ERICSSON R520M

Externally, the R520m resembles another business model from Ericsson, namely the R320s. At the same time, the standard battery does not stick out and is made flush with the back surface of the phone. But the base of the antenna protrudes more than noticeably, and if you place the device on a flat surface, then it will be in contact with it at three points, not four. The entire top of the phone rests on the antenna. As they say, it’s not one thing, it’s another.

I won’t talk about the design of the phone, I’ll just note that its dimensions are 130x50x16 mm, and its weight is about 100 grams. The IR port window is located at the top right. On the left side of the phone there is a volume key made of plastic. On the right side surface there is a voice recorder key.

The phone's keyboard is also made of plastic and covered with paint. There are navigation keys and a key to call up the quick menu. The buttons are quite large, but they are inconvenient to work with (especially the navigation ones).

The included lithium polymer battery has a capacity of 600 mAh. According to the manufacturer, the phone can work up to 200 hours in standby mode and up to 7.5 hours in talk mode. As practice has shown, the operating time with 15-20 minutes of calls per day was only 3 days without turning off at night. With fewer conversations, the phone will work for four days, but no more. It takes about two hours to fully charge the battery.

A nice feature of Ericsson phones is the function of calculating the approximate operating time of the phone; it is also present in the R520m (called, as usual, by pressing the volume key in standby mode).

The SIM card holder is ordinary and does not deserve a separate description.

Display, menu and some new features

The display of this device is graphic, displaying 4 shades of gray. The backlight is a soft emerald color and, best of all, it not only fades out smoothly, but also lights up smoothly, although this is often not noticeable. Nevertheless, the effect is amazing, at least I think so. The screen contains 4 lines of text and a line of service information. The pictograms are well drawn. There are no divisions on the battery charge level icon, which makes the indicator more informative: it has a smaller step.

The menu is organized in a traditional way for phones of this company, everything is thought out and simple. There is fast menu navigation (numeric sequences), as well as a user-defined quick access menu. You can read more about menu organization in the Ericsson T29s review. The last important note: the menu now does not slow down at all, it, one might say, “flies”.

Finally, a large notebook has been made that allows you to save up to 510 phone numbers, and for one name you can specify several numbers (Home, Work, Mobile, Fax, Other type), as well as First Name, Last Name, Company Name, Email Address. As you can see, the possibilities of the notebook are more than wide. When you select a name with multiple numbers, you will be shown a list of all the phones so you can determine the one you will call. Naturally, any contact from the address book can be sent via infrared to another cell phone or device that supports the vCard format. I completely forgot to say that the R520m continues another good tradition - it supports entering the Cyrillic alphabet wherever work with text is provided. Moreover, during the typing process you can alternate between the Cyrillic and Latin alphabet, which is extremely convenient at times. It is possible to create groups of subscribers.

When it comes to messaging, the R520m is also an extremely advanced phone: email is received from POP3 mailboxes and sent via an SMTP server. For SMS messages, there are 10 templates of 30 characters, as well as support for the EMS standard, which means that you can receive and send ringtones and pictures along with messages. The R520m supports up to 6 connected SMS messages versus the traditional 3 in other modern phones. Naturally, you will pay for each of these six messages, not just one. Unfortunately, you cannot set the type of signal for incoming messages; the choice is limited: silent mode, tone, or just a single signal.

There are lists of missed, made and received calls with date and time; Each list stores up to 10 phone numbers.

In addition to call time timers, special counters for communication sessions have appeared, during which data is transmitted. This is not surprising, since the phone supports GPRS. You can configure this function for normal, full-fledged operation in Beeline by entering the following settings:

AT+CGDCONT=1,"","internet.beeline.ru"

log/pass - beeline

number - *99#

DNS1 - 194.190.192.034

DNS2 - 194.190.192.065

GPRS works, but the speed leaves much to be desired, no more than 14400. It is quite possible that this was due to network congestion, and not to a specific device. Although the test output from the Motorola T280 phone showed a higher speed, twice as much.

Returning to data transfer, it should be noted that the R520m has a wap browser version 1.2.1 installed, which makes possible a secure connection, which is necessary when making transactions, that is, simply put, in mobile commerce. By the time this service becomes relevant in our country (in a year and a half), many other phone models will appear. Otherwise, version 1.2 is no different from 1.1, everything is configured the same way and works without problems.

The phone has a Bluetooth module installed, which allows you to connect the phone with a PC equipped with a similar module, or a wireless telephone headset. Neither one nor the other is on sale yet, the timing of the appearance of these products is also unknown. I was unable to find a single Bluetooth device in Moscow with which I could test the phone.

