LG 510. Mobile phone review
Review
So, the fourth device from LG has appeared on our market - the LG-510 model. The new product is distinguished by an interesting design and a rich choice of body colors - cobalt metallic, blue metallic, light gray, red metallic and silver, there are 5 in total. The dimensions of the phone are very small - 82,5x45x18,5 mm, it fits easily in the palm of your hand. The appearance and ergonomics of the LG-510 are such that the device is suitable for both men and women - it is a universal model. The light weight of the phone (78 grams) is ensured by the use of a 630 mAh lithium-polymer battery. According to the manufacturer, the LG-510 can work up to 200 hours in standby mode and up to 2.7 hours in talk mode. In real conditions, these figures are much lower: with 10 minutes of calls per day, the device operates for 2-2.5 days, no more. If you don’t use the phone at all, it will work for about 3 days - the result is not the most outstanding, however, you can always buy a higher-capacity battery, this is a 1050 mAh lithium-ion battery. With this battery, the actual operating time of the phone will increase to 3-4 days. The time to fully charge a standard battery is one and a half hours. When you open the phone, you immediately notice the large display: with a resolution of 128x128 pixels, the screen can accommodate up to 7 lines of text and 2 service lines. The display backlight is emerald, clearly visible in the dark; shades of gray are reproduced very well, so information on the screen is easy to read. A little later, a modification appeared with a blue screen backlight, and the keyboard backlight was of the same color. Now the vast majority of devices are supplied in the second version, as it looks more interesting. The keyboard, made of plastic, is located almost flush with the body. When you press the keys, you involuntarily rest your fingers on the body, which is not very convenient, but, nevertheless, you quickly get used to the keyboard and stop paying attention to this small drawback. In general, the keys are recessed to prevent accidental pressing of the screen when the phone is closed. The rubber protrusions located on the sides at the top serve the same purpose, protecting the display when closing the lid. On the left is a two-position volume key, below is a key to access the voice recorder (30 seconds of recording, including during a call, the total number of recordings is 3, it is possible to delete them all or individually). Menu, phone book In standby mode, the screen displays the carrier name, time, date, and the selected sound profile. Labels for the soft keys are displayed at the bottom, and a line of icons is displayed at the top, including the network signal level, battery charge level (3 bars), and an image of the set alarm clock. To get to the main menu, which consists of 8 items, each of which has sub-items, just press the left soft key. The menu organization is simple and logical, the icons are very nice and animated. Fast navigation is provided using digital sequences, i.e. Each menu item and sub-item is numbered. Phone book You can enter 510 names in the LG-200 address book, specifying for each of them 4 phone numbers (work, home, mobile, fax) and an email address. Entering names is possible in both English and Russian, with a maximum name length of 20 characters (less on a SIM card). When you enter a new name, you need to select the default number - then it will be displayed as the main one, and the remaining numbers can be easily viewed by pressing the horizontal navigation keys. When you subsequently edit the name, you cannot change the default number - you will either have to dial the first number again or leave everything as is. By pressing the vertical navigation keys in standby mode, you will be taken to the phone book, in which all numbers, both from the SIM card and from the phone memory, will be displayed in one list. Moreover, the list of names is displayed at the top of the window, and at the bottom you see the number for the current name - a very convenient menu organization. The phone supports subscriber groups. By default, the following 4 groups are installed: Family, Friend, Colleague and VIP. The user has the opportunity to create up to 3 more of his own groups (20 names in each). Undoubtedly, dividing into groups is a useful option, it’s only a pity that the phone does not have the ability to assign an individual ring tone to each individual group. From the Record menu Book You can set up to 8 speed dial numbers by selecting them in the phone book. A slight disappointment awaits us here: you can only select a default number, additional numbers remain unavailable. That is, if you write down your work, home and mobile numbers (in that order), speed dialing will only be available for the work number. In the same menu, you can assign voice tags (up to 10) to numbers from the phone book - just select the number and select Voice from the menu. In the LG-510, audio greetings are recorded in Russian, which is good news - the localization is generally done quite well. Tags are recognized well even in noisy conditions. When you try to record two identical tags, the phone warns that a tag with the same word already exists and asks you to select another word. The phone book (both in the phone memory and on the SIM card) allows you to search by name or phone number. Messages menu This item (the first in the main menu) provides access to reading and typing short messages, as well as setting up broadcast reception. The phone has a separate memory for 100 short messages plus SIM card memory (usually for 10 messages). You have 6 preset message templates and the ability to create up to 5 of your own. All pre-installed templates are written in Russian - support for Russian is organized quite well: among other things, it provides predictive text input eZi, similar to T9 (English and Russian languages, each of the dictionaries operates depending on the selected