ALCATEL 501. Review of mobile phone
Review
Externally, I really liked the phone, besides, it fits comfortably in the hand. With dimensions of 103x42x22 mm, the device weighs 103 grams. Of course, the weight is felt, but it is a pleasant heaviness. Looking ahead, I'll say that the phrase "nice phone" is now associated with me not only with the Panasonic GD92 and GD93, but also with this device. Alcatel 501 is available in 5 colors, I had a brown phone for testing. Plastic keys, painted in silver (to match the edging around the display), are pressed with little effort, which allows you not to turn on the keypad lock when using the phone outside the home, especially if you carry the device in your pockets. A welcome innovation was the appearance of a navigation key that can be moved in 4 directions, as well as pressed. It is with the help of this key that you move through the phone menu and select certain items. Other keys are needed only to dial a number, text, or quickly return to the top menu level (C key). Pressing the end call key does not lead to the transition to the top menu in this device, as it is implemented in phones from other manufacturers, but this is a matter of habit. By the way, I managed to quickly relearn and understand that such a system is sometimes even more convenient to use. Concluding the description of the keyboard, it should be noted that there is another key above the display in the right corner: it is painted to match the body color and is not striking, it can even be mistaken for another speaker hole, but this is a real key, called personal in the instructions. You can assign some actions to this key, for example, a long press turns on the vibrating alert by default, a second press turns it off, a short press calls up the phone book. However, it is always possible to independently customize these two types of clicks and the actions associated with them. There is another key on the case on the left: it is used to activate voice dialing (up to 10 numbers), and when pressed for a long time, it turns on the voice recorder (up to 4 records of 15 seconds each). In the 500th model, the recorder is designed for only 15 seconds of recording. I want to note right away that the voice dialing function works quite well, but due to external noise, the tag may not be perceived, so using this function at a disco, in a bar or on a Friday evening in a crowded place is a thankless task, it's easier to dial the number manually. The battery in the 501st model is just a 680 mAh nickel-metal hydride. Starting testing, I did not expect to get good results, despite the fact that, according to the manufacturer, the phone is able to work in talk mode up to 5 hours, and in standby mode - up to 320. Such a period of work seemed to me exaggerated, possible only in ideal operating conditions. But practice has shown that the phone is really capable of working for four days without blackouts at night with 15-20 minutes of calls per day. The result is impressive, especially since I actively used the alarm clock, games and other energy-intensive functions. The battery is mounted in the case with the help of protrusions and a latch on top, while it sits very firmly in the grooves, there is not even the slightest backlash. The battery charging time, on the contrary, is extremely short - about an hour and a half, a maximum of an hour and a half. In this area, the phone deserves the most flattering reviews. By the way, the charger that comes with the phone is a desktop charging glass. The attachment of the SIM card is the most common and does not deserve a separate description, everything can be seen in the photo. Display, menu The phone is turned on after pressing the end call key - next to it, the power icon is shown on the case. An animated splash screen flashes on the screen, and the phone turns on. Next, you are asked to check the accuracy of the clock and the correctness of the date (and so every time you disconnect the battery and then turn on the phone). You can customize the welcome message. The display in this device is graphic; The resolution of 96x64 pixels allows displaying up to 8 text lines of 20 characters each. Pleasant amber color screen backlight is very convenient. All characters on the screen are easy to read, even in direct sunlight. The design of the display is quite unusual: the name of the mobile operator is written in the lower left corner, and the clock and date are at the top. At the top of the display there is a line of icons, among them the battery level (only 3 divisions), a five-step signal strength indicator, made in the form of a ladder (very unusual and, nevertheless, convenient execution). There are other icons, for example, for the alarm clock, forwarding and events. Events are understood as voice mail, short messages, reminders, for each of them there is a separate menu in which you can view the total number in each category and select the one you need. The main menu is organized very simply: on the left is a row of vertical icons, on the right is a large image of this icon with animation and a caption to it. There is no quick menu navigation. In another phone, I would undoubtedly regard the absence of such a possibility as a big drawback (for example, in Benefon Q), but here you don’t notice it, everything is so logical and simply organized. You can change the view mode of the main menu, then instead of a row of icons with a large image and a caption, you will see just icons without captions (recommended for those who are already familiar with the phone menu). The user interface of the menu, thoughtful and very user-friendly, deserves special praise. The choice of any item is carried out by pressing the navigation key; repeated pressing shows the menu sub-items, which can be entered using the same key. You can go to the upper level by pressing the C key or simply by selecting the Return command from the list, of course, using the navigation key. Thus, you have the opportunity to control the phone with one hand. In the photo you see the voice recorder menu. At the top there are two icons depicting the entries made, by rejecting the OK key to the right, you will be taken to the next entry. By clicking it, you will see such a submenu. By the way, scrolling through the horizontal icons is typical of the Alcatel 501 menu. Another example is the Messages menu. Here you can write messages, read your inbox, view your outbox and finally configure everything related to SMS. And all this with the help of a few icons at the top of the screen - an extremely convenient innovation. If we talk about SMS messages, it should be noted that working with them is very simple. There are 5 templates, and in Russian by default, which is rather strange, since the phone does not support dialing in Russian, although it accepts Russian SMS. For example, for MTS, reception is activated by sending a message to number 0 with the set SMS center number +70957699800. It