicator as a telephone are collected here. The work area displays phone numbers both from the communicator's memory and from the SIM card's memory. If you type the first letters of a name in the lowest window, it will be highlighted in the general list (a kind of quick search). You can enter a phone number and click the corresponding button to make a call.

When making a call in PDA mode, the speakerphone installed in the communicator itself is used. The speaker volume is enough to carry on a conversation in relatively quiet conditions - this will be difficult in noisy places. During a call, of course, you can adjust the speaker volume.

It is also possible to record the conversation (in whole or in part) on a voice recorder. This is done using a short sequence of CTRL+R or by selecting the appropriate menu item. The disadvantage of implementing this function, in my opinion, is the impossibility of instantly turning on the voice recorder to record an already started conversation: it takes some time to launch the Recorder application, and after loading it you still need to select Record in the menu (this item is not activated by default). Otherwise the recorder is very good. The total recording time is limited only by the memory size in the communicator or on the MMS card; in the standard package this time is a little more than 10 minutes. Two compression formats are supported.

This section also contains lists of the latest outgoing, incoming and missed calls.

But if mobile users are already accustomed to such lists, then the Log file is really something new. As the name suggests, this file records all calls made from the communicator, indicating their time and date, type (incoming or outgoing), and duration of the conversation. You can switch modes so that instead of the date and time, the subject (relevant for all types of messages) and status (sent, not sent, awaiting sending) are displayed.

You can use filters to navigate through the log file. Depending on the selected settings, different types of calls will be displayed on the screen: voice calls, data calls, short messages, faxes, messages of all types. Directional filters are provided that are superimposed on an already applied filter. Thus, it is possible to make complex samples and print them on a printer.

Messaging section

It contains all the functions necessary for writing short messages, emails and faxes. All incoming messages end up here, and upon receiving the message, the communicator warns the user about this by showing the header along with the sender's number in a pop-up window.

On the left are the Inbox, Outbox, Sent and Drafts folders. On the right are the message headers, the numbers from which they were received, or email addresses, and the first lines of the messages. To view the selected message, you need to press the OK key, and a menu appears on the right that allows you to reply to the message, forward it, or delete it. All other actions are available through the regular menu.

Working with SMS messages with a keyboard is very pleasant, and writing a long message is not difficult. As already mentioned, there is no support for the Russian language, and you won’t be able to send a message in Russian unless you first copy it from your PC to the Word application, but more on that later. However, messages in Russian can be received, although the text will not be visible during preview.

The only drawback I noticed in working with SMS is related to the peculiarities of the work of Moscow GSM operators. The communicator does not have a character counter, and you can easily exceed the 160 character limit for a short message in English. In this case, the communicator will offer to send several messages, automatically breaking them up. If the operator supports the linked short message service, there will be no problem. It is with regret that I have to admit that this useful function does not work in Moscow - the communicator constantly writes about an error when sending. Perhaps this defect will be eliminated in the near future, but for now the problem remains. The undoubted advantage of working with SMS is the ability to send a message not to one recipient, but to several (you just need to remember that each message is paid separately).

In order to use e-mail, you need to configure your Internet connection once and also specify your mailbox settings. Let me remind you that the email client supports POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP protocols. Attachments of all types supported by the communicator can be sent and received.

Internet section

In this section you will find an Internet browser and wap browser version 1.1. As far as I know, there are no plans to update the wap browser to version 1.2 in the near future, which is sad, since it eliminates all possibilities for using the communicator in e-commerce using wap resources. The WWW browser supports SSL (HTML 3.2) as well as JavaScript (but not Java).

In principle, the browser’s capabilities will be sufficient to work with English-language www, but even here, not everything is as smooth as we would like. Sites that use styles display correctly when loaded, but saving the page and then loading it will result in pure html text. Sad but true. Navigation without a mouse and touch screen is quite inconvenient. The pointer saves the day, which can be called up from the menu and using the arrows to move to the desired location in the document.

I would not talk about the browser as a full-fledged tool for working with the network; this tool should be considered only as a pleasant addition. You can probably use it if necessary, but it is not suitable for serious daily work or even basic viewing of the necessary resources (and this despite the fact that the documents on the screen look more than attractive, because the screen resolution is 640x480 pixels).

Section Contacts

This section stores all the information from the communicator’s address book (addresses, phone numbers, etc.), here you can view the resources of the card, as well as all the numbers recorded on it.

