What did the Siamese kings give to the objectionable nobility?

An approximate analogue of the expression "suitcase without a handle" in English is the idiom "white elephant" ("white elephant"). It comes from a tradition when the Siamese king gave this animal to a noble person who was not to his liking. By virtue of their sacred status, white elephants were not supposed to work, but the burden of maintenance sooner or later ruined the owner.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is caffeine?

Now you can buy decaffeinated coffee, and millions of people prefer it to regular coffee. What is caffeine, and why do some people want to get rid of it? Roasted coffee beans contain so many different substances that science still cannot identify them all. But the most well-known substance is caffeine. It is complex in its chemical composition.

In its pure form, caffeine is not found - only in compounds with acids. One coffee bean contains approximately 1% caffeine. Caffeine is stimulating, which is why some people avoid drinking it at night. Other people, on the contrary, believe that coffee does not interfere with their sleep. As already mentioned, at different times of the day, caffeine affects a person in different ways. It has been proven that its effect on different people is not the same.

It is important to note here again that caffeine does not exist in its pure form. It is part of other substances and in combination with food becomes completely different. So, if you add milk or cream to coffee, then caffeine combines with the protein found in milk and cream, and its effect weakens.

You can isolate caffeine from coffee by evaporating or soaking green beans before roasting them.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Wiring increases 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi coverage 08.03.2014

TP-Link announced the start of deliveries of TL-WPA4220KIT kits. With their help, you can increase the coverage of the 802.11b / g / n Wi-Fi network through the use of electrical wiring. The kit includes two Powerline adapters: TL-PA4010 and TL-WPA4220. The first is used to connect an existing router to the power grid to communicate with the second at speeds up to 500 Mbps. The second acts as a router with support for Wi-Fi (speed up to 300 Mbps) and two Ethernet ports.

The communication range between the adapters is up to 300 m, which makes it possible to connect different floors of a residential building or office to the network.

Connection is simplified by the presence of Pair and Wi-Fi Clone buttons. Clicking on the first one automatically establishes a connection between adapters protected by AES encryption with a 128-bit key, and clicking on the second one clones the Wi-Fi router settings. If you move the kit components to another location, you do not need to reconfigure them.

The adapters comply with the HomePlug AV, IEEE802.3, IEEE802.3u, and IEEE802.11b/g/n specifications.
The set costs $60.