menu language). It works, in my opinion, about the same as T9 - you get used to it quite quickly. Receiving and sending messages in Russian does not cause any difficulties. When entering text, you can quickly switch between Latin and Cyrillic alphabet - just press and hold #, with the same key you can change the case of letters, as well as turn on the numeric keypad. The phone supports concatenated messages, and this mode is enabled by default, so if you exceed the dimensions of a standard message, it will be automatically split into several parts. One concatenated message can contain up to 1024 characters. Menu Calls This item allows you to view lists of outgoing, incoming and missed calls, each of which contains up to 20 entries indicating the time and date of the call. There are also counters for the duration of the last call and the total time of all calls. I would like to dwell in more detail on one feature of the phone. When making outgoing calls, it perfectly substitutes numbers from the phone book and shows the name. But for incoming calls, regardless of how the number is written (7 digits or in international format), the name is not displayed - only the number, which is very inconvenient. An attempt to find out the reason for this behavior of the device did not lead to anything: as the practice of using the phone has shown, sometimes it randomly begins to substitute names, but they are still not saved in the list of incoming calls - only the number is visible there. One could assume that this is a problem with a specific device, but it was repeated in other samples, so we are waiting for a new version of the software. Menu Forward As the name implies, all settings related to call forwarding are hidden in this item, and there is nothing special to write about this menu. Audiopro menu This item allows you to configure user profiles. The device supports a silent profile (vibrate alert only), as well as Private, Loud, Silent profiles, for which it is possible to set the signal for an incoming call, received message, key tone, etc. The call operating modes can be combined: ring only, ring and vibration alert at the same time, call after vibration alert, silent mode. It's nice that you can change profiles by simply pressing the left arrow in standby mode - as a result, a small menu will appear and the profile will be changed. In standby mode, the current profile icon is displayed on the screen. In total, the phone has 17 ringtones, 3 tones and 3 empty slots for your ringtones. The melodies are quite well-known, mostly classical works. The tone of the call is not the best, but you can hear it well; The maximum volume is acceptable. The vibration alert from the pocket of a winter jacket is felt, but barely. In general, these functions are implemented in the phone quite averagely. Settings Menu The first item is Alarm Clock, just like in the menu of Nokia phones. The alarm can be set to sound once, daily, weekly or monthly. When you turn off the power, the phone automatically turns on and an alarm sounds. You cannot set a separate melody for the alarm clock. In the same Settings menu, you can configure the date and time, the behavior of the phone when opened (activating voice dialing, answering an incoming call). Among the suggested settings are setting a welcome text message and a message displayed in standby mode; adjusting the display contrast, setting the wallpaper displayed in standby mode (six inexpressive, boring pictures, for which there is also no preview mode). Menu Organizer The calendar contains 20 events that are viewed at once per month. To make room for new entries, you will have to delete old ones selectively or all together. For each note, you can set the trigger time (once, daily, weekly, monthly and yearly). The organizer does not offer any other options. Menu Accessories In the World Time item, you can scroll through the list of the main cities on the planet and view time zones. There is also a calculator and converter here. Here you can, for example, convert inches to centimeters. The latter, unlike previous LG models, is called a converter, not a converter. As already mentioned, the quality of Russification of this model is much higher than the previous ones. Of the five games installed on the phone, four are familiar to us from other devices - Black Jack, Crazy. Racing, Corsair, Kamen. Axe. The new game is called Comanche and is painfully reminiscent of a toy that the author played on 286 machines. In general, you can kill time, although without much benefit. Internet menu Behind such a loud name lies a wap browser version 1.2.1, which works without any problems. Impressions and conclusions LG-510 provides very good call quality; The only problem I noticed was with the phone rebooting when trying to make a call from a weak signal area. In the area of reliable reception, the connection is good, the speaker clearly reproduces the voice of the interlocutor. Setting the volume to maximum only makes sense in extremely noisy places (for example, on a busy street), but not indoors. The phone comes with a headset equipped with a key for receiving calls. Overall, the phone leaves a very pleasant impression: good design, well-developed interface, good localization (including Russian-language input). The disadvantages include the relatively short operating time on a standard battery (Samsung SGH-A400 works, for example, only a day), shortcomings when working with the phone book, and a small amount of memory in the organizer. Anyone who likes flip phones, as well as catchy, eye-catching phones, should pay attention to the LG-510. So far, this model has not become widespread and, at least for that reason, is of interest. From a technical point of view, the new product from LG is an average model in terms of functionality with a good menu and stable functions, but, nevertheless, it is significantly better than other devices from LG - let's hope that subsequent phones will be even more interesting.
