Why did fainting goats get such a name?

There is a breed of domestic goat called the fainting or myotonic goat. Due to a genetic abnormality, when frightened or very surprised, their leg muscles are paralyzed, due to which the animal falls on its side and lies for about 10 seconds. At the same time, the goats remain fully conscious, so this state cannot be called a faint.

Who is John Calvin?

John Calvin was the leader of the Reformation, a religious movement that swept through Europe in the 10th century and divided Christendom into Catholics and Protestants. Calvin was born in France on July 1509, 1536. After studying Latin, philosophy and logic, he came to the new Protestant faith. He had to leave France because of his religious beliefs, and in XNUMX he went to Switzerland, to Geneva, where, with the exception of one short period, he lived all his life. Under his strong leadership, Geneva became the center of Protestantism. The church issued city laws and regulated all aspects of daily life.

The laws were harsh. The inhabitants of Geneva had to be frugal, industrious and serious. Dances and songs - with the exception of hymns - were banned. Those who disobeyed were severely punished. Calvinism was an unforgiving religion. Man, according to Calvin, was sinful and could only be saved through God's grace. But only a few people chosen by God (Calvin called them the elect) will receive this grace. And God had long ago decided who would be among the elect. This was Calvin's doctrine of predestination.

Calvin died on May 27, 1564. But by then his ideas had spread from Geneva to much of Western Europe. The English Puritans who went to America in the XNUMXth century were Calvinists. Presbyterians and other Reformed churches today base their religious beliefs on the teachings of John Calvin.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

memory enhancing molecule 15.02.2021

Scientists from the University of Cadiz and the University of Seville in Spain have discovered a molecule that promotes neuronal repair, improves memory and cognition.

The researchers obtained the substance (diterpene) from a plant of the Euphorbia genus (Euphorbia). The compound is said to activate protein kinase C, also referred to as PKC, and promote the formation of new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain that is involved in the mechanism of emotion formation and memory consolidation. This was confirmed by experiments on mice.

In the future, the substance can be used in the treatment of patients with brain injuries, the researchers note.
