ERICSSON T68. Mobile phone review Review This is a small phone in size (100x48x20 mm), the weight is also small - only 84 grams. Available in two body colors: gold (Ziroccan Gold) and gray (Lunar Grey). The phone in the photographs is less attractive than in life: the colors and design of the case are subtly different from the image. The absence of an external antenna makes the appearance of the device more interesting, and the silvery side surfaces contrast favorably with the front panel of the phone and the back cover, which is also a battery. The back surface is made of black matte plastic that feels like rubber to the touch - a very pleasant feeling, plus the phone does not slip on sloped surfaces. The battery itself is lithium-polymer, with a capacity of 700 mAh; according to the manufacturer, it can work up to 11 hours of talk time and up to 300 hours of standby time. Under the conditions of Moscow networks, the phone worked for about 5 days with 15 minutes of calls per day and minimal use of other functions. According to user reviews, with an hour of calls per day, the device is enough for 2 days of work. With the active use of the functions of the phone, games, alarm clock and an average talk time of 30 minutes, it can work for about 3 days. One would have expected much less battery life, as the presence of a color display drastically reduces the overall battery life. To the credit of Ericsson's engineers, this did not happen, by the way, and another model, namely the T39, runs on a single charge for a very long time. The average time to fully charge the battery is just under 2 hours. It is worth dwelling on the display in more detail, since in this parameter the phone differs from any GSM-device that was presented on the market before. The T68 has a graphic display that allows displaying up to 256 colors and has a resolution of 101x80 pixels with a physical size of 34x28 mm. The screen can fit up to 8 lines of text, which is very good and allows you to view short messages or wap-pages without much difficulty. In standby mode with the backlight turned off, the display is blind, you have to look closely, it is impossible to see the screen without backlight. . With the backlight on, you see the screen quite well, the text is clear, the images are clear. It is possible to leave the backlight constantly on, then the phone will last for a day of work, at night you will have to put it in charge. In addition, you can adjust the contrast of the display (10 divisions). It is possible to install three types of fonts: standard, large or small - I prefer the standard one. And finally, the last solution related to the dimming of the display in standby mode is the clock. In standby mode, a bright digital clock moves across the screen against a black background; due to the contrast, they are well visible and very pleasant to look at. In direct sunlight, the image on the display is visible, but, of course, not so good, nevertheless, working with the phone does not cause problems. The screen is backlit by LEDs located on the side. Concluding the story about the appearance of the T68, one cannot but say about the keyboard - it is made of plastic and has a silver coating. The inscriptions on the keys are visible in any conditions: both in bright light and in the dark. Under the screen there is a navigation key, which, despite its small size, is extremely convenient - in addition to 4 shift directions, it can be pressed. Everything is very simple and convenient. Phone Features With a set of functions similar to T39, this device is fundamentally different, partly due to the fact that the color display left its mark on the functionality, and partly due to the fact that Ericsson has brought to mind its old developments. Let's start with the simplest, namely the menu. You can get into it by pressing the navigation joystick or tilting it in a horizontal direction. You will immediately see 9 icons of the main menu, now there are no tabs, as before, and the new type of menu has become much more convenient. So, now you do not need to scroll through all the bookmarks sequentially, you can select the desired item by moving in any direction. Quick navigation through the menu using digital sequences has been preserved. Inside the menu remains the same: the usual list of items, each of which is numbered. It is possible to assign keyboard shortcuts to individual menu items, up to 14 items in total. Let's consider the items in order: first, it is, of course, the phone book. It can store up to 510 numbers (phone memory) plus up to 230 numbers in the SIM card memory. For each name, you can record up to 5 numbers (home, work, mobile, fax, other), as well as specify an email address, first name, last name, company and name (it's called that, so you can write whatever you want here). For text fields, the maximum number of characters is 15, and there is no difference for English and Russian languages. Unfortunately, despite the presence of such a function as predictive text input T9, it was not possible to activate it. Input in Russian is implemented traditionally well. A small flaw is the spelling of the letter "Y" in the appearing list of letters: it has a backslash in writing, but this cannot be considered a serious flaw, since this does not affect the work at all. Entries in the phonebook can be assigned to different caller groups, which you can create as you wish. It is possible to assign up to 41 voice tags for dialing numbers from the phone book. In addition to this, there are voice identifiers of the number type, that is, you can say a name and then a number type, for example, "Home", and the phone will choose a home phone number for this subscriber - conveniently. Recognition works quite well, but traditionally there is a small problem - the ability to create two identical tags, there is no verification in the phone. So, by creating the label "Vanya" (for example, his last name is Samoilov), you can call his number, but if you later create the same label for Vanya Pupkin, you will automatically replace the first one. More precisely, both labels will exist, but the set will go only on the second one. Other manufacturers, such as Motorola or Alcatel, check the existence of the tag on new models. In addition to voice tags for dialing, it is possible to assign tags for calling profiles - this is also very convenient. It is a pity that when calling voice dialing, the delay before dialing is about one and a half to two seconds - you have to wait. There are also two voice commands to control the recorder: "record" and "listen" - they work, of course, only in standby mode. By the way, the voice recorder in the device allows you to save up to 108 seconds or up to 41 seconds with high quality. There are no restrictions on the number of entries within the total time, it is possible to assign a name to each entry, edit them individually. And now the bad news: the phone has a menu where you can choose what the recorder will record - your voice or the voice of the interlocutor, there is no simultaneous recording. It is also inconvenient that you have to go into the menu to start recording - there is no "Voice recorder" item in the quick menu. The "Magic Word" feature found in the T39 and R520m is also available on this phone, but only works when a headset or