Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

How do plants and animals manage to live in the desert?

There are many different types of deserts. In some, there is a scorching heat all year round, from which even sand and stones groan. In others, such as the great Gobi desert, hot summers are replaced by very cold winters.

However, any desert is a region in which only special species of living organisms can exist, adapted to life in this particular desert. For example, the well-known Mexican desert cacti have thick, fleshy stems and spines instead of true leaves. In general, shrub plants living in deserts have very small leaves, or none at all. The small leaf surface prevents too much moisture from evaporating from the plant.

Many desert plants have thorns and needles, while others have an unpleasant taste and smell. Thus, they protect themselves from animals and do not allow themselves to be eaten. During the dry or cold season, plants tend to be "dormant" or produce seeds that can survive such a period. When it's time for growth, the seeds germinate, new plants grow out of them, which quickly fade and produce a new crop of seeds. After a few weeks or months, the plant is again dormant.

An obligatory ability of all animals living in deserts, without exception, should be the ability to do without water for a long time or to get to sources located at a great distance from each other.

A perfect example of an animal adapted to life in the desert is the camel. He has special pads on his feet to make it easier to walk on hot sand, a stomach in which water accumulates, a fatty hump - an energy store needed during long transitions in an area devoid of vegetation, and tightly closed nostrils to prevent sand from entering the lungs. during sandstorms. Many of the little desert dwellers do not drink water at all. They get moisture from plant sap and night dew on leaves and stones.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

ASUS PCE-AX3000 Expansion Card 22.11.2019

ASUS has announced the PCE-AX3000 expansion card, which allows you to endow your desktop computer with high-speed wireless connectivity.

The product is made in PCI-Express x1 format. Implemented support for Wi-Fi 6, or 802.11ax. It is possible to work in the frequency bands of 2,4 GHz and 5 GHz: in the first case, the data transfer rate reaches 600 Mbps, in the second - 2400 Mbps.

We are talking about the implementation of MU-MIMO and OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access) technologies. The latter will allow different devices to work on the same channel by assigning subcarrier frequencies to individual client gadgets.

In addition, the expansion card provides support for Bluetooth 5.0 wireless communication. WPA3 is responsible for security.

Guaranteed compatibility with computers running Windows 10 and Linux operating systems. The novelty weighs approximately 80 grams.