Speaking about new solutions, we cannot fail to note the appearance of a built-in speakerphone. During a conversation, it can be called up through the context menu (highlighted key) and also disabled. The instructions say that if the phone comes closer than 10 centimeters to any object, such as the head, the speakerphone turns off itself. In reality, this option practically does not work. The quality of the speakerphone leaves much to be desired, the maximum volume is often not enough, and in conditions of high noise levels it is useless to use this function. At maximum volume, wheezing periodically occurs in the speakers.

The asceticism of the musical design of Ericsson phones has become a legend, and when creating the R520m model, the developers did not change their preferences: only 10 tones and ringing melodies. True, now you can record up to 8 of your own melodies, but still the device does not amaze with the abundance of possibilities in this area.

But the voice control in the device has been significantly expanded: the user has the opportunity to save up to 50 voice tags, which can be used when dialing a number, changing the user profile, or turning on the voice recorder for recording. After saying the magic word, you can activate voice dialing and then say the tag word. In this mode, battery life is reduced.

For each type of phone number, a unique label is set once in the address book: for example, for a work number you will be asked to name the word “work”, for a home number - “home”, etc. When calling, for example, Mikhail, you will say “Mikhail” and then, some time after the signal, “home”. You realize how convenient this function is in the car, where you often have to make hands-free calls. The voice is recognized well, including in relatively noisy places.

The maximum duration of voice recording is 92 seconds at low quality and 36 seconds at best.

Additional features include an alarm clock, countdown timer, and stopwatch. For the alarm clock, in addition to the usual functions, there is a mode in which the user himself selects the days of the week when the alarm clock will work. A special mode allows you to set a single signal, which can be turned off by simply moving your hand over the phone. I checked it - it works as described. The stopwatch stores intermediate results in memory. The calculator is ordinary and very inconvenient.

The phone has two games: tennis and Erics. As they say, not for everyone: I didn’t really like tennis, but I like to play Erics, although I’m already pretty tired of it. The last thing I want to talk about is the ability to set one of the 5 pictures available in the device’s memory as a logo on the phone. The preview doesn't work well, but I really liked the picture of the dragon.

You can choose from three font sizes. There is a “sleep” display mode, when only a line with icons and the operator’s name is displayed on the screen, and the rest of the space is free.

Impressions and conclusions

The sensitivity of the device is the same as in other Ericsson phones. The R520m also often does not see the network where devices from other manufacturers operate; if the signal is weak, you cannot make calls from it. So, one bar of the battery charge indicator is displayed on the screen, I try to dial a number - the phone writes that it is dialing and switches to standby mode. The list of such examples could be continued, but I will not do this: there are many fans of the Ericsson brand, who are impossible to convince (and is it worth it?). The sound quality is quite decent, there is no echo, words drop out only in areas with a weak signal. In a word, a typical representative of the class of city street telephones (problems may arise in houses).

In terms of functionality, the R520m is by far the most interesting phone, but this interest is purely academic, since GPRS does not work very fast, Bluetooth would work, but there are no necessary accessories. Thus, what remains is a rather crude solution, and even in appearance the R520s clearly does not look like a business-class phone - it is, rather, a youth device.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Ultra-bright thin-film LEDs and lasers 02.04.2019

Super-bright LEDs and lasers have firmly entered our lives and are used both for conventional lighting and in various kinds of measuring electronics. Manufacturing technologies using thin-film structures could take these semiconductor devices to a new level. For example, thin-film transistors have made liquid crystal panel technology ubiquitous and accessible in a way that would not have been possible with discrete transistors alone.

In Europe, the task of developing a technology for the production of thin-film light-emitting diodes and semiconductor lasers was assigned to the well-known Belgian microelectronics scientist Paul Hermans (Paul Heremans). The pan-European Council European Research Council (ERC), which distributes funds for promising developments in Europe, has allocated a five-year grant to Paul Hermans in the amount of 2,5 million euros. This is not the first ERC grant Hermans has received. During his career at the Belgian research center Imec, he led many successful projects in the field of semiconductor development, in particular, in 2012, Hermans received a grant for a project for the production of crystalline organic semiconductors.

Thin-film LEDs and lasers are also expected to be developed using organic materials. Today, thin-film LEDs have a brightness that is 300 times weaker than that of discrete super-bright LEDs based on materials from groups III-V of the periodic table. Hermans' task will be to bring the brightness of thin-film structures closer to the capabilities of their discrete counterparts. At the same time, it will be possible to produce thin-film structures on thin and flexible substrates from a wide range of materials, including plastic, glass, and metal foil.

Progress on this front will make it possible to make a breakthrough in the mass of promising areas. These are silicon photonics, and displays for augmented reality headsets, and lidars for self-driving cars, and spectrometers for individual diagnostic systems, and much, much more.
