Why do we sometimes think that the wheels of a moving car are spinning in the opposite direction?

When watching a moving car in some videos, it seems to us that its wheels are spinning backwards. This is a manifestation of the stroboscopic effect due to the inertia of vision. You can choose such a driving speed that in the time of 1/24 of a second (the standard duration of one frame of a film) the wheel makes several turns, but just barely reaches its previous position. Since the human eye is guided by the spokes of the wheel, we get the feeling that it is slowly rotating in the opposite direction. This phenomenon can also be observed in real life - for example, at night on the street, which is illuminated by lanterns with low-frequency pulsation.

What building in New York cost the Americans, because of corruption, one and a half times more than the purchase of Alaska?

The construction of the three-story New York County Courthouse at 52 Chambers Street cost one and a half times more than buying Alaska from Russia due to the total corruption of the authorities that arose thanks to the leader of the organization of the Democratic Party of the State of New York, William Tweed. In the end, he became so compromising the Democrats that his party members became the main whistleblowers of Tweed. After the court verdict, Tweed died in Ludlow Prison, on the construction of which he also illegally enriched himself.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Promising material for lithium-ion batteries 21.06.2013

Scientists at the Technical University of Munich have developed a material that paves the way for high-capacity, long-life batteries. Most importantly, this material is based on boron and silicon, which are cheap and available.

The material from which the electrodes of lithium-ion batteries are made is critical to the capacity of the battery. Until now, the negative electrode is usually made of graphite, the layers of which are capable of storing lithium atoms. However, the capacity of graphite is limited to accepting 1 lithium atom per 6 carbon atoms. In comparison, silicon can take up to 10 times more lithium, but unfortunately, during this process, silicon expands greatly, which drastically reduces such important characteristics of lithium-ion batteries as durability, the ability to quickly charge and deliver powerful current.

Looking for an alternative to pure silicon, German scientists synthesized special three-dimensional structures consisting of boron and silicon (LiBSi2). Like carbon atoms, boron and silicon atoms are connected in a special structure in the form of a tetrahedron, but unlike diamond, they form channels that can store lithium atoms.

An electrode based on this structure must be unique both in terms of capacity and strength. The last parameter is especially important, since lithium-ion batteries are quite fragile and sensitive to temperature changes and overheating. LiBSi2 electrodes are resistant to air, water and heat up to 800 degrees Celsius. So far, scientists have not yet determined exactly how many lithium atoms the new structure can store, and whether it will expand during charging. Nevertheless, the developers are confident that their new material will surpass silicon and, especially, graphite and will become an excellent raw material for the manufacture of new generation battery electrodes.

It should be noted that the Germans made their new type of electrode in the laboratory of Arizona State University, where it was possible to create a pressure of 100 atmospheres and a temperature of about 900 degrees Celsius. Thanks to this, it was possible to produce a "diamond" capable of holding lithium.
