Why did one American mail 80 bricks in small parcels?

The American Postal Service has been offering domestic parcels since 1913. Three years later, a businessman from Vernel, Utah, calculated that this was the cheapest way to deliver building materials over long distances. He sent 676 bricks in small parcels to his city, 80 km away, wrapping each one separately to build a bank. Having completed the order, the postal department immediately set a daily limit of parcels per person at 000 kg.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Which birds wall themselves up in a hollow?

In hornbills, females wall themselves in a hollow for the period of incubation and maturation of chicks. Putty is made from moist clay soil, droppings and the remains of juicy fruits that make up the food of these birds. The male brings the necessary components to the hollow, and the female makes putty and with side blows of the beak, like a real plasterer, closes up the entrance to the hollow. There remains a small hole through which only the tip of the beak passes.

All worries about the delivery of food and the timely removal of waste products are taken over by the male. Voluntary confinement lasts up to 3-4 months, and during this time the female manages not only to sit and feed the chicks, but also shed.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

sky seismograph 22.07.2002

The Japan Geographic Institute has installed more than a thousand sensors for the movement of the earth's crust around the country.

Such a sensor is a 4,5 meter high stainless steel column with a satellite positioning system receiver on top. Every half minute, the receiver determines the coordinates of the location of the sensor with an accuracy of about two millimeters, which makes it possible to notice tectonic shifts. The average distance between the sensors is 25 kilometers, but in seismically hazardous areas they are more densely spaced.

Last year, this system detected unexpected shifts in the Nagoya city area. Typically, the earth's crust here moves westward at a rate of about 2,5 centimeters per year. But recently it has reversed direction. Looks like a big earthquake is on the way.
