One of the most famous photographs of Churchill, depicting him sullen and angry, was taken in 1941 after his speech to the Canadian House of Commons. When Churchill was brought into the room, he told the photographer that he had two minutes and lit a cigar. At the request of the photographer to remove the cigar, the prime minister refused. Local area network for a quantum computer 05.03.2020

The bulky cryogenic systems of modern quantum computers, by definition, cannot accommodate hundreds or more qubits. The system will turn out to be too large - the size of a room or even a house. The solution may be the creation of clusters. It remains to solve the problem of network connection of systems in a cluster with the preservation of quantum entanglement. To do this, physicists from Zurich were able to create an experimental quantum local area network.

A group of physicists from the ETH Zurich (ETH Zurich) has demonstrated a microwave quantum line five meters long. It is the longest line of its kind to date. It can be used both for future quantum computer networks and for experiments in the field of fundamental research in quantum physics.

The microwave line is a metal waveguide between two quantum processors. Like quantum processors, the waveguide is cooled by liquid helium to a temperature of -273,15 °C. The waveguide is separated from the external environment by a multilayer copper casing, the weight of which is a quarter of a ton. This allows you to keep the temperature at the required low level. Such low temperatures are needed in order to eliminate thermal perturbations that violate the state of superposition of quanta and lead to errors in calculations.

A communication line between quantum processors is necessary to exchange superposition states between them or to create entanglement so that a quantum cluster works as a single quantum computer. Entanglement is carried out with the help of photons of microwave radiation. The generator in one system emits a photon, which overcomes the distance through the waveguide and is received by the second system. Experiments with a 5-meter microwave line showed that in the process of photon transmission, qubits in coupled systems were subjected to minimal decoherence (mismatch).

In parallel, physicists have created a 10-meter and plan to create a 30-meter line of quantum communication. A line 10 meters long has already been created and tested by cooling, but no experiments have been made on it yet. A 30 meters long line will be created later. If the same design of the heat-insulating casing is implemented, then one and a half tons of copper will be needed for it. Obviously, there is still work to be done on the thermal insulation scheme.
