MOTOROLA T280

In addition to the phone itself, the package includes an 850 mAh lithium-ion battery, a travel charger, a telephone headset, and a USB cable for connecting to a PC and data transfer. To work with a PC, software is supplied (on a CD) that allows you to synchronize the phone book and diary. In addition, there is another disc, GPRS Wizard, which should make it as easy as possible for the user to work with GPRS.

In appearance, this phone is somewhat different from its counterparts. The silver body of the T280 resembles other Mororola devices, except for the transparent plastic lining around the display, which subtly changes the appearance of this phone. Below the display is a menu navigation key, a little higher - a rocker with soft keys. By the way, the user can independently set up menu items that are called up when the swing is deflected to the left or right, similar to how it is implemented in Siemens phones of the 35th series. Clicking on the swing in the middle brings up the menu.

The keys are made of rubber and covered with paint (the coating looks extremely durable). Please note that the number 5 key, unlike all other number keys, is recessed. This implementation of the key makes it easy to dial a number in the dark without using the backlight. A very handy innovation.

The keys on the side surfaces are also rubber. In particular, the keys on the left are used to adjust the ringer or speaker volume during a call. Next to these keys is a socket for connecting a telephone headset. The key on the right gives access to the voice recorder and voice tags. At the top is the IrDA window.

The antenna of this model is external, fixed. If you look at the back of the device, you will see a bulge in the battery area. After removing the cover, you will find a lot of free space under it. This was done for one purpose - to connect a Bluetooth cartridge, the technology of which is supported by this phone. The cartridge is installed together with a special thin lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 525 mAh. The commercial launch of this cartridge is expected no earlier than February 2002. Nevertheless, the engineers initially provided for a place for it. It is a pity that in addition to the large back cover, among the accessories there is no ordinary, tight-fitting one. With such a cover, the phone would look more flat and attractive. Dimensions of the device - 125x49x24 mm, weight - 118 grams.

The design of the SIM holder is standard for the phones of this company, nothing special: everything is simple and at the same time reliable.

But the design of the battery mount deserves a separate description. From above, the battery is hooked under an external latch, and from below it snaps into place using a separate plastic holder. The installed battery is securely fixed and has only a slight play, which does not affect the state of the contacts. To remove the battery, you need to pull the latch down and then lift the battery. The design as a whole is simple, but very effective and reliable.

The battery, according to the manufacturer, is capable of providing 250 minutes of talk time and up to 260 hours of standby time. As field tests have shown, in urban conditions the phone can work without turning off at night for up to 4 days (and in areas with a weak signal) with an average call duration of up to 15 minutes a day. The time to fully charge the battery is about 2 - 2.5 hours. While charging, the screen backlight is always on. At the end of the charge, a corresponding message is displayed on the display. Unfortunately, the battery level can only be monitored using an indicator in the icon bar (3 bars) or a proprietary battery level indicator (6 bars). The last indicator is no more informative, since its readings change by 2 divisions, which ultimately corresponds to three divisions.

By the way, the display in this model is also not quite usual. Immediately striking is its size - the screen is very large. The display has an optimax resolution of 128x100 pixels and a green backlight. The user has the ability to increase or decrease the font size on their own. In the first case, 4 lines will fit on the screen, in the second - 6 lines of text in addition to the line of icons and labels for soft keys.

In standby mode, the display shows the name of the mobile operator, the time, the number of the used line (line 1 in most cases), signal strength indicators, batteries and signal type icons. Let's dwell on them in a little more detail. In total, there are five types of indication and, accordingly, types of signals: loud ring, vibration, quiet ring, silent call and mixed mode, when the phone vibrates and rings at the same time. Of course, a comparison with profiles in phones from other manufacturers immediately suggests itself, but, in my opinion, this solution using intuitive icons is more successful.

The phone is turned on and off using a separate key located next to the IrDA window. Behind, behind a rubber plug, there is a small socket for connecting an external antenna.

Overview of menus and phone features

As already mentioned, you can call up the menu by pressing the rocker key in the middle. Externally, the menu is very similar to that implemented in Motorola v50 (the same scrollbars, graphic elements), but after walking around with the phone for at least a couple of days, you begin to understand that it is much richer in its capabilities. Upon completion of various actions, windows appear announcing the result of the procedure performed, there are unusual design elements and successful finds, but first things first.

The main menu consists of several items, each of which, in turn, has sub-items. There is no navigation using number sequences in the menu, but this is not necessary, since the menu is well structured and navigating through it is not difficult. Any menu item can be assigned shortcuts for quick access. When viewing the desired item, just press the rocker button in the middle to open the shortcut creation dialog. This dialog provides an opportunity not only to assign a shortcut to a specific key (from 1 to 9), but also to create a voice tag. The latter cannot be entered without a key number, so you have only 9 shortcuts at your disposal, which is more than enough in my opinion.

From the main menu, you can view and edit the full list of installed tags, and you will see if the tag has a voice tag, and you can listen to it.

In general, work with sound in the device is implemented very well. The recorder for three minutes allows you to record an unlimited number of records within this time, each of which can be deleted separately from the others, and also blocked to protect against accidental deletion. Of course, records can be unlocked. When listening to speech comments with the joystick, you can not only move to the next recording, but also listen to the current recording from the beginning, rewind 3 seconds forward or backward. Each of the listed actions corresponds to the joystick deflection in one of the directions.

