The metro in Baku was launched in 1967, and one of the stations was called "April 28" - in honor of the day when Soviet power was established in Azerbaijan. After the republic's secession from the USSR, the station was "upgraded" for exactly a month. Now it is called "May 28" - in honor of the Republic Day public holiday.

Why do soldiers salute?

What is a "salute"? It means to show respect to a person of higher rank. It has been established that this was done in different ways at different times. Greetings in one form or another have always existed among all peoples. The forms of greeting were different: bows, kneeling, falling prone to the ground, various hand gestures. The military greeting, which is customary in the army - putting the right hand to the visor of the cap - appeared quite recently.

At the end of the XNUMXth century, junior officers greeted their elders, and soldiers saluted officers by removing their headgear. Civilians still bow to each other in this way as a sign of respect. This tradition probably dates back to the time when the knight had to raise the visor or remove the helmet in front of the lord. Raising your hand in greeting instead of taking off your hat had practical implications. As the soldiers set fire to the fuses of the muskets, their hands were soiled with soot. And to take off a hat with dirty hands meant to make it unusable. Therefore, by the end of the XNUMXth century, honor began to be given with a simple raise of the hand.

Officers or soldiers who carried a sword or saber, whether on horseback or on foot, saluted by raising their weapons, bringing the handle closer to their lips, then moving the weapon to the right and down. This form of greeting originates in the Middle Ages and is associated with religion, when a knight kissed the hilt of a sword, which symbolized the Christian cross. Then it became a tradition when taking an oath.

Smart tweezers for microbiome research 11.01.2024

Scientists at Mount Sinai School of Medicine are introducing an innovative tool, mEnrich-seq, that can be compared to “smart tweezers” for studying microbiomes. This technique, which focuses on bacterial DNA methylation, promises to revolutionize medical research by providing precise information about specific strains of bacteria in complex microbiomes. The potential applications of this tool in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases could be an in-depth exploration into the world of microscopic organisms.

Sequencing bacterial genomes has revolutionized the understanding of microbial organisms. However, analyzing entire microbiomes containing many different bacteria is a complex task comparable to distinguishing between musical instruments in an orchestra. mEnrich-seq addresses this issue by focusing on a signature feature—bacterial DNA methylation.

Each species of bacteria has unique chemical markers in its DNA, similar to human fingerprints. mEnrich-seq is designed to recognize these “secret codes” and highlight samples containing target bacteria, suppressing background noise in the microbiome.

In practice, mEnrich-seq has demonstrated impressive performance. Specifically, the tool successfully isolated and sequenced E. coli genomes from urine samples of patients with urinary tract infections, outperforming traditional methods with more than 99,97% genome capture and high sensitivity.

In addition to E. coli, mEnrich-seq was used to analyze Akkermansia muciniphila, a bacterium associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Now, thanks to this tool, the study of this rare bacterium is becoming more accessible, opening new perspectives in understanding its role in complex diseases.