If you select a name in the left window, all the data about the person you are interested in will be displayed on the right side of the screen. There is a simple name search. In the editing mode, in addition to the standard fields with telephone numbers, addresses, text notes, you can add a photo, and then when you call it will be displayed along with the name and phone number. The number of entries in the phone book is limited only by the size of the communicator's free memory.

You can create both user groups and new databases. By the way, an individual user can belong to various groups, which is very convenient.

Calendar section

As the name suggests, we will talk about an organizer that, in my opinion, is extremely convenient. You can create events by marking them with any color, set the alarm time (if you need one), set priorities in the to-do list, etc., I suggest looking at the photos. I would like to note that the organizer really has everything you could dream of.

Office section

This section contains the Word, Sheet, presentation viewer and File manager applications. The first three applications, in fact, make up the communicator's mobile office. It is with their help that we view text documents, tables, presentations and edit them. In terms of their capabilities, they are, of course, inferior to desktop applications, but they give the user the opportunity to work without a desktop PC.

By the way, despite the lack of support for the Russian language and support for Unicode fonts, the latter are difficult to read. I found a way out of the situation: all texts typed on a PC using the Arial Unicode MS font are perfectly readable on the 9210 by the Word application. Moreover, the text can be copied and then used, for example, when sending an SMS message - it will reach the recipient in Russian (if the phone supports Cyrillic).

An attempt to do the same with the Sheet application was unsuccessful; instead of the Russian language, the file received a bunch of characters. The same goes for presentations.

Section Extras

This section contains programs for managing the communicator, in particular the control panel, Internet settings, clocks with alarms, the Imaging program for working with pictures, help, a calculator, a voice recorder, and a fax modem program for using the 9210 in this capacity. There is also a Data Mover program, which may be useful to owners of the 9110 communicator for transferring information; everyone else can remove this program.

The calculator looks like this. In my opinion, it is not very convenient.

You can see the clocks and alarm clocks in the photo. It is possible to set the clock to work in two time zones, enter a list of alarms, each of which can be configured according to all imaginable parameters. All these functions are implemented simply perfectly!

Let's take a closer look at the Imaging application, designed for working with images, in particular, Tagged Image File Format (TIFF, JPEG) TIF, JPG, JIF. Thumbnails are automatically created when viewing. You can create an album to store photos. The thumbnails look quite decent; if the image is expanded to full screen, it can be scaled. I hasten to disappoint fans of digital cameras: images in jpg format larger than 150 KB are read very poorly on a communicator - there is not enough memory (although thumbnails of these pictures can be viewed).

In the control panel you can examine the parameters of the communicator and make some settings.

In particular, you can configure display settings. When changing the color scheme, you will have to restart the communicator (close it and remove the batteries for a while).

You can find out how memory is distributed in the communicator itself and on the memory card; sometimes such information can be extremely useful.

This, in fact, ends the review of standard software. Let's see what programs are supplied additionally on the CD.

Additional programs

You can install about 20 additional programs from the CD, some of which can be really useful. All additional programs fall into the Extras section; if necessary, links can be placed on the desktop.

The first program I installed was Converter. This is a common converter of measures of length, weight, money and other things. Everything is very simple, accessible, understandable. Using this program, you can always find out how many meters are in one foot or ounces in a kilogram.

Real Payer is an exact copy of its desktop counterpart, but designed for mobile devices.

And finally about games. There are several of them on the disk. Bounce, an arcade toy (you need to guide a ball through mazes), very interesting and exciting, I recommend it.

Everyone's favorite snake. To be honest, I didn’t like this implementation, I don’t know why.

The next game, or rather a set of 6 games, is Card Deck. Mostly these are solitaire games - from Klondike to Nestor.

The last game that deserves special mention is TriplePop. I liked it so much that I'm now busy looking for a desktop version. If you know anything about them, please send me a link. The essence of the game comes down to the fact that a ball is spinning in the center, onto which multi-colored balls fly from all sides. Three balls of the same color when placed together disappear. Of course, you control the turns of the ball. This game is somewhat subtly reminiscent of Balls, but, perhaps, it is more original.

Subjective impressions

In terms of communication quality, the communicator is comparable to the Nokia 6210 phone: the same sensitivity, speaker volume in phone mode, sound clarity. So there are no and cannot be any complaints in this area. Sometimes it even seemed that the sensitivity of the 9210 was slightly better than that of the 6210, but this thesis could not be practically confirmed or refuted (everything can be attributed to the magnitude of the error).

