NOKIA 5510. Mobile phone review Review The 5510 is the first Nokia handset to have a landscape layout instead of a vertical one, due to the presence of a keyboard (QWERTY) located to the right and left of the screen. The keys are plastic, small, almost none combined. Working with the keyboard is very convenient: hold the phone in your hands and type with your thumbs. Typing speed is high (if you know the standard layout, of course). In the lower right corner there is a speaker - in all other models of cell phones it is located in the center. Thus, Nokia engineers freed up space for the keyboard, but it became uncomfortable to talk while holding the phone in your right hand. The 5510 screen is similar to those installed on some other Nokia models, such as 8210. It displays up to 3 lines of text, as well as a line of icons and a line of labels for a soft key. The layout of the control keys resembles the Nokia 3310/3330 models: there is one large soft key under the display, next to the scroll and C keys. The backlight of the screen and keyboard is green, the top row of keys (numeric) is illuminated brighter. Both in the dark and in the light, the illuminated inscriptions on the keyboard are clearly visible. Finishing the conversation about the design, it is worth noting that at the end of the device, next to the speaker, there is an on/off button made of rubber. It is pressed without difficulty and, in addition to the main purpose, it serves to quickly switch profiles. On the opposite side of the device there are interface sockets, in particular, for connection of a charger and a stereo telephone headset with two plugs supplied in the package. One of them (black) is used to transmit music, the second (gray) is designed for a microphone. Plugs are connected side by side, increasing the already not the smallest size of the phone. Why it was impossible to implement all the functions in one plug is not entirely clear. After all, there is the Nokia 8310, in which the headset is connected through one connector, and this does not affect functionality in any way. On the front side surface there are keys for quick access to the FM-receiver and MP3-player. Here you can also adjust the volume of the sound in the headset (I warn you right away: the maximum volume is excessive). The receiver and player cannot be used without a headset, since listening is possible only through headphones. Nearby, behind a plastic plug in the same color as the case, there is a connector for connecting the 5510 to a computer's USB port and a connector for recording music from other devices (Line In). In principle, the 5510 allows you to record music from any external source that can be connected to this connector. The dimensions of the phone - 134 x 58 x 28 mm with a weight of 155 grams can not be called small. The ease of typing and ease of handling the phone turned into an inability to find a case or holster for it (more precisely, the need to buy only branded accessories). The 5510 is available in two colors - red (Groove Red) and blue (Melody Blue). 950 mAh lithium-ion battery provides 55 to 260 hours of standby time or 2.30 to 4.30 hours of talk time; on a single charge, you can also listen to the radio for up to 13.5 hours or up to 10 hours for the player, according to the manufacturer. In reality, when playing about 30 minutes of music a day and one or two minutes of calls, the phone worked for about 5 days. With more active listening to music (2 hours a day, mp3 player and 30 minutes of radio), the operating time of the device is reduced to 3 days. A full battery charge takes about 3 hours. The back cover covering the battery has voids, which makes the phone creak in the hands - this annoys some users. Phone features In terms of functional equipment, 5510, with the exception of some details, is a complete analogue of model 3330. The phone book is designed to store 100 numbers (in addition to the SIM card memory), one number is recorded per name. Individual users can be assigned personal melodies, of which there are 35 in the phone (including tones), in addition, it is possible to download or record up to 7 melodies. Sound signals, their volume and tone are typical for Nokia phones. Voice dialing for 8 numbers, as well as speed dialing for 9 numbers, can make life easier for the user. Nokia 5510 supports EMS, as a result, the phone has a memory for 50 graphic and 150 SMS messages; memory is allocated dynamically, that is, having 160 ordinary short messages, you can write fewer graphic messages and vice versa. There are message templates, including graphic ones, and in addition a list of emoticons that can be inserted into a message. Russian users will certainly be pleased with the presence of the T9 dictionary in the phone, which, together with the keyboard, makes typing short messages a simple and pleasant affair. By the way, 5510 supports connected messages (up to three) and sending a message to multiple recipients. Work with SMS is implemented in this device very well, almost everything you may need is provided, including chat. Other features of the 5510 include standard user profiles. The alarm clock is traditional, it works even when the phone is turned off. It is possible to automatically synchronize the date and time with the operator's network. In addition, the phone has a countdown timer, a stopwatch with support for a list of measurements and its saving, a calculator, a currency converter, and a rather simple to-do list for 220 events (case name, date and time of a reminder). In standby mode, you can set a graphic animated screensaver. The phone has 5 games: Snake II, Pairs II, Space Impact, Bantumi, Bumper. In addition, wap-browser (version 1.1) provides access to games from the Nokia website. In terms of sensitivity and speech quality, the 5510, in my opinion, does not differ from the Nokia 3330. Musical possibilities The phone has 64 megabytes of memory used only for storing music, which can be recorded in mp3 or AAC format (up to 2 hours in CD quality) from a PC. The kit comes with Nokia Audio Manager 2.0 PC software (also included in the Nokia Music Player kit), its installation does not cause problems: everything is relatively simple and clear, the main thing is to read the instructions before installation. As practice has shown, converting a CD with 60 minutes of music to AAC format takes about 20 minutes, and it will take about 7 minutes to load files into the player. Simply copying 3MB MP32 files will take about 5 minutes. The phone provides ample opportunities not only in terms of navigation, but also when choosing sounds: classic, rock, jazz, pop, bass (and extra bass), Latin American music or the default setting. All these options are only available for the mp3 player. You can also choose to listen to MP3 songs in a circle or randomly. Unfortunately, the mp3 player can only be switched off via the menu, it cannot be done from the headset. The kit comes with a cable to connect the phone to external sound sources (for example, a CD player), from which music can be recorded directly to the phone. It is possible to record radio broadcasts, but there is no voice recorder, which, it would seem, must be in this device. The headset allows you to switch saved stations (up to 20 in total) while listening to the radio, as well as accept or reject calls. Setting is possible both manual and automatic, everything is extremely simple. Subjectively, the quality of the FM tuner is comparable to the corresponding parameter of Nokia 8310 and, in general, any audio player receiver. The headphone volume is enough in all cases - the 5510 has no equal in this parameter. The sound quality is very good both when working in the radio mode and when playing MP3 compositions. Conclusions The Nokia 5510 phone is aimed primarily at the youth segment of the market: hence the extended functions for working with short messages, radio and mp3 player. 5510 engineers combined the Nokia 3330 youth phone with Nokia Music Player, expanding the latter's memory and adding a keyboard. Like any hybrid device, this device is not very convenient: phone and mp3 separately provide more opportunities. Nevertheless, the Nokia 5510 will find its fans, and Nokia's aggressive marketing will play a significant role in this. Author: Eldar Murtazin See other articles Section Mobile Legends.
