Why is the speed of ships measured in knots?

For a long time, to determine the speed of ships, a sector log was used - a triangular board with a rope tied to it, on which knots were tied at the same distance. The board was thrown overboard, the time was recorded (usually half a minute) and they counted how many knots the rope carried by the lag would unwind while the ship was moving forward. If the distance between the knots is a multiple of a nautical mile (for example, 1/120 of a mile), then you can immediately determine the speed in miles per hour. This unit of measurement is called the "knot". Modern instruments for measuring the speed of ships are more advanced and work on other principles, but they still indicate it in knots.

Often such taverns became clubs. This happened in the XNUMXth century. In the middle of the XNUMXth century, citizens of different incomes developed the habit of dining not at home, but in taverns. Most taverns offered meals for a shilling or less. These dinners included wine and even ale.

Taverns have become meeting places for famous people. Shakespeare became a regular at the Mermaid Tavern in London. By 1765, coffeehouses were also springing up in London. There you could find coffee, tea, chocolate, which were a novelty, a curiosity at that time. Sometimes there you could eat something more substantial.

In 1765, a man named Boulanger opened an establishment in Paris that sold snacks and cooked meals. He called this place a restaurant. That was the first time the word was used. The establishment was a success, and many similar ones opened soon after. Within a short period of time, restaurants have spread widely throughout France. The word "restaurant" was used in England until the end of the 1683th century. In the United States, the first restaurant opened in Philadelphia in XNUMX. It was called "Blue Anchor".
