Why are Americans called Pindos?

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a large number of Greek refugees arrived in the Odessa region, among which the poorest were those from the Pindus mountain system. Since that time, the contemptuous name "Pindos" has been attached to the Greeks of the Black Sea region. And in relation to the Americans, the word "pindos" or "pendos" began to be used only from the beginning of the 21st century. According to one theory, the reason for this was the joint presence of Russian and NATO peacekeepers in Kosovo. The Americans called "Pindos" black-haired and undersized Balkans, including Greeks, and our soldiers, hearing this, turned the term against the Americans themselves, who seemed to them too cowardly.

Why do we need a skeleton?

The skeleton has two main jobs - it supports our body in an upright position and protects the internal organs. The skeleton is a frame made up mostly of bones. At birth, a baby's skeleton contains about 270 bones, some of which are quite small. An adult usually has 206 bones because some of them fuse together. In joints, the bones are held together by ligaments that resemble cords or twine. Some connections are very mobile.

On the outside, the bone has a thin, hard coating that contains many tiny blood vessels that carry nutrients to the bone cells. Inside the bone is porous and filled with bone marrow. Part of the bone marrow contains stores of fat, while the other part produces red blood cells.

The structure of pentaquarks has been studied 16.06.2019

Exotic subatomic particles called pentaquarks contain five smaller particles - quarks and antiquarks. But these particles are not just an accumulation of five components. Pentaquarks are molecular-like agglomerations of a pair of smaller particles, one of which consists of three quarks, and the other of a quark and an antiquark.

First discovered in 2015 at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, pentaquarks were unlike anything before. All previous known particles containing quarks were either baryons—particles such as protons and neutrons that contain three quarks—or mesons, which are composed of one quark and one antiquark. But pentaquarks, with their five component particles, did not fit into any of these categories.

"There was no clear picture of how pentaquarks are built," says particle physicist Tomasz Skwarnicki of Syracuse University in New York, co-author of the study.

Some scientists believed that the five components can be combined on an equal footing. But detailed measurements show that pentaquarks are made of two known particles, the baryon and the meson, glued together. This discovery makes the particles a little less exotic than intended.

Nevertheless, the result reveals new facets of elementary particle physics: before that, it was not clear that baryons and mesons could combine with each other at all.