Carrying the communicator in a bag is quite convenient, the call can be heard well. Any wav file can be used as a ringtone. When setting up a profile or editing it, you cannot immediately listen to the ringtone; you have to select it and only then listen.

Another drawback is the problems that the communicator encounters when working in telephone mode and then switching to PDA mode. So, having missed a call, I looked at the data about it on the external display, and the next time I opened the communicator, the internal backlight did not turn on. I had to restart the communicator. It seemed to me that there are enough problems like this. In particular, having switched from PDA mode to phone mode during a conversation, one day I simply hung up the 9210. The instability of working in two modes at the same time forces me to choose one. It is unlikely that you will lose data during such failures, but the fact itself is unpleasant.

At maximum brightness, the top of the display is illuminated so that the text on top becomes difficult to see.

The communicator is very sensitive to the availability of free memory (not on the card). If it is absent or insufficient, many programs stop working and report an error when opening.

Сonclusion

The Nokia 9210 communicator was one of the most awaited devices. In any case, it has already become, as they like to say now, iconic, and its commercial success or failure will not change this. While testing the 9210, I involuntarily caught myself thinking that the communicator had been developed quite a long time ago, but not all new communication technologies were reflected in it. No GPRS or Bluetooth support. And if support for the latter is not really needed yet, then GPRS is an urgent need. HSCSD technology will not save the situation, since it requires the purchase of a special adapter, which means additional money and speed only up to 43.6 Kbps. Of course, the developers promise that the situation will change with the release of Symbian Epoc 6.1 (current version 6.0), but who knows when that will be.

It’s also depressing that you have to use a slow COM port for synchronization - a USB cable would be nice. Thus, the 9210 does not fully justify the proud title of a communicator; it is, rather, a smartphone, since all the communication capabilities implemented in it are made for yesterday. Take, for example, an Internet browser that poorly displays most of the pages of modern sites stored in it.

It is convenient to use the communicator as a telephone, but only in conjunction with a speakerphone. Talking in phone mode is inconvenient, since the communicator weighs almost a quarter of a kilogram and does not have the most ergonomic shape. However, the inconvenience of the phone is compensated by service capabilities, in particular call logs, the ability to send and receive mail, faxes, short messages using the keyboard.

The office applications included in the kit are not intended for daily work, but for use, for example, on the road. Indeed, it is very convenient to read the necessary documents and, if necessary, make small amendments to them. Entering entire documents into 9210 is impractical.

An organizer coupled with alarm clocks is the ultimate dream. And if you remember about the chic phone book, you can close your eyes to some of the shortcomings of the communicator.

Drones to search for people lost in the forest 31.12.2020

Scientists at the Johannes Kepler University (Linz, Austria) have developed a new method based on machine learning technologies that should radically increase the efficiency of finding people lost in areas with dense vegetation.

Today, if it is necessary to urgently find people lost in the forest, search and rescue teams usually use helicopters or drones. Rescuers fly over the area where the missing are most likely to be found. The problem is that in conditions of dense vegetation it is almost impossible to see human figures in the thickets. Thermal imagers help a little in this situation, allowing you to "see" through the crowns of trees. But here, too, there are significant limitations. Unfortunately, in some cases, thermal imaging is also not particularly effective, for example, when the sun heats trees to a temperature close to human body temperature.

However, as researchers have proven, using artificial intelligence technologies can partially solve this problem. A special machine learning algorithm developed by the team collects a group of images of a certain area obtained from a helicopter or drone, and then combines them in such a way that they form a thermal image with a much higher resolution than a single thermal imager. After processing, the resulting images had a significantly greater depth of field, as a result, the trees in the images looked blurry, and the silhouettes of people lying on the ground became more recognizable.

To create a training AI base, volunteers were photographed using drones in different positions on the ground, which made it possible to ensure the accuracy of detecting people at the level of 87-95%.

To train the AI system, the researchers had to create their own database of images. They used drones to take pictures of volunteers on the ground in a variety of positions.

During testing of the AI system, the accuracy of detecting people in dense forest was at the level of 87-95%, compared to 25% for traditional thermal imaging. The researchers suggest that their system is ready for use by search and rescue teams, and can also be used by law enforcement, military or wildlife groups.