hands-free car kit is connected. It does not work in standby mode. For those who have forgotten, let me remind you that this feature allows you to activate voice commands remotely, just say a keyword and then say a voice tag. Traditionally, you should consider the "Messages" item - everything is standard here, as in other modern devices from Ericsson. There is a section for sending e-mail: the phone supports POP3 and SMTP servers, everything is extremely simple and clear. When working with e-mail, the built-in client downloads message headers, while the Cyrillic alphabet is not always read correctly. There is also a problem with the fact that not all addresses of mail servers are accepted by the Beeline network, for some addresses it was not possible to configure mail reception. By the way, server addresses can be specified both explicitly and as an ip-address. It is possible to create your own templates for short messages. The phone fully supports the EMS standard, there is also support for MMS, which is distinguished by the ability to send audio and video files. This function is not implemented in the current version of the software, as it requires support from operators, but the instructions say that it will become available in new firmware versions. The phone is pre-installed with many small pictures that can be sent via short messages to other devices. More interestingly, the phone allows you to change the design of the menu, this applies to the background and headings, there are 5 themes - a very nice innovation that really diversifies the phone. In addition, you can set one of 10 color pictures as wallpaper - you will see it in the standby mode. You can also download one of the 12 pictures from the manufacturer's website using a wap-browser. Only one picture is stored in memory. In addition, you can prepare your picture yourself, remembering that it must be in GIF format (Graphical Interchange Format, 87a or 89a without animation) and no larger than 8 KB (3 KB when using wap-download). Let's dwell on other functions: the phone has two alarm clocks - a regular one and a special one. As the name implies, a regular alarm clock is very simple, it works once, but for a special one, you can set the days of the week when it will work. There is a countdown timer, when it is set and started, the time line in standby mode is replaced by a timer. When the timer goes off, you hear a beep and feel a vibration. The stopwatch in the phone allows you to receive intermediate values and view them after, you cannot save the results, as in other models. It remains to say that the phone has a calculator and a memo of codes, everything is very simple and clear. Finally, the most interesting item is a calendar or just an organizer. Here you can create up to 300 marks and up to 80 tasks, which depends solely on the length of the accompanying text, since the memory is allocated dynamically. It is possible to synchronize calendar data with a PC, while the data on the phone can be viewed both for the day and for the week. When viewing the calendar for a month, all dates for which there are tasks are highlighted in bold - this is inconvenient when using the organizer all the time. In total, you can enter several types of events: trip, memorable date, meeting, vacation, call, anniversary, miscellaneous. There is also an additional list for tasks, here you can enter information about the need to make a call, send a message or do something else. So, when a reminder to send a short message is triggered, you will immediately be taken to the menu for typing a message, which is very convenient. The phone will notify you about the triggering of events from the calendar with a vibration and sound signal, while it will prompt you to select the current profile - sometimes this is convenient, sometimes not. The phone has 6 games, all of them are colored - the already known Erix, Ripple, Tetris and the new Game (space shooter), Q (something like sokoban), Solitaire (4 solitaire games). In the game Game, the resulting values are not displayed very nicely - a little trifle, but unpleasant. Subjective impressions T68 is quite good in terms of sound quality, moreover, in terms of sensitivity this device surpasses all Ericsson models except for T39. And this means that Ericsson has managed to release a very good device, which can be safely called one of the best in the line of Ericsson phones. There are no explicit problems with sensitivity, the phone began to confidently keep in touch where other devices of this manufacturer lose the network. In addition, if the network is lost, re-registration is very fast. If the phone is in a weak signal zone, then voice dropouts are possible, while the connection does not break, and at some point it may improve - undoubtedly, this is a plus. Of the R1B firmware errors, only one was noticed: when a new event is entered into the calendar and an incoming call, a call window appears asking if you want to accept it, but, unfortunately, it is not always possible to answer this question, since the "Yes" key does not works. This problem did not always occur, but about 10 percent of the time when editing the calendar. The keypad of the phone, despite its small size, is comfortable; in general, the device lies well in the hand. Unfortunately, in terms of tones and melodies pre-installed in the memory, the phone is very poor, there are only 10 of them. True, it is possible to get or create up to 8 of your own melodies. When you select a melody, it will be played to the end in any case, even if you have already left this menu. The phone is average in terms of ring volume, but the call is still audible. The vibrating alert feels good, but I still do not recommend wearing the phone in outerwear. In terms of communication capabilities, this device is quite good: there is a wap-browser, which is very easy to set up and works fine, as well as an infrared port. Newer technologies include packet data transfer (GPRS) and Bluetooth. And it is on this device that GPRS works very stably: I managed to get about 40 megabytes of data overnight without any problems. Setting up GPRS for PC is similar to setting up for other Ericsson devices. The package does not include a software disk, which is a pity - it could be useful for novice users. For T68, the manufacturer gives the SAR value, both according to the ICNIRP version, where the calculation is for 2W / kg over about 10 grams of tissue, in which case the SAR is 0.49 W / kg (10g), and according to the IEEE version, where the calculation is for 1.6 W/kg over approximately 1 gram of tissue, and the SAR in this case is 0.74 W/kg(1g). Conclusions Technologically, phones from Ericsson have always been at their best, but lost to devices from other manufacturers in terms of communication quality. Now, everything seems to be changing, and the T68 is another confirmation of this. The appearance of the third band, namely GSM1900, dramatically expands the number of potential T68 users. Some functions are implemented somewhat differently, now the recorder has become inconvenient to use, but other pluses negate these minor shortcomings. The device is quite balanced and works without problems, which one would expect in such a complex product. Author: Eldar Murtazin See other articles Section Mobile Legends.
