Why did the Chinese women of Jiangyong county use a script hidden from men for a long time?

Since ancient times, Chinese women living in Jiangyong County, Hunan Province, had a special writing system called Nu-shu, carefully hidden from men. Since women were forbidden to study official letters, they invented their own set of characters corresponding to individual syllables, and this knowledge was transmitted to girls only from their mothers or sisters. To prevent men from discovering the cryptography, nu-shu signs were most often woven into the ornament - their very shape was optimal for embroidery on fabric.

Can animals make long-range weather forecasts?

It has been observed that ground squirrels are able to "predict" a particularly harsh winter. In some years gopher burrows are especially deep. Those animals that hibernate in winter react to the approach of winter in a similar way.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Found evidence of the existence of exotic quark matter 03.06.2020

A research team from the University of Helsinki has found compelling evidence for the presence of exotic quark matter in the cores of the largest neutron stars in existence. The conclusion was reached by combining the latest results from theoretical particle and nuclear physics with measurements of gravitational waves from neutron star collisions.

All normal matter around us consists of atoms, dense nuclei of which, consisting of protons and neutrons, are surrounded by negatively charged electrons. However, it is known that inside the so-called neutron stars, atomic matter collapses into extremely dense nuclear matter, in which neutrons and protons are packed so tightly that the entire star can be considered one huge nucleus.

Until now, it was not clear whether there is nuclear matter inside the cores of the most massive neutron stars and whether it passes into a more exotic state called quark matter, in which the nuclei themselves no longer exist.

Even when running large-scale simulations on supercomputers unable to determine the fate of nuclear matter inside neutron stars, a Finnish research team has come up with a new approach to the problem. They realized that by combining the latest results of theoretical particle and nuclear physics with astrophysical measurements, it would be possible to determine the characteristics and identity of the matter found inside neutron stars.

According to the study, the matter found in the cores of the most massive stable neutron stars bears a much greater resemblance to quark matter than to ordinary nuclear matter. Calculations show that in these stars the diameter of the core, identified as quark matter, can exceed half the diameter of the entire neutron star. However, the researchers say there are still many uncertainties surrounding the exact structure of neutron stars.

A key factor behind the new discoveries was the emergence of two recent results in observational astrophysics: the measurement of gravitational waves from neutron star mergers and the discovery of very massive neutron stars with masses close to twice that of the Sun.
