MOTOROLA V2288. Mobile phone overview
Review
It is possible to discuss for a long time the advantages or disadvantages of design, menus or technical characteristics of Motorola's mobile phones, but the fact is that it was Motorola who undertook the noble mission to bring such musical multimedia closer to the people, embodying it in the V2288 model - a two-standard phone with an integrated FM tuner. Let's take a closer look at what one of the leaders of the capitalist telephone industry offered us this time. Packaging, design and ergonomics of the phone In a standard packaging box, not pre-paid, which are usually offered by mobile communication service dealers for a certain operator’s promotion, the device itself and the accessories attached to it are conveniently located: a compact charger, a swivel clip (phone mount) for a two-piece belt, a set of 3 AAAL type batteries with a capacity of 700 mAh, two replaceable rubber cases for the phone: a choice of red and blue colors, instructions for using the phone in English and German and, most importantly, a kit for listening to radio stations: stereo headphones drops + microphone, i.e. . full mobile headset or hands-free. The phone has a rather original and even cool youth design, somewhat reminiscent of the Motorola T2288, although in size (48x135x25 mm) it practically does not differ from the Motorola m3888. Due to the compact type of batteries, it weighs 150 g, i.e. lighter m3888 by 20 grams. Although the size of the device today is too big, but thanks to a somewhat futuristic design it is imperceptible, this allows you to use the phone without fear for your own prestige. The phone is in no way spoiled by the set of colored rubber cases that come with it in red and blue (they can also be yellow and green). The design of the device is based on them. The cover acts as a kind of replacement skin for the phone, and allows you to protect the device from scratches or damage in case of careless handling. There are three color options for the front panel and battery compartment of the device (mercury, black metallic, bright orange); the back panel is "just" silver. The phone fits comfortably in the hand; for attaching to the belt, a team of 2 parts of the clip is attached, which, frankly, seemed to me a little frail in appearance. However, the process of wearing the device showed that this is not entirely true. The clip securely fastens the phone to your belt, and sometimes it will not be possible to remove it from there on the first try. Display and menu Turning on the phone was marked by an animated unfolding of the Motorola logo on its fully graphic high-contrast display (resolution 96x64 pixels, up to 5 lines). I wasn't impressed by the originality of the menu: on the whole, it's an ordinary, no-frills, standard graphical menu of Motorola devices. An innovation for a motorola of this price class is the contrast setting, which is quite optimal by default. There is an animation of the icons: the arrival of a new SMS, the beginning and end of a call, turning off the phone, etc. The menu is organized in the form of a tree - pressing OK on the item - went down to the sub-item below, pressed C - went up. In addition, the device is equipped with a shortcut key, which contains frequently used menu functions, such as voice mail, search in the phone book, reading and editing SMS, call forwarding, etc., everything described completely repeats the similar menu of the t2288 model. In the quick access menu, you can add your own items from the list of 28 possible ones. A nice difference was the significant ease of navigation. The power button of the latter is logically located quite conveniently. Two navigation keys, the "C" key and the "OK" multifunctional key, will help manage the entire menu economy. The up and down navigation buttons are duplicated on the phone keypad with "*" and "#", but only work when editing a message or ringtone.
Signal and musical part The main and most remarkable feature of all Motorola phones is the ability to save money. This applies to all models and is implemented in the form of a two-stage sound timer for per-second recording of the conversation time. Available only after appropriate setting is the option to select a signal and its level for SMS and enter your own melody in the melody editor. 11 call options are available in the standard firmware. Unfortunately, a vibrating alert was not found among them, although its presence is indicated in the characteristics of this model on most Russian sites dedicated to mobile communications. The melody editor did not please with convenience, and to enter your own melody, you first need to at least study musical notation, because it contains the letter designations of notes and the length of each sound (for musicians - there is no flat, use sharp), although you can specify the length of the pause. The maximum volume of the signal is quite high - the call is perfectly audible in noisy transport and at a disco. SMS - short message service SMS functions are standard. The phone's memory is designed to store 13 messages. When reading a short message, an animated icon in the form of a mail envelope is displayed on the left side of the screen, which in my opinion is an overkill, as it reduces the usable screen area for text output. Another drawback is the inconvenient navigation through the message, which is especially noticeable when writing and editing it. It is possible to move only forward and backward, but it would also be necessary to move up and down, since the number of cursor buttons allows this. Phone book Notebook for 100 numbers + up to 255 on a SIM card. There is a speed dial for the first 9 numbers. To do this, press and hold the desired number key for a few seconds. There are two types of record search: alphabetically and sequentially. You can add a number to the book from almost any phone state. FM tuner The tuner in the phone pleased with its fairly high-quality sound. It is activated by a separate button on the right side surface of the device - on the left there is a socket for stereo headphones. The "#" and "*" keys in 0,1 MHz increments and the "up and down" menu keys for quick search are responsible for selecting the frequency. Up to 9 radio stations can be stored in the phone's memory (using keys 1 - 9). They are remembered as in most audio players, to enter the frequency of the selected station into memory, simply hold down the selected number key of the phone for a while. Even if you receive a call while listening, just press the "OK" key and the receiver will turn off. Listening to the radio is output to the included stereo headphones of very decent quality, although they are manufactured in China. Problems found - often radio reception, especially when the signal level is insufficient, falls into mono mode. Although this can only be detected subjectively, since the phone has no stereo reception indicator, unfortunately. Network sensitivity and quality The sensitivity of the phone is quite sufficient not only for the city, but also for the countryside. Although it should be noted that Motorola v20 lags behind the old cd25 and m2288 by this indicator by 930-3888%. The phone holds the network confidently and does not lose it, even in places with a poor signal. The firmware flashed in this model is of sufficient quality, I did not notice any failures, spontaneous shutdowns and unmotivated network losses. The function of choosing one of two telephone lines has been implemented, but unfortunately, it is not supported by most operators. I would like to pay special attention to the hands-free built into the stereo headphones. Comfortable! The latter are equipped with soft foam liners. A small microphone is located at the junction of the wire from the right and left earphones, and a special clothespin allows you to fix it, if necessary, anywhere in your clothing. Although there is no auto-raising option when calling, this is not particularly inconvenient, you just need to press the easily accessible OK button. In this case, the sound is output only to the right earpiece, although it would be possible in both. The microphone is sensitive and selective to noise, it did not cause any particular complaints. Voice quality is excellent both with and without hands-free. Food Powered by three NiMh AAAL AA batteries with a capacity of 700 mAh. According to the documentation standby time: 135 hours (standard battery), talk time: 210 minutes (standard battery). When installed, a red rim is applied to one end of the battery for correct orientation, and special red marks are made in the battery compartment. The use of a tuner significantly reduces the life of the device from a single charge. On average, this is 3-4 days without using the tuner and 1.5-2 with it. Internet The phone is equipped with a WAP browser version 1.1, which allows you to surf the few WAP-pages on the Internet with sufficient convenience. Summary Model V2288 can clearly be attributed to the category of bright youth devices that combine the original appearance and ease of use, combined with a low price. The FM tuner allows you to enjoy music and stay up to date with all the events, and hands-free - to talk without removing the phone from your belt or without taking it out of your pocket. In terms of sensitivity and design - not a giant, but a real find for music lovers. You should pay attention to the version of the firmware flashed in the device, since not all of them allow you to enable additional service functions in the phone.
