BENEFON Q. Mobile Phone Review Review For the past few months, our director of marketing and PR has only been doing that when meeting with me he asked the same question when I will take Benefon Q for testing. but in the end, having learned that since the beginning of January this device will be officially delivered to Russia, I took it for testing at the Benefon representative office. The device has a very attractive design, but this is exactly the case when the phone looks better in the photo than "live". It has small dimensions of 100x46x18 mm and a weight of only 89 grams. In the hands (in any case, mine) the phone is not very comfortable, it looks like a small aluminum brick. The phone is positioned by the company as a fashion phone, respectively, and the price bar is very high. At the time of writing the review in Moscow, it could be bought in only a couple of places at a price of 320 to 400 dollars, which is a lot, especially considering that the Nokia 8210 has recently fallen in price, and the Sony Z5 has become a little less expensive. True, in January, with the start of mass deliveries of this device to the market, the price will slightly decrease, but I don’t think that Benefon Q will cost less than 8210. But let's see if this phone is worth that kind of money. So, along with the phone comes a beautifully executed instruction in Russian, a battery, the phone itself and a charger. I want to make a reservation right away that work on the phone software is still ongoing, and therefore many shortcomings will be corrected by the time of official sales. I will try not to focus on them, but I will mention them anyway. The second and last caveat concerns the manual for the phone, it has the publication number YZ2503-0 and is replete with inaccuracies. Moreover, inaccuracies relate to the phone's packaging, in particular, it is indicated that three types of batteries can be used with the phone, but in fact only one, since Benefon decided not to produce the other two. In fairness, it must be said that the basic functions of the phone in the instructions are fully and completely consecrated, but, for example, such an interesting question as setting up WAP takes only two small pages. All WAP and mail settings should be attached to the phone in a separate booklet, in addition to the instructions. I was given one sheet with WAP settings for MTS, they will be given below. Battery and battery life Let's start testing the device. We insert the SIM card into the plastic holder and snap it into place. It uses a simple and time-tested holder design. We insert the battery, it is also the back wall of the phone, and it is made flush. The battery itself is lithium polymer and that is why it is so thin and weightless. I think that they simply abandoned lithium batteries for the simple reason that their dimensions, or rather, their thickness, were larger, and it was not possible to make the back surface of the phone even without increasing the phone, and the polymer battery was made flush. But, as practice has shown, in particular, the use of polymer batteries on Ericsson T28s, their pluses include a small size, and the minuses are a short operating time and inaccuracy of the charge level indicator. Indeed, the standard 650 mAh lithium polymer battery lasted only about two days with active use of the phone (up to 30 minutes of calls per day). With two or three conversations for a minute a day, she had already worked for about three days. According to the manufacturer, the maximum standby time is 100 hours, talk time is 3 hours. However, the battery level shown on the display has nothing to do with reality. I had a case when two out of four battery divisions were displayed on the screen, that is, somewhere around 40-50 percent of the charge. So, after three minutes (I did not speak on the phone), the battery discharge signal rang out and the phone turned off. That is, the user will have to recharge the phone once every two days, despite the charge level that is displayed by the phone itself. This situation can be explained only by the fact that today there is no normal algorithm for determining the remaining charge in polymer batteries. And now the funniest thing about this device is that it can only charge the battery when it is on. Even if the phone is turned off, it will turn on when the charger is connected, it is not possible to turn it off forcibly, since it does not respond to the power key. Another inconvenience associated with a polymer battery is its charging time, which is usually three to four hours for a depleted battery. This is long enough, because it is not always possible to leave the phone overnight. And to finally close the topic of power, I will say that desktop chargers are not supposed to be released for this phone, which is rather sad, in my opinion. Display, menus and settings To turn on the phone, you need to press the power button, combined with the end button. It was extremely interesting for me to observe that a short (up to a second) pressing this key brings the vibrating alert to life, but does not turn on the phone itself. To turn on, you need to hold the key pressed longer. The deep meaning of turning on the vibrating alert with a short press did not reach me, because when the phone is off, the phone should not respond to anything. Here it is constructively decided differently. So, we turn on the device, the vibration alert is triggered, then the Q icon appears on the screen, and, finally, the phone is registered on the network. Everything happens quite standardly, but I noticed the following: when you turn on the phone in a moving car (at a speed of 60-70 kilometers per hour), registration takes an order of magnitude longer, from 40 to 60 seconds. With devices from other manufacturers, I did not notice such a difference. The display, in addition to the name of the mobile operator, battery level (4 divisions), signal strength (4 divisions), current communication status (standby or talk mode), also displays the date, time, as well as inscriptions to the menu, in particular, access to the quick menu, notebook and, in fact, the menu. The display looks very interesting and unusual, I would even say it is not hackneyed. The only negative, in my opinion, is that the battery level is displayed using divisions, but the icon itself is made in the form of an empty battery and at first, looking at it, you involuntarily get scared. With the name of the operator, which is displayed on the screen, there was a funny story in general. There were no problems with the MTS card, but all Beeline cards show on the screen not just Beeline, but Beeline *, and in place of the asterisk there can be any character from the Greek alphabet. The dealership said the issue is being resolved. The display of this model is graphic, high-contrast with electroluminescent green backlight. The display can show up to 6 lines of text in total when using a dynamic (called "variable" on the phone) font size. Let's take a closer look at the keyboard. The buttons are oval, easy to press, which cannot be said about the volume keys located on the side surface, you have to apply a lot of effort to press them, and during