A tasty and healthy product is sauerkraut. Practical housewives prepare it in the fall both in the countryside and in the city. And the most time-consuming operation here is to chop the heads of cabbage. For this, sharp long knives and special shredders are used. But no manual one can be compared in convenience and performance with an electric one, which you can do yourself by taking some parts and assemblies from an old washing machine.

The general device of an electric shredder is simple: an electric motor and a bearing assembly of a working disk with three knives are mounted on a metal frame welded from steel corners 20x20 mm. Rotation is transmitted to it from the engine by a belt drive. The body of the shredder enclosing the working disc has an inlet with a feed funnel and an outlet window. For the convenience of work, the frame is mounted on support legs welded from steel corners so that the working disk is 30° deviated from the horizontal. This makes it easier to load the funnel and feed the cabbage under the knife.

The most important part of the shredder is a working disk with three knives. It is cut from a duralumin sheet 2 mm thick. To increase rigidity, its edge is beaded on the floor at a right angle of 10 mm. Having outlined the installation site for the knives, three crescent-shaped windows are cut in the disk, and then the edges of the cut are squeezed out 6 mm above the plane of the disk, as shown in Figure 2. Sickle-shaped knives are installed on the resulting sites with rivets. The best material for them is a blade from a mechanical hacksaw or a scythe blade. It is somewhat easier to make a straight knife, but a saber knife is better at work. Three duralumin corners riveted on the opposite side of the disk from the knives will help to remove the cabbage "noodles" from under the disk.

The body of the shredder consists of two parts: a casing of the working disc and a cover with a feed funnel. Both parts can be made either from a steel sheet with a thickness of 0,75 mm, connecting the joints by gas welding, or from the material of the washing machine body with aluminum rivets, or from an aluminum sheet with a rolling connection.

The bearing assembly of the working disk is formed by: a housing, a shaft and two bearings No. 80202. An angle of 20x20 mm and a vertical steel plate 3 mm thick are welded to the housing horizontally. Two holes in the lower shelf of the corner - for attaching the assembly to the frame, and two - in the vertical shelf and one in the top plate - for connecting the protective cover of the working disk.

The details of the V-belt reduction gear from the engine to the working disk are borrowed from the washing machine. The belt tension is regulated by the position of the engine: the grooves of its mounting bolts on the frame allow you to change the center distance within a small range.

The adjustment of the working body is reduced to setting a gap of 3-5 mm between the base plate of the feed funnel and the knives, and the thickness of the cut is determined by the design of the working disk: the height of the knife blades relative to the disk.

An electric shredder with sharpened knives copes with a head of cabbage in a matter of seconds, therefore, in order to avoid injuries, chopped vegetables should be fed to a rotating disk with a wooden pestle.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Sleepy cows give sleeping milk 15.12.2015

Milk milked at night helps against insomnia and obsessive anxiety. Korean researchers compared the behavior of rats fed day milk with those fed night milk. It has been found that night milk has a great calming, sedative effect, that after it the animals sleep longer and are less prone to physical activity.

On the other hand, being awake, they explore new territories more actively, which indicates reduced anxiety - roughly speaking, after nightly milk, the rats began to be less afraid. The effect was the same as after diazepam, a well-known sedative and hypnotic drug. (At the same time, milk was given after processing: it was first turned into a powder form, and then the milk powder was diluted with water.)

Day milk can also work as a relaxing agent, but to a lesser extent than night milk. For example, when rats fed day or night milk, or a solution of diazepam, or just water, were placed on a rotating drum and the activity and coordination of movements of rodents were observed, then after night milk rats fell off the drum twice as often as after day milk. (In turn, after diazepam, animals fell off the device twice as often as after night milk.)

A comparative biochemical analysis showed that night milk contains 24% more amino acid tryptophan, which stimulates sleep, and 10 times more of the hormone melatonin, which regulates circadian rhythms, compared to day milk. Obviously, the sleepy state of cows also affects the composition of the milk that they produce at night. On the other hand, according to electroencephalography, there was nothing unusual in the rhythms of the brain after night milk, while characteristic anomalies arose from diazepam, reflecting the sedative effect of the drug.