In addition to the voice recorder, there is voice dialing for 25 numbers. This function is implemented perfectly: if you try to record a voice tag that is identical to an existing one, the phone will warn you about this and advise you to select a different name. Today, no company has a similar implementation of voice dialing. Even in conditions of strong noise, the phone confidently recognizes voice tags.

Speaking of voice dialing, one cannot help but dwell on the phone book. Up to 500 address book entries can be stored in the phone's memory. For each name, it is possible to record several phone numbers: home, work, cell, etc. - and for each of them you can set a separate voice tag, as well as a speed dial sequence and an icon displayed next to the number.

When working with the phone book, you can view all entries by name, next to the right, the phone number will be displayed as an icon. It is also possible to view detailed information for each name in the book: by moving the joystick down or up, you will scroll through the entries. The latter can be sorted by names, voice tags, or short strings for dialing.

Let's move on to the organizer. It is also designed to store up to 500 entries, and you can customize settings such as the time you wake up and how long you want to keep entries ("always" or a number of weeks, selectable from a list). For each event, a name, an alarm trigger time (you can turn it off), a time during which the alarm will periodically remind you of the event, as well as a date and repeat mode (daily, weekly, weekly on a specific day of the week, monthly on a specific day and yearly) are set. ). The number of possibilities and settings in the organizer is simply amazing! But since you do not have to go through all the settings and you can choose only the most necessary ones, the organizer turns into a very convenient tool for doing things.

It is worth mentioning separately the customizable phone settings. Firstly, the user has the opportunity to choose the duration of the backlight up to constant. The choice of melodies and ring tones is rich: there are 32 of them in total, plus the possibility of creating up to 32 personal melodies. Of the 32 presets, 5 deserve a special mention: these are not exactly melodies - these are vibration signal types. Thus, you can choose the scheme by which the phone's vibrating alert will work, I have not seen analogues of this function until today. There is a sound timer that can be manually set to any time. The talk time can be displayed on the screen.

This phone has the ability to run SIM applications, there is a separate item in the menu for this. A wap browser (version 1.1) in addition to GPRS capabilities (class B 2+1) makes this phone quite advanced. Already in January, along with the new software version, wap browser will become version 1.2, and GPRS will get two more download slots (4+1). Thus, without changing the device, you will become the owner of the most modern set of functions. In addition to these improvements in the new version of the software, changes will be made to work with the joystick, it will respond to pressing.

An extremely convenient calculator is also provided, which not only performs the simplest operations, but also remembers the results of calculations for further use. There is a currency converter.

Subjective impressions about the quality of communication and something else

In urban conditions, the T280 showed more than decent results. There were practically no communication failures, and the noticed ones were explained not by the poor sensitivity of the device, but by the presence of dead zones in which other phones did not work either. In my opinion, the sensitivity of this phone is slightly above average. I involuntarily compared the T280 with the Nokia 6210: in most situations, the devices work approximately the same. The sound quality of the T280 deserves special praise: it is not only comparable to that of the 6210, but in some cases even better.

And now for those who inattentively looked at the photos of the phone. What has been talked about for so long has finally happened. Along with support for EMS technology, Motorola T280 now supports Cyrillic input for SMS messages, phone book and organizer.

It is assumed that the T280 will have two rows of inscriptions on the keyboard - upper Russian and lower Latin. Working with SMS in general is standard, there are templates and other functions that have become commonplace.

Сonclusion

A huge display, many functions, a large notebook, the ability to synchronize with a PC, the presence of wap 1.2 (the ability to use e-commerce services in the future), the presence of support for GPRS technology. The list is almost endless; The phone has a lot of "pluses", it has no "minuses" as such.

To be honest, after two weeks of using the T280, I got used to this handy device. Perhaps this leaves some imprint on my reasoning, but it seems to me that this model can really become a new bestseller from Motorola, it has all the prerequisites for this. The T280 embodies all the innovations of competitors and Motorola's own developments. Here is the most striking example: on older models of Motorola phones, the keypad lock was activated by pressing * and # at the same time, which was inconvenient. On this model, you need to press the menu and then *, similar to how it is implemented in Nokia phones. There are many such innovations, if we consider them separately, it seems that Motorola itself has not brought anything new to the device. Studying the functions in their totality, you will understand how this phone is more convenient than its predecessors. I liked that the best devices from different manufacturers were taken and implemented in one model.

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

A safe and inexpensive way to launch small satellites 21.07.2019

The search for low cost solutions to propel CubeSats is one of the most important components of the rapidly growing commercial satellite launch industry. The small size and relatively low cost have made CubeSats a popular choice for commercial launches in recent years.

The first CubeSat was launched in 1999. Since then, over 1000 have been sent into space. The rapid development and application of nanosatellite technology has greatly increased the complexity of the mission - sparking interest in reliable, low power and highly specific pulsed micropulse systems.

Purdue University researchers have created a novel micropulsation system for nanosatellite applications using a pulsed, liquid-fed plasma engine. It uses liquid propellant for a plasma accelerator with a pulsed Lorentz force and an extended life ignition system driven by nanosecond long pulses.

"Our innovations help address current challenges with CubeSat micropulsation systems, including short lifespan, contamination risks and economic challenges," said Alexei Shashurin, assistant professor of aeronautics and astronautics at Purdue Technical College. "Our system is capable of operating reliably throughout the mission, and The liquid fuels we use do not pose the pollution risk to subsystems that we see with current options."