a conversation, without taking your ear off the speaker, this is hardly possible. To top it off, they are located on the right, which is inconvenient if you are right-handed. In the vast majority of models from other manufacturers, the volume keys are located on the left. When dialing a number, if the sound of pressing the keys is turned off, the numbers appear on the screen not very quickly, but quite acceptable. But with the sound turned on, pressing a key leads to the fact that until the sound squeaks, pressing the next key will do nothing, and you will not be able to quickly dial the number. This drawback should be attributed to the unhurried iron filling of the phone. The menu in the phone is organized very interestingly. In the upper row of the display there is a row of icons corresponding to the menu items, there are 7 of them in total. The names of the main menu items are displayed in the center of the screen. Unfortunately, the developers of the phone did not provide any way to quickly navigate the menu, there are no numeric sequences for quick access to a particular menu item, which sometimes makes the work extremely difficult. I will give a simple example, in Benefon Q the list of dialed numbers can contain 10 entries and is called up by simply pressing the dial key. But the lists of missed calls and the list of accepted calls are contained in separate lists. And if you can immediately get into the list for a missed call (since the message about the missed call will be on the display with the ability to view the entire list), then in order to get into the second list, you will have to work with your hands. So, press: menu, then move with another press to the Recent calls item, press the Select key again, press the down arrow and see the Received calls item, press Select again - and here it is, the cherished list. There were 5 keystrokes in total, in the much simpler Ericsson T10s this procedure requires only one keystroke, but there the lists are combined into one. In phones with separate lists, this procedure takes twice as many clicks as compared to Ericsson T10s, namely two. In the quick navigation menu, which can be accessed from the standby mode by pressing the arrow, you can see only two items - keypad lock and user profile selection. User profiles in this phone are called surround sound. There are 4 preset profiles in total, these are Normal, Silent, Noisy, Muted. It is possible to create your own profile. In each profile, you can adjust the volume of the call, the tone of the call, the type of volume (constant or increasing), sound signals for the alarm clock, calendar, messages, adjust the volume of the sound when pressing the keys, here you can also turn the backlight on or off. In profiles, you can assign the use of vibration to any of the events, such as incoming calls, alarms, calendar, or messages. In total, you can choose a ring tone from 40 tones and melodies in the phone, you can create your own melody, which, unfortunately, I did not find in the phone. Perhaps this can be done from a PC using the BeneWin software, but this is not possible on the machine itself. The vibrating alert is felt, but, as in most recent models, it is rather weak. In contrast to the fact that the menu is Russified, neither the phone book nor SMS messages are Russified yet. They promise that in new versions of the firmware this issue will be resolved. Phonebook memory - for 100 numbers in the phone itself, and SIM card memory can also be used. From the settings, you can note the ability to turn on / off the phone by timer. The display contrast can be adjusted using a special test chart. Reception quality It's very pleasant to talk on this device, because the sound in the speaker is very clear and quite comparable with such devices as Nokia 8210 and 6210. The impression is only spoiled by interference from the display, because when the screen backlight is on, an unpleasant noise and rattling is heard in the speaker. Turning off the backlight solves this problem. In terms of sensitivity, this device is quite comparable with devices of its class and even outperforms Sony Z5 in this parameter, but this is subjective. The phone recognizes the busy signal very well, but in the absence of an auto redial function, this is useless. The phone worked almost everywhere and at the same time provided quite acceptable communication. To work in conditions of poor reception, you can buy another antenna. The standard one is easily unscrewed from the connector and in its place you can install an antenna from Benefon Twin or an antenna for the countryside called Off-road or cross-country. The latter is a thin flexible stem, which is about one and a half times larger than the phone. The cost of this antenna should be about 25, maybe 30 dollars, but so far it cannot be found on sale with us. Additional functions The phone has a calculator, it is very simple and, as is typical for most phones, inconvenient. The currency converter is completely ordinary and performs its function without any problems. There are three games, Tic-Tac-Toe (big tic-tac-toe), space shooter - Galactic Guner and finally Labyrinth (simple maze). The alarm clock can be set to work in a certain way, for example, only on weekdays, on daily alarm, on selected days during the week. You can also set a snooze for 5, 10 and 30 minutes. The calendar allows you to write a short note for a specific day and time and set an alert. Days can only be viewed as a list for the week, or you can select a specific day by typing it on the keyboard first. There is no view of events for the month, but it would be convenient to have a monthly calendar at hand. The phone has a Mobile Explorer browser that allows you to view WAP and http resources. I give below the WAP settings for MTS, for Beeline they are similar. ISP options:
WAP Options:
The phone works with WAP without problems, there are no freezes and drops. It is possible to view your mailboxes on the network, the phone supports POP3 and IMAP4 protocols. Thus, using the latest protocol, you can also send mail. Results An interesting phone with really working WAP browser and mail viewing. Unfortunately, this device has a lot of minor flaws that personally interfered with my daily use, for example, the lack of quick access to items in the menu. There are no complaints about the quality of communication, but there are also no many functions that are standard for devices from other manufacturers, for example, auto redial. Indeed, the positioning of the device as a fashion one is quite justified, since it is not suitable for the business category. In my opinion, the direct competitor of this device is Sony Z5, but the advantage of Benefon Q is that it comes officially, newer and more unusual, and it is still made of aluminum, not plastic. If you have a lot of money and you only need to talk on the phone and not use it as a calendar, diary and other things, then this device will suit you. I will not write about the shortcomings again, everything is written above. The last advice, before buying, just twist it for 15 minutes in your hands, call, try to talk to someone, and only after that make your final choice.