is possible to send one SMS message to several recipients at once, you can also create several groups of subscribers for sending SMS, which is quite convenient for mass mailings. The disadvantage (or feature) I noticed is that when forming a group of subscribers for sending messages, you can choose the same subscriber name twice, or even three times. Thus, this subscriber will receive the same message several times. Phone book As you already understood, there is no input of names in Russian (I hope not yet). By default, the phone book is divided into a book from the SIM card, work, personal and general, located in the phone's memory. Moreover, the general book contains all the entries from the work and personal books. You can create your own phone books (up to 15) with whatever name you like. Entries are dynamically distributed between the phonebook and the organizer: sacrificing some of the entries in the organizer, you will get a large phonebook. In total, up to 300 numbers are stored in the device's memory. For each name, you can record up to 23 items of information: it can be 7 phone numbers, 2 email addresses, and more. Other Functions As you already know, the phone has a clock, and in two versions. "Clock #2" can be set to any time zone. Then the screen will display the time of both time zones. The view mode can be changed so that only one clock is visible. It is possible to set the exact time via the operator's network, but in our country this function is not yet available. The alarm clock in this phone is simple, it is only one, you can set it up for a single or daily operation. After setting the alarm, the corresponding icon appears on the screen. By the way, the alarm clock works even when the phone is turned off. The lack in the number of alarm clocks is partially compensated by the organizer. An event can be assigned to any day and hour, by default it is a Meeting, Birthday or Call. To hear the warning signal, you need to activate it from the organizer menu. It must also be enabled in the Sounds menu. By default, it is only enabled in the second menu. The organizer provides division into days, weeks and months. For each day, you can view all entries, edit them, and, of course, delete them. Everything is very simple and clear. Also for the 501st model, there is a fundamental possibility to synchronize organizer data with a PC via a cable. In the absence of such, I did not synchronize the phone with the computer, however, the purchase of a cable worth 40-50 dollars just because of this function seems unjustified to me. Unfortunately, the phone does not have an IR port, which would be very useful in this model. The phone has a calculator and a currency converter. Both are quite easy to learn and do not deserve a separate description. Three games provided by the developers are designed to diversify the user's vacation. One of them is Music: a melody of several notes is played and you need to play it on the phone keypad. Apparently, I am very unmusical, but I did not like the game. The second game is tags: everything is extremely simple and, as a result, not very interesting. The last game in the original sounds like Secret, and in Russian - Bulls and cows. The game is interesting, I remember we played it for a long time at school. The disadvantage of its implementation in the phone is that the list of trial and error cannot be viewed in its entirety and at once, you have to run back and forth, which is very annoying and does not allow you to concentrate. Sound quality, sensitivity, usability and WAP We turn to very subjective assessments. I liked the sensitivity of this device, it is very good and more than sufficient for the city. I almost never had problems with the availability of communication, where other phones worked, this one also worked. Of course, the device did not show any miracles in the reception area either, everything is simple and reliable. The sound quality is quite acceptable, the voice is clearly audible and not at the maximum volume of the speaker, which can be explained by the power of the latter, because it is also used for speakerphone. Sometimes an echo appears: it is almost imperceptible and is heard only in conditions of complete silence in the room, it was not there on the street. In fairness, I note that the echo does not spoil the impression of the phone. During a conversation, you can activate the speakerphone; it works very well, subjectively quite a bit louder than Panasonic phones. The disadvantage is that at maximum volume, the speaker sometimes rattles. Also during a call, you can put the call on hold in a few touches, view the phone book, SMS messages or organizer. The phone is equipped with auto redial. When this function is activated, 10 attempts to reach the number will be made, then if all attempts were unsuccessful, the phone will be added to the list of unsuccessfully dialed numbers, for some reason called the Black List. As usual, the phone has a list of the last 10 made, 10 received and 10 missed calls with the time, date and duration of the call. The problem is that the phone rounds the duration of calls to the minute, and down. So, any call up to 1 minute, for example at 15 or 37 seconds, in the list will have a duration of 0 minutes, and any call from 1 to 2 minutes will be listed as a minute. Extremely inconvenient rounding. The vibrating alert feels good, it can work in several modes. The phone has 30 tones and melodies of a call, there is a possibility to record your own melody. The volume of the call is more than sufficient, while it is soft and does not irritate the ear. The phone can be heard even in noisy places. The WAP browser works as it should, but its configuration is difficult. As a result, I managed to set up the browser, but it did not have Cyrillic support, which is very sad. Overall Impression As mentioned at the beginning, the phone is very pleasant. Small flaws in the software do not practically affect the quality of the device. Alcatel 501 is very comfortable, ergonomic, thoughtful menu makes its use a real pleasure. The disadvantages include the fact that this business device does not have an IR port. The menu items described in the instructions do not always coincide with those presented in the phone. The instructions do not contain a complete description in Russian of the WAP-browser settings, which causes difficulties. Also, the absence of the Russian language in the browser is a disadvantage. In my opinion, Alcatel 501 due to its unusual design, speakerphone and other parameters can compete with such phones as Panasonic GD92, GD93. In terms of functionality, it is somewhat inferior to these models, but it is able to compete with them in terms of the attractiveness of the interface. This device will appeal to everyone who is tired of a certain ascetic menu in models from other manufacturers. The undoubted advantages are also a long battery life and a short charge time.
